Synthesis of Functional Inorganic−Organic Hybrid Polymers Based on Poly(silsesquioxanes) and Their Thin Film Properties
2008
New stable and adherent coating materials have been synthesized on the basis of inorganic/organic hybrid polymers. As the inorganic part, different poly(silsesquioxanes) (PSSQ) have been functionalized to act as polymeric chain transfer agents (CTAs) for a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, thereby determining the starting point of a controlled radical polymerization of vinyl-type monomers. Using two different CTAs acrylates, we have successfully polymerized methacrylates and styrene under RAFT polymerization conditions. Different monomers were copolymerized in such an organic block to incorporate multiple functionalities. The variation of the block ratios and …
Amphiphilic poly(ether urethanes) carrying associative terpyridine side groups with controlled spacing
2021
The rational design of transiently crosslinked polymer gels requires a profound understanding of how molecular and topological factors determine the mechanical and dynamic material properties. To refine so-far established structure–property relations, complementary and versatile model sytems are still a crucial prerequisiste. In this study, the synthesis of a metallo-supramolecular associating terpyridine-diol (referred to as sticker) and its incorporation into poly(ethylene glycol) (pEG) based polyurethanes (PU) with strictly alternating vs. random sequences and variable sticker spacings is described. Synergetic effects resulting from the proximity of multiple neighboring urethane and stic…
Antibacterial chitosan-based blends with ethylene–vinyl alcohol copolymer
2010
Abstract This study reports for the first time about the formulation, morphology, water barrier and the antimicrobial activity of high and low molecular weight chitosonium-acetate based solvent-cast blends with ethylene–vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymers. The blends based on the low molecular weight chitosan grade showed enhanced phase morphology, transparency, enhanced water barrier properties, up to 86% water permeability reduction compared to pure chitosonium-acetate films, as well as excellent antimicrobial activity. When the fraction of low molecular weight chitosan exceeded the phase inversion in the blend, phase segregation became noticeable but good interfacial adhesion was still obser…
Synthesis of polyvinyl acetate-graft-poly-2-oxazolines
1994
Poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl chloroformate) (1) was synthesized via phosgenation of poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol). It was shown that (1) is capable of initiating the polymerization of 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline and 2-methyl-2-oxazoline, when the counter ion is exchanged using potassium iodide. Polyvinyl acetate-graft-poly-2-phenyl-2-oxazoline and polyvinyl acetate-graft-poly-2-methyl-2-oxazoline are obtained in the grafting reaction.
Synthesis and large scale fractionation of non-linear polymers: brushes and hyperbranched polymers
2002
Polymer brushes with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) backbone and polystyrene side chains were synthesized by radical polymerization of ω-methacryloyl-polystyrene macromonomers. Hyperbranched PMMA was obtained by means of self-condensing group transfer copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with an initiator-monomer containing a polymerizable methacryloyl moiety and an initiating silylketeneacetal function. Both non-linear products were fractionated using the method of continuous polymer fractionation, consisting in a particular type of continuous countercurrent extraction. The combination of methyl ethyl ketone (solvent) with acetone (AC) (precipitant) turned out to be suitable for the f…
Biological evaluation of PLLA membranes, with different pore diameters, to stimulate cell adhesion and growth in vitro
2015
Polymeric membranes prepared via DIPS (Diffusion Induced Phase Separation) are widely studied and utilized as scaffolds for the regeneration of tissue. In this work, poly (L)-lactide membrane are prepared through a DIPS protocol starting from a ternary solution made of polymer, dioxane (solvent) and water (non-solvent). A three-dimensional, porous and mechanically stable membrane is desirable for ingrowth of human bronchial epithelial cells. Polymeric membranes prepared via DIPS (Diffusion Induced Phase Separation) are widely studied and utilized as scaffolds for the regeneration of tissue. In this work, poly (L)-lactide membrane are prepared through a DIPS protocol starting from a ternary …
The Nucleating Effect of a Semiflexible Liquid-Crystalline Polymer for the Crystallization of Poly(Phenylene Sulfide)
1995
Abstract Blends of poly(phenylene sulfide) and a semiflexible liquid-crystalline polymer have been prepared, in the whole range of concentration, by melt mixing. The effect of the LCP phase on the crystallization of PPS has been studied by non-isothermal and isothermal calorimetry. It has been found that the addition of only 2-5% LCP into PPS strongly increases the crystallization rate of the latter polymer. This effect has been interpreted as the result of an increased nucleation density. The morphology of the blends, studied by scanning electron microscopy, has shown that the two polymers are incompatible, although the phase dispersion is good. Under elongational flow, the dispersed phase…
Thermo- and light responsive micellation of azobenzene containing block copolymers
2010
In this communication, the synthesis and characterization of thermo- and light responsive block copolymers is reported. PEO-b-PNIPAM polymers with azobenzene moieties were prepared and analyzed by turbidimetry, fluorescence, NMR and DLS measurements. A temperature controlled reversible formation as well as a light induced disruption and reformation of micellar structures in water was found.
Crystallization kinetics of LDPE/Ny6 blends
1988
The crystallization behaviour of low density polyethylene/nylon 6 blends has been investigated as a function of the composition. The melting points of the polymers are almost uninfluenced by the presence of the other homopolymers except for blends with a nylon content of 75–90%. Blends with 10% nylon content do not exhibit the crystallization peak during the cooling step probably because of the low concentration and high viscosity of the low density polyethylene matrix. The crystallinity degree of the polyethylene is independent of the composition, while some variations are shown by the polyamide. Finally the rate of nucleation is strongly affected by the composition, in particular for the …
Enhancement of metallo-supramolecular dissociation kinetics in telechelic terpyridine-capped poly(ethylene glycol) assemblies in the semi-dilute regi…
2019
The dynamics of supramolecular polymer assemblies is governed by that of their polymeric building blocks and that of the transient bonds between them. Entrapment of such bonds by topological crowding often causes renormalization of the bond lifetimes towards prolonging. In the present study, by contrast, we show that this effect can also be inverse in the case of telechelic metallo-supramolecular polymers in semi-dilute solution. We focus on linear poly(ethylene glycols) capped by terpyridine binding motifs at both ends that can form metal–ligand coordinative bonds with various transition metal ions, thereby creating transient metallo-supramolecular assemblies of varying length and binding …
