Updated determination of chiral couplings and vacuum condensates from hadronic tau decay data

2016

We analyze the lowest spectral moments of the left-right two-point correlation function, using all known short-distance constraints and the recently updated ALEPH V-A spectral function from tau decays. This information is used to determine the low-energy couplings L10 and C87 of chiral perturbation theory and the lowest-dimensional contributions to the Operator Product Expansion of the left-right correlator. A detailed statistical analysis is implemented to assess the theoretical uncertainties, including violations of quark-hadron duality.

Bs,d0→ℓ+ℓ− Decays in Two-Higgs Doublet Models

2016

Abstract We study the rare leptonic decays B s , d 0 → l + l − within the general framework of the aligned two-Higgs doublet model [1]. A complete one-loop calculation of the relevant short-distance Wilson coefficients is presented, with a detailed technical summary of the results. The phenomenological constraints imposed by present data on the model parameters are also investigated.

Bottom-up approach within the electroweak effective theory: Constraining heavy resonances

2020

The LHC has confirmed the existence of a mass gap between the known particles and possible new states. Effective field theory is then the appropriate tool to search for low-energy signals of physics beyond the Standard Model. We adopt the general formalism of the electroweak effective theory, with a non-linear realization of the electroweak symmetry breaking, where the Higgs is a singlet with independent couplings. At higher energies we consider a generic resonance Lagrangian which follows the above-mentioned non-linear realization and couples the light particles to bosonic heavy resonances with $J^P=0^\pm$ and $J^P=1^\pm$. Integrating out the resonances and assuming a proper short-distance…

ChPT parameters from tau-decay data

2015

Using the updated ALEPH V-A spectral function from tau decays, we determine the lowest spectral moments of the left-right correlator and extract dynamical information on order parameters of the QCD chiral symmetry breaking. Uncertainties associated with violations of quark-hadron duality are estimated from the data, imposing all known short-distance constraints on a resonance-based parametrization. Employing proper pinched weight functions, we obtain an accurate determination of the effective chiral couplings L10 and C87 and the dimension-six and -eight contributions in the Operator Product Expansion.

Large-NCproperties of theρandf0(600)mesons from unitary resonance chiral dynamics

2011

We construct $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ amplitudes that fulfill exact elastic unitarity, account for one-loop chiral perturbation theory contributions and include all $1/{N}_{C}$ leading terms, with the only limitation of considering just the lowest-lying nonet of exchanged resonances. Within such a scheme, the ${N}_{C}$ dependence of $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ and $\ensuremath{\rho}$ masses and widths is discussed. Robust conclusions are drawn in the case of the $\ensuremath{\rho}$ resonance, confirming that it is a stable meson in the limit of a large number of QCD colors, ${N}_{C}$. Less definitive conclusions are reached in the scalar-isoscalar sector. With the present quality of dat…

The Physics of the Higgs-like Boson

2013

The present knowledge on the Higgs-like boson discovered at the LHC is summarized. The data accumulated so far are consistent with the Standard Model predictions and put interesting constraints on alternative scenarios of electroweak symmetry breaking. The measured couplings to gauge bosons and third-generation fermions indicate that a Higgs particle has indeed been found. More precise data are needed to clarify whether it is the unique Higgs boson of the Standard Model or the first member of a new variety of dynamical (either elementary or composite) fields.

Sensitivity to charged scalars in B → D(*)τν and B → τν decays

2013

We analyze the recent experimental evidence for an excess of $\tau$-lepton production in several exclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models. These decay modes are sensitive to the exchange of charged scalars and constrain strongly their Yukawa interactions. While the usual Type-II scenario cannot accommodate the recent BaBar data, this is possible within more general models in which the charged-scalar couplings to up-type quarks are not as suppressed. Both the $B\to D^{(*)}\tau\nu_\tau$ and the $B\to\tau\nu_\tau$ data can be fitted within the framework of the Aligned Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, but the resulting parameter ranges are in conflict with the …

B -> D(*) Tau Nu decays in two-Higgs-doublet models

2013

A sizable excess with respect to the SM expectation has been reported recently by the BaBar collaboration in the decay rates B -> D(*) Tau Nu, normalized by the corresponding light lepton modes. A violation of lepton flavor universality as suggested by this excess could be due to a charged Higgs mediating these processes at tree level. In this talk we analyze the implications of the observed excess within the framework of two-Higgs-doublet models, considering also the bounds from other semileptonic and leptonic decays of B and D(s) mesons. Prospects for B -> D(*) Tau Nu decays at future Super-Flavor Factories are also discussed.

What can be learned from the Belle spectrum for the decay τ−→ντKSπ−

2008

Abstract A theoretical description of the differential decay spectrum for the decay τ − → ν τ K S π − , which is based on the contributing Kπ vector and scalar form factors F + K π ( s ) and F 0 K π ( s ) being calculated in the framework of resonance chiral theory (R χ T), additionally imposing constraints from dispersion relations as well as short distance QCD, provides a good representation of a recent measurement of the spectrum by the Belle Collaboration. Our fit allows to deduce the total branching fraction B [ τ − → ν τ K S π − ] = 0.427 ± 0.024 % by integrating the spectrum, as well as the K ∗ resonance parameters M K ∗ = 895.3 ± 0.2 MeV and Γ K ∗ = 47.5 ± 0.4 MeV , where the last t…

Towards a consistent estimate of the chiral low-energy constants

2006

Guided by the large-N_C limit of QCD, we construct the most general chiral resonance Lagrangian that can generate chiral low-energy constants up to O(p^6). By integrating out the resonance fields, the low-energy constants are parametrized in terms of resonance masses and couplings. Information on those couplings and on the low-energy constants can be extracted by analysing QCD Green functions of currents both for large and small momenta. The chiral resonance theory generates Green functions that interpolate between QCD and chiral perturbation theory. As specific examples we consider the VAP and SPP Green functions.

Low-energy signals of strongly-coupled electroweak symmetry-breaking scenarios

2015

The non-observation of new particles at the LHC suggests the existence of a mass gap above the electroweak scale. This situation is adequately described through a general electroweak effective theory with the established fields and Standard Model symmetries. Its couplings contain all information about the unknown short-distance dynamics which is accessible at low energies. We consider a generic strongly-coupled scenario of electroweak symmetry breaking, with heavy states above the gap, and analyze the imprints that its lightest bosonic excitations leave on the effective Lagrangian couplings. Different quantum numbers of the heavy states imply different patterns of low-energy couplings, with…

QCD exotics versus a standard model Higgs boson

2012

The present collider data put severe constraints on any type of new strongly interacting particle coupling to the Higgs boson. We analyze the phenomenological limits on exotic quarks belonging to nontriplet $SU(3{)}_{C}$ representations and their implications on Higgs searches. The discovery of the standard model Higgs, in the experimentally allowed mass range, would exclude the presence of exotic quarks coupling to it. Thus, such QCD particles could only exist provided that their masses do not originate in the SM Higgs mechanism.

Strong enhancement of epsilon '/epsilon through final state interactions

1999

We quantify the important effect of strong final state interactions in the weak $K\to2\pi$ amplitudes, using the measured $\pi$--$\pi$ phase shifts with J=0 and $I=0,2$. The final rescattering of the two pions provides a strong enhancement of the $\Delta I =1/2$ amplitude, which so far has been neglected in the theoretical predictions of $\epsilon'/\epsilon$. This correction increases the Standard Model prediction of $\epsilon'/\epsilon$ to values in good agreement with the experimental measurements.

Gamma(Z --> bb): A signature of hard mass terms for a heavy top

1988

Abstract We calculate analytically the weak radiative corrections to the weak neutral current gauge boson-bottom fermion vertex, keeping the mass mt of the internal fermion line for the relevant diagrams. We find, to order α, a hard mass-term dependence m t 2 M W 2 of the amplitude, for large mt values. Its origin comes from the unphysical charged Higgs coupling to fermions in the renormalizable gauge or, equivalently, from the longitudinal charged gauge boson couplings. The diagonal Z0 decay width to b-quarks decreases, due to these weak radiative corrections, by 0.6%–2.5% when the top mass mt varies from 45 to 200 GeV.

Pinched weights and duality violation in QCD sum rules: A critical analysis

2010

We analyze the so-called pinched weights, that are generally thought to reduce the violation of quarkhadron duality in finite-energy sum rules. After showing how this is not true in general, we explain how to address this question for the left-right correlator and any particular pinched weight, taking advantage of our previous work [1], where the possible high-energy behavior of the left-right spectral function was studied. In particular, we show that the use of pinched weights allows to determine with high accuracy the dimension six and eight contributions in the operator-product expansion, O-6 = (-4.3(-0.7)(+0.9)) x 10(-3) GeV6 and O-8 = (-7.2(-5.3)(+4.2)) x 10(-3) GeV8.

Bottom quark mass and alpha_s from the Upsilon system

1997

The mass of the bottom quark and the strong coupling constant alpha_s are determined from QCD moment sum rules for the Upsilon system. Two analyses are performed using both the pole mass M_b as well as the mass m_b in the $\MSb$ scheme. In the pole-mass scheme large perturbative corrections resulting from coulombic contributions have to be resummed. In the $\MSb$ scheme this can be avoided by an appropriate choice for the renormalization scale. For the bottom quark mass we obtain M_b = 4.60 +- 0.02 GeV and m_b(m_b) = 4.13 +- 0.06 GeV. Our combined result from both determinations for the strong coupling is alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.119 +- 0.008.

Reanalysis of pion pion phase shifts from K -> pi pi decays

2009

We re-investigate the impact of isospin violation for extracting the s-wave pion pion scattering phase shift difference delta_0(M_K) - delta_2(M_K) from K -> pi pi decays. Compared to our previous analysis in 2003, more precise experimental data and improved knowledge of low-energy constants are used. In addition, we employ a more robust data-driven method to obtain the phase shift difference delta_0(M_K) - delta_2(M_K) = (52.5 \pm 0.8_{exp} \pm 2.8_{theor}) degrees.

A sum rule analysis of the hadronic τ -decay data can be used to determine the low-energy constants L 10 r ( μ ) and C 87 r ( μ ) . These constants are QCD chiral-order parameters, which appear at order p 4 and p 6 , respectively, in the chiral perturbation theory expansion of the V − A correlator. At order p 4 we obtain L 10 r ( M ρ ) = − ( 5.22 ± 0.06 ) ⋅ 10 − 3 . Including in the analysis the order p 6 contributions, we get L 10 r ( M ρ ) = − ( 4.06 ± 0.39 ) ⋅ 10 − 3 and C 87 r ( M ρ ) = ( 4.89 ± 0.19 ) ⋅ 10 − 3 GeV − 2 .

Updated Standard Model Prediction for ε′/ε

2018

Abstract A recent lattice evaluation of e ′ / e , finding a 2.1 σ deviation from the experimental value, has revived the old debate about a possible e ′ / e anomaly. The unfounded claims of a too low Standard Model prediction are based on incorrect estimates that neglect the long-distance re-scattering of the final pions in K → 2 π . In view of the current situation, we have recently updated the Standard Model calculation, including all known short- and long-distance contributions. Our result, Re ( e ′ / e ) = ( 15 ± 7 ) ⋅ 10 − 4 [H. Gisbert and A. Pich, “Direct CP violation in K 0 → π π : Standard Model Status”, Rept. Prog. Phys. 81 (2018) no. 7, 076201 arXiv:1712.06147 [hep-ph] .], is in …

Isospin Violation inϵ′

2003

On the basis of a next-to-leading-order calculation in chiral perturbation theory, the first complete analysis of isospin breaking for direct $CP$ violation in ${K}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2\ensuremath{\pi}$ decays is performed. We find a destructive interference between three different sources of isospin violation in the $CP$ violation parameter ${ϵ}^{\ensuremath{'}}$. Within the uncertainties of large-${N}_{c}$ estimates for the low-energy constants, the isospin violating correction for ${ϵ}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ is below 15%.

Theoretical overview of kaon decays

2014

Kaon decays are an important testing ground of the electroweak flavour theory. They can provide new signals of CP violation and, perhaps, a window into physics beyond the Standard Model. At the same time, they exhibit an interesting interplay of long-distance QCD effects in flavour-changing transitions. A brief overview is presented, focusing on a few selected topics of particular interest. A more detailed and comprehensive review can be found in arXiv:1107.6001.

Flavour alignment in multi-Higgs-doublet models

2017

Extended electroweak scalar sectors containing several doublet multiplets require flavour-aligned Yukawa matrices to prevent the appearance at tree level of unwanted flavour- changing neutral-current transitions. We analyse the misalignment induced by one-loop quantum corrections and explore possible generalizations of the alignment condition and their compatibility with current experimental constraints. The hypothesis of flavour alignment at a high scale turns out to be consistent with all known phenomenological tests.

QCD formulation of the tau decay and determination of Lambda (MS)

1988

Abstract We present a simple formulation of the inclusive and exclusive semi-hadronic decays of the tau lepton using QCD-duality finite energy sum rules (FESRs). We find that the tau decay is a good laboratory for measuring the QCD scaleΛ. Within the present experimental accuracy, we obtain Λ M S ¯ ⋍ 100–200 MeV to four loops. This prediction can be sensibly improved once the experimental situation has been clarified.

Updated determination of $\alpha_s(m_\tau^2)$ from tau decays

2016

Using the most recent release of the ALEPH $\tau$ decay data, we present a very detailed phenomenological update of the $\alpha_s(m_\tau^2)$ determination. We have exploited the sensitivity to the strong coupling in many different ways, exploring several complementary methodologies. All determinations turn out to be in excellent agreement, allowing us to extract a very reliable value of the strong coupling. We find $\alpha_{s}^{(n_f=3)}(m_\tau^2) = 0.328 \pm 0.012$ which implies $\alpha_{s}^{(n_f=5)}(M_Z^{2}) = 0.1197\pm 0.0014$. We critically revise previous work, and point out the problems flawing some recent analyses which claim slightly smaller values.

Low-mass fermiophobic charged Higgs phenomenology in two-Higgs-doublet models

2014

After the recent discovery of a Higgs-like boson, the possibility of an enlarged scalar sector arises as a natural question. Experimental searches for charged scalars have been already performed with negative results. We analyze the phenomenology associated with a fermiophobic charged Higgs (it does not couple to fermions at tree level), in two-Higgs-doublet models. All present experimental bounds are evaded trivially in this case, and one needs to consider other decay and production channels. We study the associated production of a charged Higgs with either a $W$ or a neutral scalar boson, and the relevant decays for a light fermiophobic charged Higgs. The interesting features of this scen…

Flavour-changing top decays in the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model

2015

We perform a complete one-loop computation of the two-body flavour-changing top decays $t \rightarrow c h$ and $t \rightarrow c V$ ($V= \gamma, Z$), within the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model. We evaluate the impact of the model parameters on the associated branching ratios, taking into account constraints from flavour data and measurements of the Higgs properties. Assuming that the $125$~GeV Higgs corresponds to the lightest CP-even scalar of the CP-conserving aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, we find that the rates for such flavour-changing top decays lie below the expected sensitivity of the future high-luminosity phase of the LHC. Measurements of the Higgs signal strength in the di-photo…

Determination of the Chiral Couplings L10 and C87 from Semileptonic τ Decays

2008

Using recent precise hadronic tau-decay data on the V-A spectral function, and general properties of QCD such as analyticity, the operator product expansion and chiral perturbation theory, we get accurate values for the QCD chiral order parameters L_10^r(M_rho) and C_87^r(M_rho). These two low-energy constants appear at order p^4 and p^6, respectively, in the chiral perturbation theory expansion of the V-A correlator. At order p^4 we obtain L_10^r(M_rho) = -(5.22\pm 0.06)10^{-3}. Including in the analysis the two-loop (order p^6) contributions, we get L_10^r(M_rho) = -(4.06\pm 0.39)10^{-3} and C_87^r(M_rho) = (4.89\pm 0.19)10^{-3}GeV^{-2}. Strong Enhancement ofɛ′/ɛthrough Final State Interactions

The final rescattering of the two pions provides a strong enhancement of the $\ensuremath{\Delta}I\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1/2$ amplitude, which so far has been neglected in the theoretical predictions of ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}^{\ensuremath{'}}/\ensuremath{\varepsilon}$. Electric Dipole Moments in Two-Higgs-Doublet Models

2014

Electric dipole moments are extremely sensitive probes for additional sources of CP violation in new physics models. Specifically, they have been argued in the past to exclude new CP-violating phases in two-Higgs-doublet models. Since recently models including such phases have been discussed widely, we revisit the available constraints in the presence of mechanisms which are typically invoked to evade flavour-changing neutral currents. To that aim, we start by assessing the necessary calculations on the hadronic, nuclear and atomic/molecular level, deriving expressions with conservative error estimates. Their phenomenological analysis in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models yields strong…

Violation of quark-hadron duality and spectral chiral moments in QCD

2010

We analyze the spectral moments of the V - A two-point correlation function. Using all known short-distance constraints and the most recent experimental data from tau decays, we determine the lowest spectral moments, trying to assess the uncertainties associated with the so-called violations of quark-hadron duality. We have generated a large number of acceptable spectral functions, satisfying all conditions, and have used them to extract the wanted hadronic parameters through a careful statistical analysis. We obtain accurate values for the chi PT couplings L-10 and C-87, and a realistic determination of the dimension six and eight contributions in the operator product expansion, O-6 = (-5.…

Spectral distribution for the decay τ→ντKπ

2006

Abstract With the newly available data sets on hadronic τ decays from the B -factories BaBar and BELLE, and future data from BESIII, precise information on the decay distributions will soon become available. This calls for an improvement of the decay spectra also on the theoretical side. In this work, the distribution function for the decay τ → ν τ K π will be presented with the relevant Kπ vector and scalar form factors being calculated in the framework of the resonance chiral theory, also taking into account additional constraints from dispersion relations and short-distances. As a by-product the slope and curvature of the vector form factor F + K π ( s ) are determined to be λ + ′ = 25.6…

Tau-decay determination of the strong coupling

2019

We review the current status of the determination of the strong coupling from tau decay. Using the most recent release of the ALEPH data, a very comprehensive phenomenological analysis has been performed, exploring all strategies previously considered in the literature and several complementary approaches. Once their actual uncertainties are properly assessed, the results from all adopted methodologies are in excellent agreement, leading to a very robust and reliable value of the strong coupling, $\alpha_s^{(n_f=3)}(m_\tau^2) = 0.328\pm 0.013$, which implies $\alpha_s^{(n_f=5)}(M_Z^2) = 0.1197\pm 0.0015$.

Scalar contributions to $b\to c (u) \tau \nu$ transitions

We find that scalar contributions with the simultaneous presence of both left- and right-handed couplings to quarks can explain the available data, specifically $R(D^{(*)})$ together with the measured differential distributions. However, the constraints from the total $B_c$ width present a slight tension with the current data on $B \to D^{*}\tau \nu$ in this sc…

Fingerprints of heavy scales in electroweak effective Lagrangians

2017

The couplings of the electroweak effective theory contain information on the heavy-mass scales which are no-longer present in the low-energy Lagrangian. We build a general effective Lagrangian, implementing the electroweak chiral symmetry breaking $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R\to SU(2)_{L+R}$, which couples the known particle fields to heavier states with bosonic quantum numbers $J^P=0^\pm$ and $1^\pm$. We consider colour-singlet heavy fields that are in singlet or triplet representations of the electroweak group. Integrating out these heavy scales, we analyze the pattern of low-energy couplings among the light fields which are generated by the massive states. We adopt a generic non-linear realiz…

Confronting hadronic tau decays with non-leptonic kaon decays

In the chiral limit, the $D=6$ contribution to the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) of the $\mathrm{VV-AA}$ correlator of quark currents only depends on two vacuum condensates, which can be related to hadronic matrix elements associated to CP violation in non-leptonic kaon decays. We use those relations to determine $\langle(\pi\pi)_{I=2}|\mathcal{Q}_{8}|K\rangle$, using the updated ALEPH spectral functions. Alternatively, we use those relations in the opposite direction. Taking the values of the matrix elements from the lattice to obtain the $D=6$ vacuum elements provides a new short-distance constraint which allows for an inclusive determination of $f_{\pi}$ and an updated value for the $…

Towards a general analysis of LHC data within two-Higgs-doublet models

2013

The data accumulated so far confirm the Higgs-like nature of the new boson discovered at the LHC. The Standard Model Higgs hypothesis is compatible with the collider results and no significant deviations from the Standard Model have been observed neither in the flavour sector nor in electroweak precision observables. We update the LHC and Tevatron constraints on CP-conserving two-Higgs-doublet models without tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents. While the relative sign between the top Yukawa and the gauge coupling of the 126 GeV Higgs is found be the same as in the SM, at 90% CL, there is a sign degeneracy in the determination of its bottom and tau Yukawa couplings. This results in …

Kaon Physics: Theory Overview

2012

Kaon decays have played a key role in the construction of the Standard Model and continue to be an important testing ground of the electroweak flavour theory. They can provide new signals of CP-violation phenomena and, perhaps, a window into physics beyond the Standard Model. The interplay of long-distance QCD effects in strangeness-changing transitions can be analyzed, combining the short-distance Operator Product Expansion with Chiral Perturbation Theory techniques. A brief overview is presented, focusing on a few selected decay modes. A more detailed and comprehensive review can be found in arXiv:1107.6001.

Sensitivity to charged scalars in B -> D-(*)tau nu(tau) and B -> tau nu(tau) decays

2013

We analyze the recent experimental evidence for an excess of tau-lepton production in several exclusive semileptonic B-meson decays in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models. Both the B -> D-(*)tau nu(tau) and the B -> tau nu(tau) data can be fitted within the framework of the Aligned Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, but the resulting parameter ranges are in conflict with the constraints …

Determination of the QCD coupling from ALEPHτdecay data

2016

We present a comprehensive study of the determination of the strong coupling from $\tau$ decay, using the most recent release of the experimental ALEPH data. We critically review all theoretical strategies used in previous works and put forward various novel approaches which allow to study complementary aspects of the problem. We investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods, trying to uncover their potential hidden weaknesses and test the stability of the obtained results under slight variations of the assumed inputs. We perform several determinations, using different methodologies, and find a very consistent set of results. All determinations are in excellent agree…

Precision Tau Physics

2013

Precise measurements of the lepton properties provide stringent tests of the Standard Model and accurate determinations of its parameters. We overview the present status of tau physics, highlighting the most recent developments, and discuss the prospects for future improvements. The leptonic decays of the tau lepton probe the structure of the weak currents and the universality of their couplings to the W boson. The universality of the leptonic Z couplings has also been tested through leptonic Z decays. The hadronic tau decay modes constitute an ideal tool for studying low-energy effects of the strong interaction in very clean conditions. Accurate determinations of the QCD coupling and the C…

Oblique S and T Constraints on Electroweak Strongly-Coupled Models with a Light Higgs

2014

Using a general effective Lagrangian implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2) L ⊗ SU(2) R → SU(2) L+R , we present a one-loop calculation of the oblique S and T parameters within electroweak strongly-coupled models with a light scalar. Imposing a proper ultraviolet behaviour, we determine S and T at next-to-leading order in terms of a few resonance parameters. The constraints from the global fit to electroweak precision data force the massive vector and axial-vector states to be heavy, with masses above the TeV scale, and suggest that the W + W − and ZZ couplings of the Higgs-like scalar should be close to the Standard Model value. Our findings are generic, since they only rely on so…

Exclusive radiative B-meson decays within the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model

2012

In the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, the alignment of Yukawa matrices in flavour space guarantees the absence of tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents, while allowing at the same time for new sources of CP violation, implying potentially large effects in many low-energy processes. In this work we study the constraints from exclusive radiative $B\to V\gamma$ decays, where $V$ denotes a light vector meson. The current experimental data on the CP-averaged branching ratios and the direct CP and isospin asymmetries are analyzed. It is found that, while the branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries do not constrain the parameter space much further compared to the inclusive $B\to X_{s,d…

τ→πππντ decays and the a1(1260) off-shell width revisited

2010

Abstract The τ → π π π ν τ decay is driven by the hadronization of the axial-vector current. Within the resonance chiral theory, and considering the large- N C expansion, this process has been studied in Ref. [1] (D. Gomez Dumm, A. Pich, J. Portoles, 2004). In the light of later developments we revise here this previous work by including a new off-shell width for the lightest a1 resonance that provides a good description of the τ → π π π ν τ spectrum and branching ratio. We also consider the role of the ρ ( 1450 ) resonance in these observables. Thus we bring in an overall description of the τ → π π π ν τ process in excellent agreement with our present experimental knowledge.

We work out the relevant Lagrangian that describes the axial-vector current hadronization contributing to these processes, in particular the local ${a}_{1}(1260)\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\rho}(770)$-Goldstone interactions. The new coupling constants are constrained by imposing the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding spectral function within QCD. Charged-Higgs phenomenology in the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model

2010

The alignment in flavour space of the Yukawa matrices of a general two-Higgs-doublet model results in the absence of tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents. In addition to the usual fermion masses and mixings, the aligned Yukawa structure only contains three complex parameters zeta(f), which are potential new sources of CP violation [1]. For particular values of these three parameters all known specific implementations of the model based on discrete Z(2) symmetries are recovered. One of the most distinctive features of the two-Higgs-doublet model is the presence of a charged scalar H-+/-. In this work, we discuss its main phenomenological consequences in flavour-changing processes at …

Large-$N_c$ naturalness in coupled-channel meson-meson scattering

2014

The analysis of hadronic interactions with effective field theory techniques is complicated by the appearance of a large number of low-energy constants, which are usually fitted to data. On the other hand, the large-$N_c$ limit imposes natural short-distance constraints on these low-energy constants, providing a parameter reduction. A Bayesian interpretation of the expected $1/N_c$ accuracy allows for an easy and efficient implementation of these constraints, using an augmented $\chi^2$. We apply this approach to the analysis of meson-meson scattering, in conjunction with chiral perturbation theory to one loop and coupled-channel unitarity, and show that it helps to largely reduce the many …

Precision physics with inclusive QCD processes

2021

The inclusive production of hadrons through electroweak currents can be rigorously analysed with short-distance theoretical tools. The associated observables are insensitive to the involved infrared behaviour of the strong interaction, allowing for very precise tests of Quantum Chromodynamics. The theoretical predictions for $\sigma(e^+e^-\to\mathrm{hadrons})$ and the hadronic decay widths of the $\tau$ lepton and the $Z$, $W$ and Higgs bosons have reached an impressive accuracy of $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^4)$. Precise experimental measurements of the $Z$ and $\tau$ hadronic widths have made possible the accurate determination of the strong coupling at two very different energy scales, providi…

Form-factors and current correlators: chiral couplingsL10r(μ) andC87r(μ) at NLO in 1/NC

2008

Using the resonance chiral theory Lagrangian, we perform a calculation of the vector and axial-vector two-point functions at the next-to-leading order (NLO) in the 1/N-C expansion. We have analyzed these correlators within the single-resonance approximation and have also investigated the corrections induced by a second multiplet of vector and axial-vector resonance states. Imposing the correct QCD short-distance constraints, one determines the difference of the two correlators Pi(t) equivalent to Pi(VV)(t)-Pi(AA)(t) in terms of the pion decay constant and resonance masses. Its low momentum expansion fixes then the low-energy chiral couplings L 1 0 and C 8 7 at NLO, keeping full control of t…

Heavy Resonances in the Electroweak Effective Lagrangian

2015

As a first step towards the construction of a general electroweak effective Lagrangian incorporating heavy states, we present here a simplified version where only vector and axial-vector spin-1 triplets are involved. We adopt an effective field theory formalism, implementing the electroweak chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)L x SU(2)R -> SU(2)L+R, which couples the heavy states to the SM fields. At low energies, the heavy degrees of freedom are integrated out from the action and their effects are hidden in the low-energy couplings of the Electroweak Effective Theory, which can be tested experimentally. Short-distance constraints are also implemented, requiring a proper behaviour in the high-…

Electroweak effective theory and beyond Standard Model resonances

2021

We consider a non-linear realization of the electroweak symmetry-breaking pattern $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R/SU(2)_{L+R}$ to construct a low-energy effective theory, later extended by the inclusion of heavy new-physics resonances. After assuming appropriate high-energy constraints given by Weinberg sum-rules and the asymptotic behaviour of form-factors, we obtain relations between resonance masses and some low-energy effective couplings. These predictions are compared with current experimental data and some resonance mass bounds are inferred.

Low-energy constants from resonance chiral theory

2008

I discuss the recent attempts to build an effective chiral Lagrangian incorporating massive resonance states. A useful approximation scheme to organize the resonance Lagrangian is provided by the large-Nc limit of QCD. Integrating out the resonance fields, one recovers the usual chiral perturbation theory Lagrangian with explicit values for the low-energy constants, parameterized in terms of resonance masses and couplings. The resonance chiral theory generates Green functions that interpolate between QCD and chiral perturbation theory. Analyzing these Green functions, both for large and small momenta, one gets QCD constraints on the resonance couplings and, therefore, information on the low…

Scalar contributions to b→c(u)τν transitions

We find that scalar contributions with the simultaneous presence of both left- and right-handed couplings to quarks can explain the available data, specifically R ( D ( ⁎ ) ) together with the measured differential distributions. However, the constraints from the total B c width present a slight tension with the current data on B → D ⁎ τ ν in this scenario, preferring smaller values fo…

Kaon Decays in the Standard Model

2011

A comprehensive overview of kaon decays is presented. The Standard Model predictions are discussed in detail, covering both the underlying short-distance electroweak dynamics and the important interplay of QCD at long distances. Chiral perturbation theory provides a universal framework for treating leptonic, semileptonic and nonleptonic decays including rare and radiative modes. All allowed decay modes with branching ratios of at least 10^(-11) are analyzed. Some decays with even smaller rates are also included. Decays that are strictly forbidden in the Standard Model are not considered in this review. The present experimental status and the prospects for future improvements are reviewed.

Direct CP violation in ${K^0\to\pi\pi}$ : Standard Model Status

2017

In 1988 the NA31 experiment presented the first evidence of direct CP violation in the $K^0\to\pi\pi$ decay amplitudes. A clear signal with a $7.2\,\sigma$ statistical significance was later established with the full data samples from the NA31, E731, NA48 and KTeV experiments, confirming that CP violation is associated with a $\Delta S=1$ quark transition, as predicted by the Standard Model. However, the theoretical prediction for the measured ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ has been a subject of strong controversy along the years. Although the underlying physics was already clarified in 2001, the recent release of improved lattice data has revived again the theoretical debate. We review t…

ICHEP 2014 Summary: Theory Status after the First LHC Run

2016

A brief overview of the main highlights discussed at ICHEP 2014 is presented. The experimental data confirm that the scalar boson discovered at the LHC couples to other particles as predicted in the Standard Model. This constitutes a great success of the present theoretical paradigm, which has been confirmed as the correct description at the electroweak scale. At the same time, the negative searches for signals of new phenomena tightly constrain many new-physics scenarios, challenging previous theoretical wisdom and opening new perspectives in fundamental physics. Fresh ideas are needed to face the many pending questions unanswered within the Standard Model framework.

Integrating out resonances in strongly-coupled electroweak scenarios

2016

Accepting that there is a mass gap above the electroweak scale, the Electroweak Effective Theory (EWET) is an appropriate tool to describe this situation. Since the EWET couplings contain information on the unknown high-energy dynamics, we consider a generic strongly-coupled scenario of electroweak symmetry breaking, where the known particle fields are coupled to heavier states. Then, and by integrating out these heavy fields, we study the tracks of the lightest resonances into the couplings. The determination of the low-energy couplings (LECs) in terms of resonance parameters can be made more precise by considering a proper short-distance behaviour on the Lagrangian with heavy states, sinc…

alpha(s)(m(Z)) from tau decays with matching conditions at three loops

1997

Using the recent four-loop calculations of the QCD beta-function and the three-loop matching coefficients we study the induced error in $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ obtained from $\alpha_s(m_tau)$ due to the evolution procedure. We show that, when consistent matching and running is used at this order, these errors are pushed below 0.0005 in $\alpha_s(m_Z)$.

LHC constraints on two-Higgs doublet models

2013

A new Higgs-like boson with mass around 126 GeV has recently been discovered at the LHC. The available data on this new particle is analyzed within the context of two-Higgs doublet models without tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents. Keeping the generic Yukawa structure of the Aligned Two-Higgs Doublet Model framework, we study the implications of the LHC data on the allowed scalar spectrum. We analyze both the CP-violating and CP-conserving cases, and a few particular limits with a reduced number of free parameters, such as the usual models based on discrete Z(2) symmetries.

Determination of the chiral couplingsL10andC87from semileptonicτdecays

2008

Using recent precise hadronic {tau}-decay data on the V-A spectral function, and general properties of QCD such as analyticity, the operator product expansion, and chiral perturbation theory, we get accurate values for the QCD chiral order parameters L{sub 10}{sup r}(M{sub {rho}}) and C{sub 87}{sup r}(M{sub {rho}}). These two low-energy constants appear at order p{sup 4} and p{sup 6}, respectively, in the chiral perturbation theory expansion of the V-A correlator. At order p{sup 4} we obtain L{sub 10}{sup r}(M{sub {rho}})=-(5.22{+-}0.06)x10{sup -3}. Including in the analysis the two-loop (order p{sup 6}) contributions, we get L{sub 10}{sup r}(M{sub {rho}})=-(4.06{+-}0.39)x10{sup -3} and C{s…

V-us and m(s) from hadronic tau decays

2006

Recent progress in the determination of |V_us| employing strange hadronic tau-decay data are reported. This includes using the recent OPAL update of the strange spectral function, as well as augmenting the dimension-two perturbative contribution with the recently calculated order alpha_s^3 term on the theory side. These updates result in |V_us| = 0.2220 +- 0.0033, with the uncertainty presently being dominated by experiment, and already being competitive with the standard extraction from K_e3 decays and other new proposals to determine |V_us|. In view of the ongoing work to analyse tau-decay data at the B-factories BaBar and Belle, as well as future results from BESIII, the error on |V_us| …

One-loop calculation of the oblique S parameter in higgsless electroweak models

2012

We present a one-loop calculation of the oblique S parameter within Higgsless models of electroweak symmetry breaking and analyze the phenomenological implications of the available electroweak precision data. We use the most general effective Lagrangian with at most two derivatives, implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R -> SU(2)_{L+R} with Goldstones, gauge bosons and one multiplet of vector and axial-vector massive resonance states. Using the dispersive representation of Peskin and Takeuchi and imposing the short-distance constraints dictated by the operator product expansion, we obtain S at the NLO in terms of a few resonance parameters. In asymptotically-free gauge …

Updated determination of αs(mτ2) from τ decays

2016

Using the most recent release of the ALEPH [Formula: see text] decay data, we present a very detailed phenomenological update of the [Formula: see text] determination. We have exploited the sensitivity to the strong coupling in many different ways, exploring several complementary methodologies. All determinations turn out to be in excellent agreement, allowing us to extract a very reliable value of the strong coupling. We find [Formula: see text] which implies [Formula: see text]. We critically revise previous work, and point out the problems flawing some recent analyses which claim slightly smaller values.

Precision physics with QCD

2016

The four-loop determination of the strong coupling from fully inclusive observables is reviewed. Special attention is given to the low-energy measurement extracted from the hadronic $\tau$ decay width. A recent exhaustive analysis of the ALEPH data, exploring several complementary methodologies with very different sensitivities to inverse power corrections and duality violations, confirms the strong suppression of non-perturbative contributions to $R_\tau$. It gives the value $\alpha_s(m_\tau^2)= 0.328 \pm 0.013$, which implies $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)= 0.1197 \pm 0.0015$. The excellent agreement with the direct measurement at the $Z$ peak, $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)= 0.1196 \pm 0.0030$, provides a beautiful…

Sensitivity to charged scalars in $B\to D^{(*)}\tau\nu_\tau$ and $B\to\tau\nu_\tau$ decays

2012

Viability of light-Higgs strongly-coupled scenarios

2013

Contrary to what is sometimes stated, the current electroweak precision data easily allow for massive composite resonance states at the natural EW scale, i.e., well over the TeV. The oblique parameters S and T are analyzed by means of an effective Lagrangian that implements the $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R\to SU(2)_{L+R}$ pattern of electroweak symmetry breaking. They are computed at the one-loop level and incorporating the newly discovered Higgs-like boson and possible spin-1 composite resonances. Imposing a proper ultraviolet behaviour is crucial and allows us to determine S and T at next-to-leading order in terms of a few resonance parameters. Electroweak precision data force the vector and a…

Strongly Coupled Models with a Higgs-like Boson

2013

Considering the one-loop calculation of the oblique S and T parameters, we have presented a study of the viability of strongly-coupled scenarios of electroweak symmetry breaking with a light Higgs-like boson. The calculation has been done by using an effective Lagrangian, being short-distance constraints and dispersive relations the main ingredients of the estimation. Contrary to a widely spread believe, we have demonstrated that strongly coupled electroweak models with massive resonances are not in conflict with experimental constraints on these parameters and the recently observed Higgs-like resonance. So there is room for these models, but they are stringently constrained. The vector and…

LHC bounds on colored scalars

2019

We analyze the constraints on coloured scalar bosons imposed by the current LHC data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Specifically, we consider an additional electroweak doublet of colour-octet scalars, satisfying the principle of Minimal Flavour Violation in order to fulfill the stringent experimental limits on flavour-changing neutral currents. We demonstrate that coloured scalars with masses below 800 GeV are already excluded, provided they are not fermiophobic.

Vusandmsfrom HadronicτDecays

2005

Recent experimental results on hadronic $\ensuremath{\tau}$ decays into strange particles by the OPAL Collaboration are employed to determine ${V}_{us}$ and ${m}_{s}$ from moments of the invariant mass distribution. Our results are ${V}_{us}=0.2208\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0034$ and ${m}_{s}(2\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V})=81\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}22\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{M}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$. The error on ${V}_{us}$ is dominated by experiment and should be improvable in the future. Nevertheless, already now our result is competitive with the standard extraction of ${V}_{us}$ from ${K}_{e3}$ decays, and it is compatible with unitarity.

Abstract We analyze the 〈 V A P 〉 three-point function of vector, axial-vector and pseudoscalar currents. In the spirit of large N C , a resonance dominated Green function is confronted with the leading high-energy behaviour from the operator product expansion. The matching is shown to be fully compatible with a chiral resonance Lagrangian and it allows to determine some of the chiral low-energy constants of O ( p 6 ) .

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and the Higgs Boson

2015

The first LHC run has confirmed the Standard Model as the correct theory at the electroweak scale, and the existence of a Higgs-like particle associated with the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak gauge symmetry. These lectures overview the present knowledge on the Higgs boson and discuss alternative scenarios of electroweak symmetry breaking which are already being constrained by the experimental data.
