description

The liturgy is the essence of life in every Church and every monastery. Before the Council of Trent the liturgical life was very rich. Every diocese and many orders introduced to the Roman Liturgy some specific characteristics and rites. The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre had their own liturgy called “rite of the church of the Christ’s tomb”. It was a Roman-Gallican rite originated mainly in central France, adapted to the customs of Jerusalem. The study of the liturgy of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre from Nysa allows to highlight some specific characteristics of it. As an example we can mention the rites of Mandatum and Missa Crismatis celebrated on the Holy Thursday; Missa praesanctificatorum and Depositio cruces of the Good Friday; the ceremony of the fire of Jerusalem in Holy Saturday; Visitatio sepulcri of the Easter Sunday. The characteristic of the liturgy of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre in Nysa were the numerous processions to the chapels symbolizing different places in Jerusalem linked with the redemptive events of Jesus Christ.
