description

The paper analyses the insertion into the labour market of students leaving an apprenticeship program in Burgundy. It aims at estimating the respective weight of personal factors (social characteristics, sex, age, former schooling ... ) and of the trade for which one is training, to explain the success in entering the labour market. The most important result stemming from the econometric analysis is that most of the differences in the rate of unemployment between apprenticeship trades lies in the personal characteristics of graduates. The professional speciality of apprenticeship, per se, plays only a limited role in this respect. We reach therefore the conclusion that the argument according to which the training in itself would have an inadequate technical content is not empirically valid.
