Word Embeddings for Wine Recommender Systems Using Vocabularies of Experts and Consumers

2018

International audience; This vision paper proposes an approach to use the most advanced word embeddings techniques to bridge the gap between the discourses of experts and non-experts and more specifically the terminologies used by the two communities. Word embeddings makes it possible to find equivalent terms between experts and non-experts, by approach the similarity between words or by revealing hidden semantic relations. Thus, these controlled vocabularies with these new semantic enrichments are exploited in a hybrid recommendation system incorporating content-based ontology and keyword-based ontology to obtain relevant wines recommendations regardless of the level of expertise of the en…

Predictive and Evolutive Cross-Referencing for Web Textual Sources

2017

International audience; One of the main challenges in the domain of competitive intelligence is to harness important volumes of information from the web, and extract the most valuable pieces of information. As the amount of information available on the web grows rapidly and is very heterogeneous, this process becomes overwhelming for experts. To leverage this challenge, this paper presents a vision for a novel process that performs cross-referencing at web scale. This process uses a focused crawler and a semantic-based classifier to cross-reference textual items without expert intervention, based on Big Data and Semantic Web technologies. The system is described thoroughly, and interests of…

Interpreting Heterogeneous Geospatial Data Using Semantic Web Technologies

2016

International audience; The paper presents work on implementation of semantic technologies within a geospatial environment to provide a common base for further semantic interpretation. The work adds on the current works in similar areas where priorities are more on spatial data integration. We assert that having a common unified semantic view on heterogeneous datasets provides a dimension that allows us to extend beyond conventional concepts of searchability, reusability, composability and interoperability of digital geospatial data. It provides contextual understanding on geodata that will enhance effective interpretations through possible reasoning capabilities. We highlight this through …

Managing IFC for civil engineering projects

2003

The "Industrial Foundation Classes" (IFC) are an ISO norm to define all components of a building in a civil engineering project. IFC files are textual files whose size can reach 100 megabytes. Several IFC files can coexist on the same civil engineering project. Due to their size, their handling and sharing is a complex task. In this paper, we present an approach to automatically identify business objects in the IFC files and simplify their visualization and manipulation on the Internet. We construct an IFC Viewer which transforms the IFC file into a XML IFC tree manipulated through the 3D visualization of the building. The IFC Viewer composed a web-based platform called ACTIVe3D BUILD SERVE…

Exploiting Semantic Trajectories Using HMMs and BIM for Worker Safety in Dynamic Environments

2020

International audience; Understanding dynamic behaviors of moving objects using positioning technologies for construction safety monitoring is still an open research issue. One task; that is a small subset in the widespread field of objects dynamics is the enrichment of the location data of users with the semantic information for studying their mobility patterns in the context of the environment. However, incorporating the semantics related to the environment gets complex in case of the dynamic construction sites where the site spaces are kept evolving with time. For instance, new walls and infrastructure supports are added often on sites, while others are detached. Similar situations open …

Integration of Spatial Technologies and Semantic Web Technologies for Industrial Archaeology

2010

International audience; We propose a method that uses the advancement in spatial technologies from current database systems within the Semantic Web Technologies in order to enrich and to populate the knowledge of a domain defined in an OWL-DL ontology. The results of spatial operations and functions are used to populate and to enrich ontologies with new individuals and new relationships. The advantage of spatial analysis within Semantic Web technologies is the diversity of the functionalities provided by the combination of spatial operations and the rule language of the Semantic Web (SWRL). This method is applied in the industrial archaeology domain in order to enhance the knowledge managem…

Implementing a Semantic Catalogue of Geospatial Data.

2014

International audience; Complex spatial analysis requires the combination of heterogeneous datasets. However the identification of a dataset of interest is not a trivial task. Users need to review metadata records in order to select the most suitable datasets. We propose the implementation of a system for metadata management based on semantic web technologies. Our implementation helps the user with the selection task. In this paper, we present a CSW that uses a triplestore as its metadata repository. We implement a translator between Filter Encoding and SPARQL/GeoSPARQL in order to comply to basic OGC standards. Our results are promising however, this is a novel field with room for improvem…

A Review on Applications of Big Data for Disaster Management

2017

International audience; The term " disaster management " comprises both natural and man-made disasters. Highly pervaded with various types of sensors, our environment generates large amounts of data. Thus, big data applications in the field of disaster management should adopt a modular view, going from a component to nation scale. Current research trends mainly aim at integrating component, building, neighborhood and city levels, neglecting the region level for managing disasters. Current research on big data mainly address smart buildings and smart grids, notably in the following areas: energy waste management, prediction and planning of power generation needs, improved comfort, usability …

Understanding the human behaviors in dynamic urban areas of interest

2020

International audience; The fast growth of urban populations across evolving cities is resulting in new types of technical, physical, material, and safety-related challenges and constraints (Chen et al. 2019). Humans perceive, move, and perform actions (called behaviors) in different urban areas, and make interactions with the objects, the other humans, and the environment for achieving their goals for attaining the desired level of satisfaction (Wagner et al., 2018; Chen et al., 2015). More formally, human behaviors are observable actions or reactions of humans in response to external or internal stimuli (Wagner et al., 2018; Hong et al., 2015; Yan et al., 2015). Using Semantics to Manage 3D Scenes in Web Platforms

2005

Computer graphics has widely spread out into various computer applications. After the early wire-frame computer generated images of the 60s, spatial representation of objects improved in the 70s with Boundary Representation (B-Rep) modeling, Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) objects, and free-form surfaces. Realistic rendering in the 90s, taking into account sophisticated dynamic interactions (between objects or between objects and human actors, physical interactions with light, etc.) now make 3D-scenes much better than simple 3D representations of the real world. Indeed, they are a way to conceive products (industrial products, art products, etc.) and to modify them over time, either inter…

How to Enrich Description Logics with Fuzziness

2017

International audience; The paper describes the relation between fuzzy and non-fuzzy description logics. It gives an overview about current research in these areas and describes the difference between tasks for description logics and fuzzy logics. The paper also deals with the transformation properties of description logics to fuzzy logics and backwards. While the process of transformation from a description logic to a fuzzy logic is a trivial inclusion, the other way of reducing information from fuzzy logic to description logic is a difficult task, that will be topic of future work.

IFC and Buildings Lifecycle Management

2008

International audience; This paper presents an extension of the BIM technology that allows to manage information during the entire lifecycle of an AEC project. Usually, AEC projects and facility management are dissociated. Our building information system plays a central role in the improvement of the design and the management process. The building activity generates a great number of data and information of various kinds. The management and the communication of these data by the various participants is complex. Our design and management methods use IFC files to facilitate the sharing process for a better qualification and validation of data.

Modeling Changes for SHOIN(D) Ontologies: An Exhaustive Structural Model

2013

Ontology development starts with a rigorous ontological analysis that provides a conceptualization of the domain to model agreed by the community. An ontology, specified in a formal language, approximates the intended models of this conceptualization. It needs then to be revised and refined until an ontological commitment is found. Also ulterior updates, responding to changes in the domain and/or the conceptualization, are expected to occur throughout the ontology life cycle. To handle a consistent application of changes, a couple of ontology evolution methodologies have been proposed. Maintaining the structural consistency is one of the ontology evolution criteria. It implies modeling chan…

LC3: A spatio-temporal and semantic model for knowledge discovery from geospatial datasets

2015

International audience; There is a need for decision-makers to be provided with both an overview of existing knowledge, and information which is as complete and up-to-date as possible on changes in certain features of the biosphere. Another objective is to bring together all the many attempts which have been made over the years at various levels (international, Community, national and regional) to obtain more information on the environment and the way it is changing. As a result, remote sensing tools monitor large amount of land cover informations enabling study of dynamic processes. However the size of the dataset require new tools to identify pattern and extract knowledge. We propose a mo…

Reasoning with Vague Spatial Information from Upper Mesopotamia (2000BC)

2015

International audience; Concepts such as near, far, south of, etc., are by its own nature vague. However, they are quite common in human language. In the case of historical records, these concepts are often the only source of information regarding the position of ancient places whose exact location has been lost. In our research, we use digitized written records from Upper Mesopotamia (2000BC) from the HIGEOMES project. Our goal is to provide better understanding of the location of places, based on the analysis of spatial statements. In our approach, we analyse cardinal statements between places with known location. Using this information we construct a probabilistic function representing t…

Transforming XML documents to OWL ontologies: A survey

2015

The aims of XML data conversion to ontologies are the indexing, integration and enrichment of existing ontologies with knowledge acquired from these sources. The contribution of this paper consists in providing a classification of the approaches used for the conversion of XML documents into OWL ontologies. This classification underlines the usage profile of each conversion method, providing a clear description of the advantages and drawbacks belonging to each method. Hence, this paper focuses on two main processes, which are ontology enrichment and ontology population using XML data. Ontology enrichment is related to the schema of the ontology (TBox), and ontology population is related to …

CAD Software and Interoperability

2009

Decisions taken during the conception phases in huge architectural projects influence a lot the cost and the schedule of the building construction. To ease this decision-making, many mock-ups have been used as a project prototype. This prototyping is useful to test and to improve the conception of projects. Nowadays, collaborative sites that appear on the Web greatly improve the flexibility of the framework’s actors of a distant project [Aliakseyeu, Martens, Subramanian, Vrouble, & Wesselink, 2001; Balaguer & DeGennaro, 1996; Klinker, Dutoit, Bauer, Bayes, Novak, & Matzke, 2002). Digital mock-ups are used to represent future 3D elements of the final product. Digital mock-ups are…

A Graph-based Tool for the Translation of XML Data to OWL-DL Ontologies

2011

International audience; Today most of the data exchanged between information systems is done with the help of the XML syntax. Unfortunately when these data have to be integrated, the integration becomes difficult because of the semantics' heterogeneity. Consequently, leading researches in the domain of database systems are moving to semantic model in order to store data and its semantics definition. To benefit from these new systems and technologies, and to integrate different data sources, a flexible method consists in populating an existing OWL ontology from XML data. In paper we present such a method based on the definition of a graph which represents rules that drive the populating proc…

A Semantic Web Approach for Geodata Discovery

2013

International audience; Currently, vast amounts of geospatial information are o ffered through OGC's services. However this information has limited formal semantics. The most common method to search for a dataset consists in matching keywords to metadata elements. By adding semantics to available descriptions we could use modern inference and reasoning mechanisms currently available in the SemanticWeb. In this paper we present a novel architecture currently in development in which we use state of the art triplestores as the backend of a CSW service. In our approach, each metadata record is considered an instance of a given class in a domain ontology. Our architecture also adds a spatial dat…

A Framework to Improve the Disaster Response Through a Knowledge-Based Multi-Agent System

2017

The disaster response still faces problems of collaboration due to lack of policies concerning the information exchange during the response. Moreover, plans are prepared to respond to a disaster, but drills to apply them are limited and do not allow to determine their efficiency and conflicts with other organizations. This paper presents a framework allowing for different organizations involving in the disaster response to assess their collaboration through its simulation using an explicit representation of their knowledge. This framework is based on a multi-agent system composed of three generic agent models to represent the organizational structure of disaster response. The decision-makin…

Continuum: A spatiotemporal data model to represent and qualify filiation relationships

2013

International audience; This work introduces an ontology-based spatio-temporal data model to represent entities evolving in space and time. A dynamic phenomenon generates a complex relationship network between the entities involved in the process. At the abstract level, the relationships can be identity or topological filiations. The existence of an identity filiation depends on whether the object changes its identity or not. On the other hand, topological filiations are based exclusively on the spatial component, like in the case of growth, reduction, merging or splitting. When combining identity and topological filiations, six filiation relationships are obtained, forming a second abstrac…

Ontology Views for Ontology Change Management

2014

International audience; In the literature, ontology change management systems (OCMS) are direct implementation of the concept of “change management” stated by reference (Klein, 2004). Ontology change management combines ontol- ogy evolution and versioning features to manage ontol- ogy changes and their impacts. Since 2007, many works have combined ontology evolution and versioning into ontology change management systems (OCMS). The evolution subject has been massively studied in these works. They especially addressed the consistence issue for the application of changes on the ontology. These proposals constituted a consequent background for ontology change management but they did not take i…

An ontology change management approach for facility management

2014

International audience; Facility management (FM) or technical property management is an approach to operate, maintain, improve and adapt buildings and infrastructures of organizations. A FM project requires the cooperation of many actors from different domains so it has to be automated in a constrained collaborative environment. This paper proposes a new approach for ontology change management applied on facility management of such projects. The industrial challenge is, firstly, to ensure consistency of a FM project knowledge from the construction phase to the technical property management phase (after delivery). Secondly, it has to provide to each actor of the project a personal up-to-date…

INCONSISTENCY IDENTIFICATION IN DYNAMIC ONTOLOGIES BASED ON MODEL CHECKING

2012

International audience; The increasing use of ontologies and the cost of changes support the need to manage the evolution of ontologies. A common kind of error in ontology evolution is the logical contradiction declined as incoherences and inconsistences. In this paper, we propose a new approach to predict and identify the incoherences and inconsistences in the evolution of ontologies based on temporal logic and ontology design patterns. We implement the proposed approach using the NuSMV model checker. Based on these patterns, we propose an automated process to guide and monitor the implementation of change while ensuring the consistency of the evolved ontology.

A Survey on Ontology Evaluation Methods

2015

International audience; Ontologies nowadays have become widely used for knowledge representation, and are considered as foundation for Semantic Web. However with their wide spread usage, a question of their evaluation increased even more. This paper addresses the issue of finding an efficient ontology evaluation method by presenting the existing ontology evaluation techniques, while discussing their advantages and drawbacks. The presented ontology evaluation techniques can be grouped into four categories: gold standard-based, corpus-based, task-based and criteria based approaches.

Semantics - Supportive Element for the Cooperative Evaluation of Geographical and Historical Information

2013

International audience; The emergence of the Semantic Web and its underlying knowledge technologies has brought changes in data han- dling. Transferring expert knowledge to machines through knowledge formalization provides us the required support in managing huge datasets like the information in the World Wide Web. In the field of geospatial technology semantic technologies not only entail the capability to achieve higher degree of data integration but also infer semantics to discover new and hidden knowledge. This is of particular interest in the field of archaeology, where complex interrelations among heterogeneous datasets exist. Although researches on seman- tics are active areas in geo…

Use of Geospatial Analyses for Semantic Reasoning

2010

International audience; This work focuses on the integration of the spatial analyses for semantic reasoning in order to compute new axioms of an existing OWL ontology. To make it concrete, we have defined Spatial Built-ins, an extension of existing Built-ins of the SWRL rule language. It permits to run deductive rules with the help of a translation rule engine. Thus, the Spatial SWRL rules are translated to standard SWRL rules. Once the spatial functions of the Spatial SWRL rules are computed with the help of a spatial database system, the resulting translated rules are computed with a reasoning engine such as Racer, Jess or Pellet.

Impact of textual data augmentation on linguistic pattern extraction to improve the idiomaticity of extractive summaries

2021

International audience; The present work aims to develop a text summarisation system for financial texts with a focus on the fluidity of the target language. Linguistic analysis shows that the process of writing summaries should take into account not only terminological and collocational extraction, but also a range of linguistic material referred to here as the "support lexicon", that plays an important role in the cognitive organisation of the field. On this basis, this paper highlights the relevance of pre-training the CamemBERT model on a French financial dataset to extend its domainspecific vocabulary and fine-tuning it on extractive summarisation. We then evaluate the impact of textua…

Semantic Trajectory Modeling for Dynamic Built Environments

2017

This paper presents a data model to capture moving and changing objects in the context of dynamic built environment. Building elements are subject to change which represents semantic trajectories crossing trajectories of users. These semantic trajectories in dynamics built environment permit to capture fine-grained activities and behaviors of users and objects. The data model is based on ontology and description logics to capture logic constraints on semantic trajectories.

Semantics for Spatio-temporal "Smart Queries"

2013

International audience; There is a demand to enhance the meaning of objects and their relationships in the geospatial domain. This need has led to a new fi eld of research called geosemantics, which takes advantage of state of art databases and inference mechanism of ontologies. Current geosemantic proposals involve mixed solutions using spatial databases to store geographic objects and a separate ontology to provide semantic capabilities to the system. However making a simple query involves requesting information from both components which is problematic. In our previous work we proposed a functional standalone based architecture, that uses SWRL to solve spatio-temporal problems. In this pap…

Adaptive Learning Process for the Evolution of Ontology-Described Classification Model in Big Data Context

2016

International audience; One of the biggest challenges in Big Data is to exploit value from large volumes of variable and changing data. For this, one must focus on analyzing the data in these Big Data sources and classify the data items according to a domain model (e.g. an ontology). To automatically classify unstructured text documents according to an ontology, a hierarchical multi-label classification process called Semantic HMC was proposed. This process uses ontologies to describe the classification model. To prevent cold start and user overload, the classification process automatically learns the ontology-described classification model from a very large set of unstructured text documen…

GRAPH-BASED RULES FOR XML DATA CONVERSION TO OWL ONTOLOGY

2010

International audience; The paper presents a flexible method to enrich and populate an existing OWL ontology from XML data based on graph-based rules. These rules are defined in order to populate automatically a new version of an OWL ontology. Today, most of data exchanged between information systems is done with the help of the XML document. Leading researches in the domain of database systems are moving to semantic model in order to store data and its semantics definition. This flexible method consists in populating an existing OWL ontology from XML data. In paper we present such a method based on the definition of a graph which represents rules that drive the populating process.

Semantics knowledge management for the 3D architectural reconstruction of building objects

2010

International audience; This paper presents the framework of an ongoing semantics knowledge management practice. The practice combines geometrical analysis of point cloud and semantic rules to detect 3D building objects for the purpose of achieving computational correctness and efficiency. We assume that improvement in the form of well organized classification (CLA) and order (ORD) is a solution. Statically related knowledge is classified as definition, partial knowledge and ambiguous knowledge and formally revealed with transitions between CWA (closed world assumption) and OWA (open world assumption). To achieve the correctness, formalization is proposed for the validation of the rules thr…

Architectural Reconstruction of 3D Building Objects through Semantic Knowledge Management

2010

International audience; This paper presents an ongoing research which aims at combining geometrical analysis of point clouds and semantic rules to detect 3D building objects. Firstly by applying a previous semantic formalization investigation, we propose a classification of related knowledge as definition, partial knowledge and ambiguous knowledge to facilitate the understanding and design. Secondly an empirical implementation is conducted on a simplified building prototype complying with the IFC standard. The generation of empirical knowledge rules is revealed and semantic scopes are addressed both in the bottom up manner along the line of geometry --> topology --> semantic, and a vice ver…

A Semantic Model to Query Spatial–Temporal Data

2013

There is a growing need for the study of spatial–temporal objects and their relationships. A common approach for this task is the use of relational databases, which unfortunately do not allow inference. In this research, we introduce a new approach that uses the concept of a “continuum” together with ontologies and semantic Web technologies. The continuum allows us to define parent–child relationships between representations of objects. It also allows us to compare the evolution of two different objects and establish the relationships between them along time. Our approach is based on the four-dimensional fluent, which is extended to obtain spatial–temporal qualitative information from the a…

Ontology-based integration of XML data: Schematic marks as a bridge between syntax and semantic level

2007

This paper presents an ontology integration approach of XML data. The approach is composed of two pillars the first of which is based on formal language and XML grammars analysis. The second pillar is based on ontology and domain ontology analysis. The keystone of this architecture which creates a bridge between the two pillars is based on the concept of schematic marks introduced in this paper. These schematic marks make it possible to establish the link between the syntactic level and the semantic level for our integration framework.

National Migration in rural Germany -A complex network perspective on interdependencies for elderly migration and well-being

2022

Spatial planning decisions have to consider complex networks of influences in order to deliver sustainable results. For example, the construction of a retirement home may cause older people to migrate from the aging single-family home areas (SFHA) in the surrounding region. The answer to the question if and where to migrate is an individual human decision and thus depends not only on the surrounding circumstances and influences but also on the experiencesand knowledge every individual has. Therefore, the analysis has to incorporate data on the influences as well as data on the individual subjects as well. There are several approaches inthe field of well-being and quality of life research. Th…

Semantic Catalogue to Manage Data Sources in Disaster Management System

2016

International audience; With the climate change, disasters occur more frequently and the need for efficient disaster management systems becomes highly recommended to save lives. This paper deals with a study of existing systems, with the intention of determining the main recent improvement in the domain. The heterogeneous data integration process is a major central point. Thus, a semantic system with three main components is proposed as a new position in the disaster management systems. These three components are a knowledge base, a reasoner and a semantic catalogue. The knowledge base provides a controlled vocabulary and allows storing information retrieval. The semantic catalogue facilita…

Multi-Domain Retrieval of Geospatial Data Sources Implementing a Semantic Catalogue

2015

International audience; Nowadays, the expertise of a user plays an important role in the search and retrieval in the information systems that usually combines general and specialized knowledge in the construction of queries. In addition, most of the queries systems are currently restricted on specific domains. Tackling these issues, we propose a methodology that implements a semantic catalogue in order to provide a smart queries system for retrieving data sources on the web by means of the extension of the user expertise. We propose the combination of a query expansion method, and the use of similarity measures and controlled vocabularies. Thus, it allows the system to recommend data source…

Propose Semantic Formalization for 3D Reconstruction of Architectural

2010

International audience; Archi3D project is a successful practice well proved by engineering practices. In this paper, we propose to reconstruct semantics for the purpose of reconstruct 3D architecture in Archi3D fundamentally. The formalization approach starts from several hypotheses on semantics which include: there is a core mechanism of semantics which is not limited to conceptual expression level; and a complete expression of semantics necessaries the ―implicitexplicit‖ transition of human side knowledge, etc. The necessity and feasibility concerning applying the proposed method and technology to the practice of Archi3D is discussed systemically by way of semantics revelations on some …

ArchaeoKM: Realizing Knowledge of the Archaeologists

2010

The potentiality of ontology within the faculty of archaeology has recently been felt. However, the use of ontology is limited either within the data interoperability for data sharing within various heterogeneous platforms or data integration of heterogeneous dataset. Thus the full potentiality of ontology is still to be realized within the community of archaeology. We are developing a system "ArchaeoKM" which uses ontology beyond data integration. It uses the strength of ontology to reason the knowledge presented within. Additionally, ArchaeoKM involves archaeologists to define their knowledge of an excavation site through domain rules which they define through the descriptions and observa…

A Meta-Conceptual Modeling Approach for Change Modeling in Applied Ontology

2016

International audience; Formal ontologies are explicitly representation of domain knowledge. Ontology change management should ensure maintaining its consistency, so that its users can continue to cooperate and understand each other. This paper presents a meta-conceptual modeling approach for change modeling in the domain of applied ontology. This modeling approach makes use a mathematical structure to model ontologies and its changes in order to make possible the qualification of changes regarding its consistency. Actually, the paper focuses on the meta-conceptual modeling approach inspired by Guarino's formal ontology building process.

A Semantic Model to Query Spatial-Temporal Data

2013

International audience; There is a growing need for the study of spatial-temporal objects and their relationships. A common approach for this task is the use of relational databases, which unfortunately do not allow inference. In this research we introduce a new approach that uses the concept of "continuum" together with ontologies and semantic web technologies. The "continuum" allows us to defi ne parent-child relationships between representations of objects. It also allows us to compare the evolution of two diff erent objects and establish the relationships between them along time. Our approach is based on the 4D fluent, which is extended to obtain spatial-temporal qualitative information…

Graphe-Based Rules For XML Data Conversion to OWL Ontology

Analysis of the German Commuter Network Period 2013 -2021

2023

Understanding the behavior of commuters is crucial as the number of commuters steadily rises, causing significant traffic congestion in many cities. Indeed, commuter behavior is vital in city and transport planning and policy-making. Previous studies have investigated various factors that may impact commuting decisions. Still, these studies are often limited by the scale of data examined, including time duration, space, and the number of commuters. To address this gap, we gathered large-scale inter-city commuting data in Germany and analyzed the weighted commuting network from 2013 to 2021. This work relies on publicly available data so that the results can be reproduced.

Formalizing Semantic of Natural Language through Conceptualization from Existence

2011

International audience; We propose an outline of an approach to formalize semantic from conceptualization for both natural language (NL) and logic expression mechanisms. This goes beyond the level of discussions at conceptual level which has to either end in conscious/unconscious relativity of understanding or subjective enforcement in the form of definitions instead of expected objective semantic. This approach supports to view from a pure mathematical perspective, and explore and locate the fundamental problems. The semantic formalization mechanism realizes the integration of problem description and the solution expression at absolute semantic level. So a problem describing process is equ…

LC3 A Spatial-temporal Data Model to Study Qualified Land Cover Changes

2015

International audience; Land cover changes caused by humans have reached points never witnessed in history before. Consequences of these changes are environmental degradation, pollution of water, biodiversity loss and climate change among others. It is in this frame that the interest of the scientific community for this type of events has increased in the last decades. Nowadays, researchers have access to sophisticated monitoring tools and techniques. However, the new threat is that over abundance of information would hide relevant facts and processes. In our research we use data from the CORINE (Coordination of Information on the Environment) program. This program has compiled land cover i…

The spatio-temporal semantics from a perdurantism perspective

2013

International audience; In this paper we present the "continuum model". Our work follows a "perdurantism" approach and is designed to handle dynamic phenomena extending the 4D-fluent with the use of semantic web technologies. In our approach we represent dynamic entities as constituted by time slices each with semantic, geometric and temporal components. Our model is able to link the diverse representations of an entity and allows the inference of qualitative information from quantitative one. The inference results are later added to the ontology in order to enhance the knowledge base. The model has been implemented using OWL and SWRL. Our preliminary results are promising and we plan to fu…

Agent-based modelling of urban expansion and land cover change: a prototype for the analysis of commuting patterns in Geneva, Switzerland

2023

Agent-based modelling has been used in many studies of urban expansion, land use and land cover change patterns. While representing a powerful tool for depicting and formulating predictions about the evolution of interconnected complex systems, this method also poses a series of challenges to the researcher community, most notably in terms of model calibration and validation, and output data visualisation. Based on these findings, we present an agent-based model developed in GAMA, coupled with a data exploration platform coded in python, for analysing commuting patterns in the canton of Geneva, Switzerland. Output datasets generated from a set of simple evolution rules for the agents, are d…

Big Data Applications for Disaster Management

2017

International audience; The term "disaster management" comprises both natural and man-made disasters. Current research on big data mainly address smart buildings and smart grids, notably in the following areas: energy waste management, prediction and planning of power generation needs (based on smart meter readings,…
