Interpretive search of optimal isocratic and gradient separations in micellar liquid chromatography in extended organic solvent domains
2020
Abstract Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) is a reversed-phase mode with mobile phases containing an organic solvent and a micellised surfactant. Most procedures developed in MLC are implemented in the isocratic mode, since the general elution problem in chromatography is less troublesome. However, gradient elution may be still useful in MLC to analyse mixtures of compounds within a wide range of polarities, in shorter times. MLC using gradients is attractive to determine by direct injection moderate to low polar compounds in physiological samples. In these analyses, the use of initial micellar conditions (isocratic or gradient) with a fixed amount of surfactant above the critical micell…
Performance of amines as silanol suppressors in reversed-phase liquid chromatography
2016
In reversed-phase liquid chromatography, cationic basic compounds yield broad and asymmetrical peaks, as a result of their ionic interaction with the anionic free silanol groups present in the silica-based stationary phases (commonly derivatised with C18 groups). A simple way to improve the peak shape is the addition to the hydro-organic mobile phase of a reagent (usually called additive) with cationic character. This associates with the stationary phase to prevent the access of analytes to the free silanol groups. Cationic additives may interact electrostatically with the anionic silanols. The hydrophobic region of the additive may also associate with the alkyl chains bound to the stationa…
Evaluation of Sialic Acid in Infant Feeding: Contents and Bioavailability
2016
Sialic acid (Sia) contents and bioaccessibility (BA) in human milk (HM) and infant formulas (IFs) were determined, and Sia intakes by infants between 0 and 6 months of age were evaluated. Total Sia contents in HM decreased during lactation from 136.14 to 24.47 mg/100 mL. The total Sia contents in IFs (13.15-25.78 mg/100 mL) were lower than in HM and were not related to the addition of ingredients acting as sources of Sia in their formulation. The Sia intakes derived from IF consumption were lower than in HM, and only one IF reached the intakes provided by HM from the age of 2 months. Despite the lower total Sia content in IFs, the BA of Sia in IFs (88.08-92.96%) was significantly greater th…
Multi-occurrence of twenty mycotoxinsin pasta and a risk assessment in the moroccan population
2018
In the present study, the multi-occurrence of twenty (20) mycotoxins in pasta samples consumed in Morocco was assessed. For this, a modified Quick, Easy, Cheap Effective, Rugged, and Safe method was validated. The mycotoxins studied were identified and quantified by liquid chromatography&ndash
Determination of four parabens and bisphenols A, F and S in human breast milk using QuEChERS and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry
2018
Abstract For the first time, a multiresidue, sensitive and high throughput method for determination of bisphenol A, F and S and 4 parabens (methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben and butyl paraben) in human breast milk was developed. The proposed method includes an extraction and clean-up procedure based on QuEChERS methodology followed by liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry determination. Negative atmospheric pressure chemical ionization in the selected reaction monitoring mode was used for mass detection. During the method validation the recoveries varied between 83 and 115% with a precision lower than 20% for all analytes using spiked levels from 0…
Determination of 21 perfluoroalkyl substances and organophosphorus compounds in breast milk by liquid chromatography coupled to orbitrap high-resolut…
2018
Abstract The human exposure to perfluoroalkyl (PFASs) and organophosphorus (OPs) compounds is a cause of concern and its determination in biological matrices, including human milk, is an emergent approach for evaluate their exposure. A comprehensive strategy for the quantitative determination of 21 PFASs and OPs compounds in breast milk was developed. The proposed method includes an extraction and clean-up procedure based on the QuEChERs methodology followed by an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) determination. The full-scan mass data were acquired with a resolution of 50000 FWHM and a mass accuracy better than 5 ppm. Met…
On-Capillary Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: Determination of Glutathione in Whole Blood Microsamples.
2018
Oxidative stress monitoring in the neonatal period supports early outcome prediction and treatment. Glutathione (GSH) is the most abundant antioxidant in most cells and tissues, including whole blood, and its usefulness as a biomarker has been known for decades. To date, the available methods for GSH determination require laborious sample processing and the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment. To the best of our knowledge, no tools suitable for point-of-care (POC) sensing have been reported. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), performed in a microvolume capillary measurement cell, is proposed in this study as a robust approach for the quantification of GSH in human whole blood…
Constraints representing a meta-stable régime facilitate exploration during practice and transfer of learning in a complex multi-articular task
2018
Previous investigations have shown that inducing meta-stability\ud in behavior can be achieved by overlapping affordances through constraint\ud manipulation, allowing cooperative and competitive tendencies to\ud functionally coexist. The purpose of this paper was to test a number of\ud conditions applying these design principles on performance during skills\ud practice and transfer. Of additional interest, was whether the existing\ud skill level interacted with the environmental properties of the\ud experimental tasks (varying indoor climbing routes). Two skill groups\ud practised on three routes per session over four separate sessions. At the\ud end of the final session, climbers undertook…
Empowering counseling--a case study: nurse-patient encounter in a hospital
2001
This study illustrates practices that a nurse uses in order to empower patients. The emphasis is on speech formulae that encourage patients to discuss their concerns and to solicit information about impending surgery. The study is a part of a larger research project and a single case was selected for presentation in this article because it differed from the rest of the data by manifesting empowering practice. A videotaped nurse-patient health counseling session was conducted in a hospital and transcribed verbatim. The investigator interviewed the nurse and the patient after the conversation, and these interviews were transcribed as well. The encounter that is presented here as a case study …
Development of a novel methodology for determination of dialkyl phosphates in human urine using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
2019
Abstract In this study a fast and sensitive method was developed for the quantitative determination of six dialkyl phosphates (DAPs) in human urine using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The proposed methodology was based on liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) with diethyl ether and ethyl acetate using MgSO4 and NaCl, followed by liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry detection in the selected reaction mode (SRM) with negative electrospray ionization (ESI-). Detection settings were optimized by design of experiments (DoE). Dibutyl phosphate (DBP) was used as internal standard. Several criteria established in the SANTE/11813/2017 guidance document for pesticide resi…
