Abstract In this study, we report the molecular cloning of a novel Drosophila melanogaster small heat-shock (HS)-homologous gene, l(2)efl, identified on the right arm of the second chromosome at locus 59F4,5. We describe the temporal expression of l(2)efl in the wild-type and present its structure. The deduced amino-acid sequence of the Efl protein shows significant homology to all known small HS proteins identified in Drosophila and vertebrates, and to mammalian α-crystallin.

Background In the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of non‐aggressive basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), 5‐aminolevulinic acid nanoemulsion (BF‐200ALA) has shown non‐inferior efficacy when compared with methyl aminolevulinate (MAL), a widely used photosensitizer. Hexyl aminolevulinate (HAL) is an interesting alternative photosensitizer. To our knowledge, this is the first study using HAL‐PDT in the treatment of BCCs. Abstract Background: The capsid protein subunits of small RNA bacteriophages form a T=3 particle upon assembly and RNA encapsidation. Dimers of the capsid protein repress translation of the replicase gene product by binding to the ribosome binding site and this interaction is believed to initiate RNA encapsidation. The human lgl gene, Hugl-2 (llgl2, Lgl2), codes for a cytoskeletal protein involved in regulating cell polarity. Here, we report the identification and functional characterization of the promoter region ( approximately 1.2kb) of the Hugl-2 gene. Luciferase expression assays show a high basal Hugl-2 promoter activity in different cell lines and primary human hepatocytes. Truncations of the promoter identified a GC-rich region important for this activity. Alignment of human and mouse genomic sequences demonstrate that this is an evolutionary conserved region fcontaining putative binding sites for several transcription factors including Elk-1 and Sp-1. N(ε)-trimethyllysine (TML) is a non-protein amino acid which takes part in the biosynthesis of carnitine. In mammals, the breakdown of endogenous proteins containing TML residues is recognized as starting point for the carnitine biosynthesis. Here, we document that one of the main sources of TML could be the vegetables which represent an important part of daily alimentation for most mammals. A HPLC-ESI-MS/MS method, which we previously developed for the analysis of N(G)-methylarginines, was utilized to quantitate TML in numerous vegetables. The product formed, bio-silica, constitutes their inorganic matrix. It remained unexplored which reactions are involved in molding of the amorphous bio-silica and formation of a solid and rigid biomaterial. Abstract Motivation: The evolution of protein sequences can be described by a stepwise process, where each step involves changes of a few amino acids. In a similar manner, the evolution of protein folds can be at least partially described by an analogous process, where each step involves comparatively simple changes affecting few secondary structure elements. A number of such evolution steps, justified by biologically confirmed examples, have previously been proposed by other researchers. Abstract Individual stereoisomers of the phosphinic pseudodipeptide hPheψ[P(O)(OH)CH2]Phe were obtained by stereoselective liquid chromatographic separation as N- and C-terminally protected derivative on quinidine carbamate modified silica stationary phase. The stereoisomeric purity, exceeding 95% for each fraction, was determined before and after deprotection using two independent methods. Abstract In this work composite polymeric films or sponges, based on hyaluronic acid (HA) covalently crosslinked with α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)(2-aminoethylcarbamate)- d , l -aspartamide (PE), have been prepared and characterized as local gene delivery systems. In particular, HA/PE scaffolds have been loaded with PE/DNA interpolyelectrolyte complexes, employing PE as a macromolecular crosslinker for HA and as a non-viral vector for DNA. The modified nucleoside U*, located in the first position of the anticodon of yeast, chicken liver and bovine liver tRNA(Pro) (anticodon U*GG), has been determined by means of TLC, HPLC, ultraviolet spectrum and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The structure was established as 5-carbamoylmethyluridine (ncm5U). In addition, we report on the primary structures of the above-mentioned tRNAs as well as those which have the IGG anticodon.
