Lie Algebras Generated by Extremal Elements

We study Lie algebras generated by extremal elements (i.e., elements spanning inner ideals of L) over a field of characteristic distinct from 2. We prove that any Lie algebra generated by a finite number of extremal elements is finite dimensional. The minimal number of extremal generators for the Lie algebras of type An, Bn (n&gt;2), Cn (n&gt;1), Dn (n&gt;3), En (n=6,7,8), F4 and G2 are shown to be n+1, n+1, 2n, n, 5, 5, and 4 in the respective cases. These results are related to group theoretic ones for the corresponding Chevalley groups.

La fortificación del Reino de Valencia en la década de1640 a la luz de la revolución militar

This article proposes a study of the traditions in defensive architecture that concurred in the projects designed by Spanish military engineers for the fortification of the Valencian frontier in 1648 and 1649, in the context of the War of Catalonia (1640-1652). For this it is essential to follow the route of the Valencian adaptations to the military revolution in the matter of fortifications throughout the sixteenth century and compare them with those brought to Valencia in 1641 by the Marquis of Leganes and his engineers from the school of Milan.

International audience; L’esclavage a été aboli définitivement en France en 1848, soit plus d’un demi-siècle après la Déclaration des droits de l’homme et du citoyen de 1789, par décrets du Gouvernement provisoire de la IIème République naissante. En effet, le principe de l’abolition immédiate est proclamé dès le 4 mars 1848 par un décret rédigé par Victor Schœlcher rentré en France seulement la veille. Afin de préparer les mesures nécessaires pour en assurer son application, une Commission d’abolition présidée par Schœlcher est instituée.
