On the spectrum of linear combinations of two projections inC*-algebras

In this note, we study the spectrum and give estimations for the spectral radius of linear combinations of two projections in C*-algebras. We also study the commutator of two projections.

Lifting paths on quotient spaces

Abstract Let X be a compactum and G an upper semi-continuous decomposition of X such that each element of G is the continuous image of an ordered compactum. If the quotient space X / G is the continuous image of an ordered compactum, under what conditions is X also the continuous image of an ordered compactum? Examples around the (non-metric) Hahn–Mazurkiewicz Theorem show that one must place severe conditions on G if one wishes to obtain positive results. We prove that the compactum X is the image of an ordered compactum when each g ∈ G has 0-dimensional boundary. We also consider the case when G has only countably many non-degenerate elements. Improved Constructions of Quantum Automata

We present a simple construction of quantum automata which achieve an exponential advantage over classical finite automata. Our automata use $\frac{4}{\epsilon} \log 2p + O(1)$ states to recognize a language that requires p states classically. The construction is both substantially simpler and achieves a better constant in the front of logp than the previously known construction of [2]. Similarly to [2], our construction is by a probabilistic argument. We consider the possibility to derandomize it and present some preliminary results in this direction.

When can an equational simple graph be generated by hyperedge replacement?

Infinite hypergraphs with sources arise as the canonical solutions of certain systems of recursive equations written with operations on hypergraphs. There are basically two different sets of such operations known from the literature, HR and VR. VR is strictly more powerful than HR on simple hypergraphs. Necessary conditions are known ensuring that a VR-equational simple hypergraph is also HR-equational. We prove that two of them, namely having finite tree-width or not containing the infinite bipartite graph, are also sufficient. This shows that equational hypergraphs behave like context-free sets of finite hypergraphs.

POLYNOMIAL GROWTH OF THE*-CODIMENSIONS AND YOUNG DIAGRAMS

Let A be an algebra with involution * over a field F of characteristic zero and Id(A, *) the ideal of the free algebra with involution of *-identities of A. By means of the representation theory of the hyperoctahedral group Z 2wrS n we give a characterization of Id(A, *) in case the sequence of its *-codimensions is polynomially bounded. We also exhibit an algebra G 2 with the following distinguished property: the sequence of *-codimensions of Id(G 2, *) is not polynomially bounded but the *-codimensions of any T-ideal U properly containing Id(G 2, *) are polynomially bounded.

Product of nilpotent subgroups

We will say that a subgroup X of G satisfies property C in G if \({\rm C}_{G}(X\cap X^{{g}})\leqq X\cap X^{{g}}\) for all \({g}\in G\). We obtain that if X is a nilpotent subgroup satisfying property C in G, then XF(G) is nilpotent. As consequence it follows that if \(N\triangleleft G\) is nilpotent and X is a nilpotent subgroup of G then \(C_G(N\cap X)\leqq X\) implies that NX is nilpotent.¶We investigate the relationship between the maximal nilpotent subgroups satisfying property C and the nilpotent injectors in a finite group.

On the consequences of the standard polynomial

The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on the polynomial identities of low degree for the n × n matrix algebra over a field of characteristic 0.Our main result is that we have found all the consequences of degree n + 2 of the standard polynomial have calculated the S n+2-character of the T-ideal generated by this polynomial.

Polynomial Identities of Algebras of Small Dimension

It is well known that given an associative algebra or a Lie algebra A, its codimension sequence c n (A) is either polynomially bounded or grows at least as fast as 2 n . In [2] we proved that for a finite dimensional (in general nonassociative) algebra A, dim A = d, the sequence c n (A) is also polynomially bounded or c n (A) ≥ a n asymptotically, for some real number a > 1 which might be less than 2. Nevertheless, for d = 2, we may take a = 2. Here we prove that for d = 3 the same conclusion holds. We also construct a five-dimensional algebra A with c n (A) < 2 n .

Asymptotics for Graded Capelli Polynomials

The finite dimensional simple superalgebras play an important role in the theory of PI-algebras in characteristic zero. The main goal of this paper is to characterize the T 2-ideal of graded identities of any such algebra by considering the growth of the corresponding supervariety. We consider the T 2-ideal Γ M+1,L+1 generated by the graded Capelli polynomials C a p M+1[Y,X] and C a p L+1[Z,X] alternanting on M+1 even variables and L+1 odd variables, respectively. We prove that the graded codimensions of a simple finite dimensional superalgebra are asymptotically equal to the graded codimensions of the T 2-ideal Γ M+1,L+1, for some fixed natural numbers M and L.
