2022

Development of a nanostructured sensor for monitoring oxidative stress in living cells

2018

Oxidative burden is elevated in the lung of COPD patients and is associated with aging and chronic inflammation. When overcoming physiological levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause cell damage and sustain inflammation. Both lung epithelium and alveolar macrophages contribute to ROS generation. Currently, ROS generation is measured using fluorescent probes and colorimetric/fluorimetric assays. We present an amperometric nanostructured sensor for real-time detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) released by living cells. The H2O2 sensing performance was evaluated through the current vs time response of platinum rod at a working potential of −0.45 V vs saturated calomel electrode acting as…

2018

The essay explores the reception of Rossini’s Italian operas in the writings of Étienne-Jean Delécluze. A leading figure in the Parisian cultural milieu of his time, Delécluze reviewed performances at the Théâtre Italien for the influential «Journal des débats» between 1832 and 1863. He developed an interpretative frame based on the idea that the Théâtre-Italien should function as as a “school of singing” for Paris, and identified Rossini’s operas as canonical texts that such a school should preserve and promote, in opposition to more recent trends originating from Italy. The breakdown of this cultural project, which had met with some significant public support, is probably linked to the st…

Moisture absorption, thermal conductivity and noise mitigation of clay based plasters: The influence of mineralogical and textural characteristics

2016

Abstract Three pre-mixed clay based plasters successfully employed in green building practices in several European countries (Spain, France, Germany, and United Kingdom), mainly used for interior wall coating and finishing, were tested in this paper. Their compositional and textural characteristics as well as plastic behaviour were investigated through a multi-analytical approach in a previous paper. A natural earth (Terra Rossa red soil sampled in north-western Sicily), theoretically appropriate for the production of earthen plaster, was also subjected to the same analytical routine and compared with the three commercially available products. Humidity control capacity by the determination …

Unravelling textural heterogeneity in obsidian:shear-induced outgassing in the Rocche Rosse flow

2016

Obsidian flow emplacement is a complex and understudied aspect of silicic volcanism. Of particular importance is the question of how highly viscous magma can lose sufficient gas in order to erupt effusively as a lava flow. Using an array of methods we study the extreme textural heterogeneity of the Rocche Rosse obsidian flow in Lipari, a 2. km long, 100. m thick, ~. 800. year old lava flow, with respect to outgassing and emplacement mechanisms. 2D and 3D vesicle analyses and density measurements are used to classify the lava into four textural types: 'glassy' obsidian (<. 15% vesicles), 'pumiceous' lava (>. 40% vesicles), high aspect ratio, 'shear banded' lava (20-40% vesicles) and lo…

Could the acid-base status of Antarctic sea urchins indicate a better-than-expected resilience to near-future ocean acidification?

2015

Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration alters the chemistry of the oceans towards more acidic conditions. Polar oceans are particularly affected due to their low temperature, low carbonate content and mixing patterns, for instance upwellings. Calcifying organisms are expected to be highly impacted by the decrease in the oceans' pH and carbonate ions concentration. In particular, sea urchins, members of the phylum Echinodermata, are hypothesized to be at risk due to their high-magnesium calcite skeleton. However, tolerance to ocean acidification in metazoans is first linked to acid-base regulation capacities of the extracellular fluids. No information on this is available to dat…

PERANAN GELOMBANG PANJANG TERHADAP SIRKULASI ARUS GLOBAL

2008

The global surface current system forms a large scala current circulation pattern known as gyra, which occurs in the Pasific, Hindia, and Atlantic oceans. At the nothern equator, the gyra circulation is counterclockwise, while it is anti counterclockwise at the southern equator. The trade wind crossing the Equatorial ocean causes a different slope and influences the slope form. The response of the sea level slope can be only described by the sea level pertubation concept that the disturbance moves as pulse wave which travel alongside equatorial ocean. The effects of the Rossby and Kelvin waves propagation on the ocean circulation depend on the lattitude. At the middle and high lattitudes, t…

A Discussion on the Future of Democracy with Pierre Rosanvallon

2017

Rosanvallon is amongst the many that legitimately moves criticisms against the transformations which have affected democratic western societies in recent decades. His analyses are broad on a historical-descriptive level as much as on a suggestive one, therefore this contribution of mine will focus on some theoretical key aspects which are inspired by his latest publication, but also, when required, contextualising the latter on the trail of his previous works.
