The article is dedicated to the issue of nineteenth-century inns and alcohol abuse in Silesia of the time. It contains data on the legislative efforts o f the Prussian authorities to solve the problem of alcoholism , and also describes the history o f social sobriety movements inspired by the Catholic Church. Using the historical documentation contained in the court protocols from the Strzelce County, examined was the actual freąuency o f cases in which alkohol played a role. The conclusion transpired that administrative bans issued by the Prussian authorities and the efforts o f the Catholic Church could have been effective. Brawls and fights caused by the abuse of alcohol are relatively rarely represented in the protocols o f the secondo half of the nineteenth century.
