Risk factors in the collaborative development of management information systems for Nigerian universities

The authors discuss the risk factors associated with the collaborative development of information systems (IS) within the university environment in Nigeria. They use observations and reviews of relevant reports of the project as well as a variation of the Delphi Study in presenting their findings. The study shows that risks were associated with funding, top administrators' commitment, the number of participating universities, the role of the donor, as well as other factors. In addition, the challenges posed by each risk factor and the lessons learned are presented. Primarily, the study reports the scenario of IS development by universities in a developing economy in which the development pr…

Acceptance and Continuance Intention of Web-based Learning Technologies (WLT) Use among University Students in a Baltic Country

This paper presents the acceptance and "continuance intention" of use for Web-based learning tools among University students in an Eastern European Country, namely Estonia. In this paper, we used the technology acceptance model (TAM), which was extended to include two external constructs: the technology and user characteristics. These two constructs were modeled to influence the perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness constructs in the TAM. Further, another construct - continuance intention - in the information systems (IS) post-adoption literature was linked to the TAM. We used a sample of 72 students from four local higher educational institutions that have experience with a speci…

Uncertainties and Risks in the Implementation of an E-Learning Information Systems Project in a Higher-Learning Environment: Viewpoints from Estonia

This paper investigates the sorts of risks and uncertainties inherent in implementing an e-learning information systems project in Estonia. The study uses a variation of the Delphi study in eliciting the risk factors or items from experienced top management professionals within the organisation. The main objective of the study is to identify the uncertainties or risks in the implementation of the systems, using the viewpoint of Estonia, which is an emerging economy. The findings of the work indicate that wrong development strategy, staff volatility, change in top management and lack of funding are amongst the top risk factors in implementing e-learning in Estonia. On the other hand, risks …

ERP systems success: an empirical analysis of how two organizational stakeholder groups prioritize and evaluate relevant measures

Organizations worldwide are adopting enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. A number of studies discuss the implementation and success of such systems, but our study of the literature indicates that discussions about ERP systems success from the perspectives of key organizational stakeholders are not easy to come across. This study is designed to fill this gap in research. Using surveys in Finland and Estonia, we obtained empirical data from 66 respondents in 44 diverse, private, industrial organizations. Our objective was to determine whether differences exist between two organizational stakeholder groups, i.e. business managers and IT professionals, concerning how each group believe …

An investigation of the impacts of some external contextual factors on ERP systems success assessment: a case of firms in Baltic-Nordic region

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are among the largest information systems (IS) investments made by firms, and the use of such systems is spreading globally. Many researchers have discussed their adoption and implementation, few have investigated the impact of external contextual factors on the success of such technologies in adopting firms. This study aims to fill this gap in research by examining the effects of three external contextual factors, i.e., industry type, industry climate, and national economic climate on ERP success assessment. We obtained data from Estonia and Finland and our analysis shows that industry and national economic climates have significant relationships …

Towards E-Government in a Sub-Saharan African Country

ABSTRACT The use of information communication technologies (ICT) in governance is growing rapidly in many parts of the world. Developing countries in Africa are also making efforts to harness the new technology. In this paper, we provide useful insights regarding the impediments and initiatives of e-government in Nigeria, a Sub-Saharan African (SSA) country. The main problems facing the emergence of e-government in Nigeria have their roots in socioeconomic inadequacies that have plagued several countries in the SSA region. Some of the problems discussed include poor organizational skills, attitudinal problems, inadequate infrastructural support, and poor or unavailable human capital resourc…

Enterprise resource planning systems success assessment : an integrative framework

Ifinedon väitöstutkimus lisää tietämystä tietojärjestelmien onnistumisen arvioinnista yleisesti ja to…

The Internet and SMEs in Sub-Saharan African Countries

The Internet is a global network of interconnected computers using multiple Internet protocols (IP). Increasingly, it is being used to enhance business operation by both small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large organizations around the world (Bunker and MacGregor, 2002; Turban, Lee, King, & Chung, Lee, J., King, D. & Chung 2004). One reason is that the Internet, when used to facilitate e-commerce and e-business, offers several benefits for the adopting organizations (Walczuch, den Braven, & Lundgren, 2000; Turban, et al, 2004). Such benefits include the following: 1) reducing distance barrier, 2) the development of new products and services, 3) opening direct links be…

Key Information Systems Management Issues in Estonia for the 2000s and A Comparative Analysis

AbstractThis study reports key information system (IS) management issues in Estonia, for a second time since 1993. The study enlists the views of knowledgeable practitioners from both the information technology (IT) and non-IT (business managers) fields. The primary objective was to compare and contrast the findings in the previous study with the present effort. Other secondary objectives included investigating the views across professional classifications and sectors. Further, a comparison between Estonia (an emerging economy) and Norway (a developed country) was made. The findings of the study indicate the following: 1) the past decade has produced salient changes in the ranking of key IS…

Motivation and Job Satisfaction among Information Systems Developers — Perspectives from Finland, Nigeria and Estonia: A Preliminary Study

Information Systems (IS) have become one of the most important assets in organisations over the past decades. Adopting and using IS bestows a variety of advantages to organisations that are adept at it (Senker and Senker, 1992). Developing IS within organisations, unarguably serves the objectives of management. To that end, information systems development (ISD) professionals are pivotal in the implementations of such systems and their motivation and job satisfaction equally paramount. Some researchers have also commented on economic value of IS professionals to organisations (Niederman and Crosetto, 1996) Apparently, there is a growing body of literature on the issue of motivation and job s…

An Empirical Research on the Impacts of organisational decisions’ locus, tasks structure rules, knowledge, and IT function’s value on ERP system success

This research examined the impacts of organisational decisions’ locus, tasks structure, rules and procedures, organisational actors’ information technology (IT) skills/knowledge and IT department’s or function’s value perceptions on enterprise resource planning (ERP) system success. While such antecedent factors matter in the discourse, research on their impacts on ERP success is rare. To increase understanding in the area, we proposed a research model and developed pertinent hypotheses that included the above-mentioned factors. Using a cross-sectional field survey, we collected data from 165 firms in three European countries. Data analysis was performed using the partial least squares (PLS…

Moving Towards E-Government in a Developing Society

The use of information communication technologies (ICT) in governance is growing rapidly in many parts of the world. Developing countries in Africa are also making efforts to harness the new technology. In this chapter, we review the problems, progress, and prospects of e-government in Nigeria, a sub-Saharan African (SSA) country. Governments in the developing countries of SSA can benefit from e-government initiatives, as do their counterparts in advanced nations, when the concept of e-governments in SSA is understood, and concerted efforts are committed towards institutionalizing it in the region. This chapter provided useful insights in this regard. We discussed the contribution of the ch…

Factors Affecting E-Business Adoption by SMEs in Sub-Saharan Africa

The use of information communication technologies (ICT) especially the Internet by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is on the increase in many regions of the world, including Africa. Nevertheless, empirical evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) regarding the factors that affect the adoption of e-business is scarce. In that regard, the main objective of this chapter is to fill the research gap with an exploratory study that is aimed at eliciting views from SMEs in Nigeria. This article made use of a theoretical framework encompassing organizational, external and technological contexts to deliberate the issue. A survey is conducted in three Nigerian cities and the findings of the s…
