The dominant understanding of trauma as an epistemological crisis that can be mimetically passed on to readers has in the twenty-first century been criticized for its apolitical and ahistorical orientations. As a way to assess this criticism, this article examines trauma and storytelling in Betty Louise Bell’s Faces in the Moon (1994), a novel which places the trauma of sexual violence in a broader context of settler colonialism. The record of historical seismicity of Catania (Southern Italy) and its neighbourhood during the first millennium AD is largely incomplete due to the scarcity of sources reporting information on earthquake damage, whereas on the contrary numerous historical sources provide plentiful description of past Etnean eruptions affecting the Catania area. This study provides new insights on the Catania seismic history, which was struck by large earthquakes during its recent history (e.g. 1169, 1542, 1693, 1818 earthquakes). The access test is the most used tool to evaluate the initial preparation of an italian student before enrolling at the university. Although the necessity to select the most deserving students seem unquestionably reasonable, we have to wonder if it appears to be a good predictor of university performance. In order to answer this question, the university careers of the students enrolled at two Degree Courses at the University of Palermo (academic year 2013/2014) were analysed. The very aim of this paper is to propose a graphical tool, the Student Efficiency Nomogram, that shows the access test scores together with the first-year performance of the student.
