Oxidative stress and innate immunity responses in cigarette smoke stimulated nasal epithelial cells

Cigarette smoke extracts (CSE) may play a significant role in diseases of the upper airway including chronic rhinosinusitis. Even short term exposure of cigarette smoke has adverse effects on mitochondrial functions and redox homeostasis in tissues which may progress to further complications associated with chronic smoking. Cigarette smoke alters toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) expression and activation in bronchial epithelial cells. Carbocysteine is an anti-oxidant and mucolytic agent. The effects of carbocysteine on CSE induced oxidative stress and on associated innate immune and inflammatory responses in nasal epithelial cells are largely unknown. The relationship between asthma and allergic rhinitis: exploring the basis for a common pathophysiology

Summary Most patients with asthma also have rhinitis, and the same inflammatory cells and mechanisms are present in bronchial and nasal mucosa, thus leading to the concept of ‘one airway, one disease’. This concept is further substantiated by evidence of nasal inflammation in asthma, and bronchial inflammation and hyperresponsiveness in rhinitis. Endobronchial allergen challenge induces nasal and bronchial symptoms as well as reductions in pulmonary function and nasal patency. Likewise, treating rhinitis can improve the symptoms of asthma. The article discusses the theoretical system that supports design themes and processes of recycling large urban road infrastructures, referring to an international research that frames them among the sustainable regeneration processes of the contemporary city, and further evoking the project for the transformation of Palermo's ring road that has been elaborated within this research. L’articolo facendo riferimento ad una ricerca internazionale orientata a definire temi e processi progettuali per il riciclo delle grandi infrastrutture viarie urbane fra i processi di rigenerazione sostenibile della città contemporanea discute il complesso sistema teorico che li orienta anche in rapporto al progetto di trasformazione della circonvallazione di Palermo elaborato in tale ambito. Testimoni di stagioni urbane passate queste infrastrutture possiedono una morfologia peculiare che merita di essere mantenuta mentre devono emanciparsi dall’asfalto e adeguarsi alle nuove mobilità urbane. Ibridando vegetale e costruito come mai prima i più lunghi tracciati viari dei nostri contesti urbani potranno trasformare i loro bordi in nuovi boschi urbani o foreste lineari contrastando le isole di calore e supportando nuovi habitat interspecisti.
