Abstract The communication presents a theoretical reflection based on the fact that as educational level advances, the unemployment rate decreases. Based on this, we set out what should be the place employability should occupy in higher education. We found that the labour market demands professionals with skills related to creative imagination and innovation capabilities; and these are developed through an education that nurtures students’ curiosity and also linked to the vital concerns of learners. We need to rethink and reflect on the role teachers should play, besides mastering the theoretical knowledge of the disciplines they teach, teachers should become designers and developers of learning environments so that students improve their employability, taking into account ethical and scientific criteria. The communication concludes by arguing that caring for students as professionals implies providing an education for job satisfaction and for sustainable and equitable human development.
