2021

The Massif central owns a large number of fortifications and height sites occupied between the Late Bronze Age IIIb and the beginning of earlyLa Tène. The rate of foundation and abandonment of these settlements corresponds perfectly to that observed in the rest of France with twomain phases of operation which correspond to the Final Bronze IIIb and the Final Hallstatt. Several ramparts have been excavated in recent yearsand confirm that this region is at the crossroads of both Mediterranean and continental influences in terms of defensive architecture. While someextensive excavations have made it possible to understand the status or function of these settlements, this aspect of the research…

2021

A review of current knowledge is proposed based on updated data for 1330 fortified sites on high ground. These, for the most part, have been explored on too limited an area to understand their precise nature and status. Generally, they are located on spurs and cover a very small area, particularly in the Southeast. Only a quarter of them exceed 7 ha. The size of the fortifications is also an essential criteria, but it was only possible to address it from one clue – the length: the range of disparities are very wide there also; but, we note that this length doubles on average at the end of the Iron Age. The materials of the ramparts reveal trends: earth dominates in the northwest half, stone…

Between internal Gaul and Roman province of Transalpine, fortified places of the high Loire valley at the end of the Iron Age

2019

During the first century BC AD, the south-east of the Massif central has the particularity of positioning itself at the interface of two major culturalentities, internal Gaul and the Roman province of Transalpine. The upper course of the river Loire is therefore a major axis of interaction betweenthese two systems, around which develops a network of habitats and structured agglomerations among which are inserted fortified spaces withconfigurations and functions varied.

Forteresse de Polignac (Polignac, Haute-Loire). La Seigneurie, étude de bâti et sondages

2008
