Two complex typifications and a new name to unravel Ulota germana sensu Malta non (Mont.) Mitt. (Orthotrichaceae)

2020

Ulota germana is an epiphytic moss moderately common in oceanic areas of Patagonia (southern South America), one of the regions of the world where Ulota reaches a peak of diversity. It is easily recognized by very long perichaetial leaves, which reach the capsule when wet, an endostome of eight segments and verrucose spores. In Nikolajs Malta's revision of South American Ulota, a species was described under this name with apparently similar long perichaetial leaves and spores but with a 16-segment endostome, an uncommon character in this genus. No further references to this particular combination of traits are found throughout the literature of South American Ulota. In the same work, Malta …

The politics of Argentina today: human rights and Kirchnerismo

2016

After the effects of bloody dictatorship that whipped the region, Argentina as many other Latin American countries experienced a great trauma which not only altered the ways politics was lived, but also undermined the social trust of citizens respecting to their institutions. The rise of Kirchneristes and Kirchnerismo post stock and market crisis of 2001, initiated a new age in Argentina. Kirchnerismo opened the doors for the vindication of many claims of human rights organisations, but at the same time, the discourse of human rights was adjusted to the interests of Cristina Kirchner and her followers. As a result of this, the cause of human rights allowed government to produce a new way of…

Secular trends in Dietary Inflammatory Index among adults in the United States, 1999-2014.

2018

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate secular trends in Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) scores in the United States between 1999 and 2014. Methods: Data from adults over 19 years from the 1999 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (N = 39,191) were used. DII scores, at each 2-year cycle, were evaluated from a 24-h recall, including 26 food parameters for DII calculation. Analyses were conducted in 2018. Results: For the entire sample, there was a quadratic trend (Ptrend < 0.001), with the DII scores peaking in 2003–2004, and then decreasing during the cycles from 2005 to 2014. Similar quadratic trends (Ptrend < 0.001) were observed by age, gender, …

Changing the education paradigm in oncology: ESO masterclass, 17 years of continuous success

2020

In this review, we summarize the history of the 41 Masterclasses in Clinical Oncology (MCO) organized by ESO or ESO-ESMO during the last 17 years. MCOs have been held in five different geographical regions including: a) Central Europe, b) Eastern Europe and Balkans, c) Baltic and Euroasia, d) Arab World and Southern European Countries and e) Latin America. More than 2.000 young oncologists have attended and more than 250 distinguished faculty members have actively participated. The program exposes students to sessions covering all major tumors ("big killers") and to spotlights updating information on various important cancers and related topics. Participants are able to present their own cl…

Linear-time sequence comparison using minimal absent words & applications

2016

Sequence comparison is a prerequisite to virtually all comparative genomic analyses. It is often realized by sequence alignment techniques, which are computationally expensive. This has led to increased research into alignment-free techniques, which are based on measures referring to the composition of sequences in terms of their constituent patterns. These measures, such as q-gram distance, are usually computed in time linear with respect to the length of the sequences. In this article, we focus on the complementary idea: how two sequences can be efficiently compared based on information that does not occur in the sequences. A word is an absent word of some sequence if it does not occur in…

Associations between cardiovascular disease, cancer, and very low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the REasons for Geographical and Racial Dif…

2018

AbstractAimsRelatively little is known about the health outcomes associated with very low plasma concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) mainly because of the small numbers of individuals with such extreme values included in clinical trials. We, therefore, investigated the association between low and very low HDL-C concentration at baseline and incident all-cause-mortality, death from malignant disease (i.e. cancer), and with fatal or non-fatal incident coronary heart disease (CHD) in individuals from the Reasons for Geographical And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study. Methods and resultsAnalysis was based on 21 751 participants from the REGARDS study who wer…

Association between urticaria and nematode infections

2018

Background The association between parasites and urticaria was first suggested in the last century. A wide range, 0-75.4%, of the prevalence of parasitic infection has been reported with chronic urticaria (CU). Moreover, urticaria may be detected in patients with parasitosis. Nematodes are a type of helminth that infect hundreds of millions of people throughout the world. Objective The aim of this work was to collect and review the published studies and cases of urticaria associated with nematode infections. Methods A search of scientific literature data bases from January 1960 until May 2017 was carried out. Results Numerous nematode infections have been associated with urticaria and/or an…

Component-Resolved Diagnosis of American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) Allergy in Patients From Different Geographical Areas

2021

Background:Manifestation of respiratory allergy to American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) is prominent in the subtropical and tropical areas. However, co-existing perennial indoor inhalant allergies frequently compromise clinical diagnosis of cockroach allergy, and the analysis of sensitization pattern is limited by the lack ofPeriplanetaallergens widely available for component-resolved diagnostics (CRD).Objective:To evaluate a collection of previously described recombinantPeriplanetaallergens for CRD in cockroach allergy. Methods:A panel of nine recombinantPeriplaneta allergens (Per a 1–5, 7–10) was generated, purified, and subjected to physicochemical characterization by applying circu…

Validation of the Satisfaction Questionnaire with physical education classes (CSCEF) in the Latin American context

2020

The objective of this study was to validate the Satisfaction Questionnaire in Physical Education Classes (CSCEF) in the context of Latin America (Dominican Republic). 1298 students aged between 15 and 21 participated. The psychometric properties of the instrument were analysed. The results demonstrated that the best factor solution would be a multidimensional model represented by nine dimensions for the satisfaction construct, as well as a higher-order model. According to Cronbach's alpha and omega index, values between .66 and .99 were obtained. The Latin American version of the CSCEF was invariant with respect to gender. Although the results of this study support the validity and reliabil…
