Il balaneion dell'agorà di Solunto

2019

Ettore Gabrici, who first excavated the structure located in the northwest corner of Solunto’s agora in 1920-21, identified the remains as part of a thermal bath, despite missing some of the key elements which usually characterize this type of buildings (hypocaust, praefurnium, heating pipes). After the re-examination of the architectural elements, this paper suggests a different interpretation which takes into account archaeological evidences from the broader Mediterranean context (especially from Sicily and the Punic world). The results here presented could actively contribute to a better understanding of the hydraulic engineering in Sicily during the Hellenistic Period. As a matter of fa…

Night Thermal Unmixing for the Study of Microscale Surface Urban Heat Islands with TRISHNA-Like Data

2019

International audience; Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) at the surface and canopy levels are major issues in urban planification and development. For this reason, the comprehension and quantification of the influence that the different land-uses/land-covers have on UHIs is of particular importance. In order to perform a detailed thermal characterisation of the city, measures covering the whole scenario (city and surroundings) and with a recurrent revisit are needed. In addition, a resolution of tens of meters is needed to characterise the urban heterogeneities. Spaceborne remote sensing meets the first and the second requirements but the Land Surface Temperature (LST) resolutions remain too rough…

Widening the possibilities of liquid chromatography through the use of secondary equilibria with additives and hydrophilic interaction chromatography

2019

Vaccinium Genus Berry Waxes and Oils

2019

Vaccinium is a common and widespread genus of about 450 species of shrubs or dwarf shrubs in the heath family (Ericaceae). Most of Vaccinium species produce edible berries and many berries are widely cultivated at an industrial scale, for example, bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.), lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.), and cranberries (Vaccinium oxycoccos L.). These berries are important articles in the markets of berries in Northern countries both raw, and processed. Vaccinium berries are at first valued considering high vitamin concentrations as well as high concentrations of phenolics. However, also oils and waxes (lipids) of Vacciniu…

What Counts in the Politics of Climate Change? Science, Scepticism and Emblematic Numbers

2019

Scientific data is frequently presented in climate policy in the form of targets, thresholds and other “emblematic numbers”. Emblematic numbers provide putatively accurate, easily graspable units of comparison. Their use, however, belies the complexity of climate change and scientific data and threatens to mask the political decisions that operate behind them. Those interested in disrupting policymaking are able to expose and exploit this masked politicisation. This contribution unpicks the ambiguous politics of emblematic numbers. A Qualitative Content Analysis of the 2015 NIPCC report reveals the tactics of a climate change denial organisation to target the politics behind “97%” and “95%”…

Validation and biochemical characterisation of beneficial argan oil treatment in biomass propagation for industrial active dry yeast production

2019

Abstract Biomass propagation for the production of active dry yeasts (ADY) is an economically important industrial process where cellular oxidative stress significantly limits yield and fermentative capacity in the final product. Oxidative stress affects macromolecular cell components, such as lipid and proteins, thus impairing many different cellular processes. Its detrimental effect is prevented and alleviated by complex signalling, detoxifying and protein protecting systems, which can be induced by antioxidant treatments. Here we validate the general beneficial effect of argan oil treatment in bench-top simulations of industrial yeast biomass propagation as an effective technological str…

Pricing of Digital Innovations as an Entrepreneurial Process

2019

How do entrepreneurs set a price for digital innovations they develop and market? This is an important question in current information society where digitalization is making established pricing models outdated. In this study, we focus on this issue by examining what kinds of activities and resources entrepreneurs possess when pricing digital innovations. Based on five case studies, including 37 interviews with key decision makers involved in the pricing process, we found that pricing of digital innovations can be conceptualized as an entrepreneurial process in which the pricing capabilities are developed based on the resources at hand. In this view, the pricing model is adjusted through neg…

Effect of environmental conditions on the durability of polycarbonate for the protection of cultural heritage sites.

2019

Polycarbonate is a good material for covering and protecting cultural heritage sites because of its durability, mechanical properties, and transparency. However, polycarbonate degrades under environmental weathering with a significant decrease of physical and mechanical properties and loss of transparency. In this work, the contemporary presence of ultraviolet irradiation and different temperature and moisture conditions have been taken into account to study the environmental degradation of this polymer with regard to its mechanical and optical properties. The photo-oxidation reactions cause a decrease in the molecular weight and the formation of many oxygenated species. The hydrolytic sci…

Cyclical and stochastic thermal variability affects survival and growth in brook trout

2019

Directional changes in temperature have well-documented effects on ectotherms, yet few studies have explored how increased thermal variability (a concomitant of climate change) might affect individual fitness. Using a common-garden experimental protocol, we investigated how bidirectional temperature change can affect survival and growth of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and whether the survival and growth responses differ between two populations, using four thermal-variability treatments (mean: 10 °C; range: 7–13 °C): (i) constancy; (ii) cyclical fluctuations every two days; (iii) low stochasticity (random changes every 2 days); (iv) high stochasticity (random changes daily). Developmental programming of adult haematopoiesis system

2019

The Barker hypothesis of ‘foetal origin of adult diseases’ has led to emphasize the concept of ‘developmental programming’, based on the crucial role of epigenetic factors. Accordingly, it has been demonstrated that parental adversity (before conception and during pregnancy) and foetal factors (i.e., hypoxia, malnutrition and placental insufficiency) permanently modify the physiological systems of the progeny, predisposing them to premature ageing and chronic disease during adulthood. Thus, an altered functionality of the endocrine, immune, nervous and cardiovascular systems is observed in the progeny. However, it remains to be understood whether the haematopoietic system itself also repres…

Identification of Three-Way DNA Junction Ligands through Screening of Chemical Libraries and Validation by Complementary in Vitro Assays

2019

International audience; The human genome is replete with repetitive DNA sequences that can fold into thermodynamically stable secondary structures such as hairpins and quadruplexes. Cellular enzymes exist to cope with these structures whose stable accumulation would result in DNA damage through interference with DNA transactions such as transcription and replication. Therefore, the chemical stabilization of secondary DNA structures offers an attractive way to foster DNA transaction-associated damages to trigger cell death in proliferating cancer cells. While much emphasis has been recently given to DNA quadruplexes, we focused here on three-way DNA junctions (TWJ) and report on a strategy t…

EOF-Library: Open-source Elmer FEM and OpenFOAM coupler for electromagnetics and fluid dynamics

2019

EOF-Library is a software that couples Elmer and OpenFOAM simulation packages. It enables efficient internal field interpolation and communication between the finite element and the finite volume frameworks. The coupling of the two packages is based on the Message Passing Interface, which results in low latency, high data bandwidth and parallel scalability. Potential applications are magnetohydrodynamics, convective cooling of electrical devices, industrial plasma physics and microwave heating. In this work we introduce the software and perform interpolation accuracy and parallel scaling tests by sending a known scalar distribution between the two codes. To Calculate or To Follow Others : How Do Information Security Managers Make Investment Decisions?

2019

Economic models of information security investment suggest estimating cost and benefit to make an information security investment decision. However, the intangible nature of information security investment prevents managers from applying costbenefit analysis in practice. Instead, information security managers may follow experts’ recommendations or the practices of other organizations. The present paper examines factors that influence information security managers’ investment decisions from the reputational herding perspective. The study was conducted using survey questionnaire data collected from 106 organizations in Finland. The findings of the study reveal that the ability and reputation …

Anatomy of nerves of the lower extremities in the context of the treatment for varicose veins

2019

Injury of nerves of the lower extremity is the most prevalent complication associated with invasive treatment of varicose veins. These adverse events are particularly frequent after traditional surgical stripping and thermal ablative procedures. The most frequently injured nerves comprise the saphenous nerve, the sural nerve, and the anterior cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve. The high rate of injury to these nerves is primarily related to their close anatomical relationship with major trunks of the superficial venous system. The great saphenous vein is accompanied by two groups of sensory nerves. In its proximal part it runs along the anterior cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve. In …
