Wastewater-Based Epidemiology as a Tool to Detect SARS-CoV-2 Circulation at the Community Level: Findings from a One-Year Wastewater Investigation Co…

2023

Wastewater-based epidemiology is a well-established tool for detecting and monitoring the spread of enteric pathogens and the use of illegal drugs in communities in real time. Since only a few studies in Italy have investigated the correlation between SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and the prevalence of COVID-19 cases from clinical testing, we conducted a one-year wastewater surveillance study in Sicily to correlate the load of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater and the reported cumulative prevalence of COVID-19 in 14 cities from October 2021 to September 2022. Furthermore, we investigated the role of SARS-CoV-2 variants and subvariants in the increase in the number of SARS CoV-2 infections. Our findin…

Vitamin D Deficiency in HIV Infection: Not Only a Bone Disorder

2015

Hypovitaminosis D is a worldwide disorder, with a high prevalence in the general population of both Western and developing countries. In HIV patients, several studies have linked vitamin D status with bone disease, neurocognitive impairment, depression, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, infections, autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes mellitus, and cancer. In this review, we focus on the most recent epidemiological and experimental data dealing with the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and HIV infection. We analysed the extent of the problem, pathogenic mechanisms, clinical implications, and potential benefits of vitamin …

STATO NUTRIZIONALE E ABITUDINI ALIMENTARI NELLA POPOLAZIONE SICILIANA ULTRASESSANTACINQUENNE. SISTEMA DI SORVEGLIANZA PASSI D’ARGENTO

2015

The PROVIDE Traning Courses for proximity violence' professionals

2020

The chapter describes a prototype of training course for "Expert operators in proximity violence" focusing on asylum-seeking migrant women victims of violence and implemented in three European States. In particular it defines: the rationale of training by modules in adapting individual abilities of professionals of migrazion field to the professional goals to be achieved (1), the methodological implementation of the PROVIDE courses (2) and the significance of the experiential seminars conducted (3).

On Theodor Adorno

2016

I have never fully bought (albeit often tempted to) into the simplistic and somewhat caricaturist versions of Theodor Adorno’s ideas about the cultural industry and the alienated consumer given by some supporters of the “active” audience. Even more so today, when digital social media seem to make participatory culture, creativity and active citizenship a dream coming true. I have always thought instead that, beyond the traps of binary thinking (powerful media vs active audience), there is a much more complex story to be told and that we, as cultural analysts and media literacy educators, need to patiently reconstruct – with all possible evidence coming from empirical data – the intricacy of…

Recollimation shocks in relativistic jets

2018

Recollimation shocks (RS) appear associated with relativistic flows propagating through pressure mismatched atmospheres. Astrophysical scenarios invoking the presence of such shocks include jets from AGNs and X-ray binaries and GRBs. We shall start reviewing the theoretical background behind the structure of RS in overpressured jets. Next, basing on numerical simulations, we will focus on the properties of RS in relativistic steady jets threaded by helical magnetic fields depending on the dominant type of energy. Synthetic radio maps from the simulation of the synchrotron emission for a selection of models in the context of parsec-scale extragalactic jets will also be discussed.© 2018 World…

High affinity iron-uptake systems in Vibrio damsela: role in the acquisition of iron from transferrin

1997

In this work, the high affinity iron-acquisition systems displayed by virulent and avirulent strains of Vibrio damsela have been investigated. This species is an autochthonous member of marine ecosystems that can behave as an opportunistic pathogen for fish and mammals. All strains tested (i) were able to grow under the restricted conditions imposed by the iron chelators transferrin (Tf) and EDDHA, (ii) secreted siderophores of hydroxamic type, other than aerobactin and desferal, that were able to stimulate the growth of the auxotroph mutant Arthrobacter flavescens JG9, and (iii) expressed common iron-regulated outer membrane proteins (IROMPs). No change in LPS patterns was observed in resp…

Iron-binding compounds and related outer membrane proteins in Vibrio cholerae non-O1 strains from aquatic environments

1990

A total of 156 strains of Vibrio cholerae non-O1 from aquatic origins were examined for the presence of iron uptake mechanisms and compared with O1 strains and other Vibrio species. All non-O1 strains were able to grow in iron-limiting conditions, with MICs of ethylenediaminedi (O-hydroxyphenylacetic acid) ranging from 20 microM to 2 mM. The production of siderophores was demonstrated by growth in chrome azurol S agar and cross-feeding assays. All strains produced phenolate-type compounds, as assessed by the chemical tests and by bioassays with Salmonella typhimurium enb-7. Some of the strains also promoted the growth of S. typhimurium enb-1 (which can use only enterobactin as a siderophore…

Synergistic integration of optical and microwave satellite data for crop yield estimation

2019

Developing accurate models of crop stress, phenology and productivity is of paramount importance, given the increasing need of food. Earth observation (EO) remote sensing data provides a unique source of information to monitor crops in a temporally resolved and spatially explicit way. In this study, we propose the combination of multisensor (optical and microwave) remote sensing data for crop yield estimation and forecasting using two novel approaches. We first propose the lag between Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) derived from MODIS and Vegetation Optical Depth (VOD) derived from SMAP as a new joint metric combining the information from the two satellite sensors in a unique feature or des…
