Se risulta impossibile pensare che un cannolo preparato a Palermo sia anche soltanto simile a uno americano o svedese (sic), tutte queste versioni hanno qualcosa in comune. Come nei miti studiati da Lévi-Strauss, tanto più evidente è il tradimento di ogni traduzione quanto più chiara risulta la presenza di una struttura comune, una dimensione profonda a cui non possiamo non imputare questa straordinaria efficacia. Quello che faremo in questo saggio sarà allora utilizzare i dolci siciliani per riflettere sui simboli, su cosa siano ma soprattutto su come si costruiscano, dunque su quel modo simbolico che è stato sempre il convitato di pietra di ogni discorso semiotico, ma anche il punto di partenza di ogni riflessione sull’identità culturale. If it is impossible to think that a cannolo prepared in Palermo is even similar to an American or Swedish one (sic), all these versions have something in common. As in the myths studied by Lévi-Strauss, the more evident is the betrayal of each translation the clearer is the presence of a common structure, a profound dimension to which we cannot but attribute this extraordinary effectiveness. What we are going to do in this essay, then, is to use Sicilian sweets to reflect on symbols, on what they are but, above all, on how they are constructed, and therefore on that symbolic mode which has always been the cornerstone of any semiotic discourse, but also the starting point of any reflection on cultural identity.
