In order to warrant the sustainability of migratory fish in the Rhone and Mediterranean area, two policies have been developed. The first one, concerning shads, has already made possible to pass the first three locks and several weirs on the tributaries. Symmetrically, a concerted restoration plan has been elaborated for the restoration of eels populations. Its main objective consists of making resettlement of their habitat, fully performing their ecologically regulating role, and satisfying social and economic requirements. The role of scientists appears to be major, for diagnosing and assessing the ecological justification of the actions, their technical viability (esp. of stocking), and the economic viability of this program.
