Path to Overcome Material and Fundamental Obstacles in Spin Valves Based on MoS2 and Other Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides

The recent introduction of two-dimensional materials into magnetic tunnel junctions (2D MTJs) offers very promising properties for spintronics, such as atomically defined interfaces, spin filtering, perpendicular anisotropy, and modulation of spin-orbit torque. Nevertheless, the difficulty of integrating exfoliated 2D materials into spintronic devices has limited exploration. Here the authors find a fabrication process leading to superior performance in MTJs based on transition-metal dichalcogenides, and further suggest a path to alleviate basic issues of technology and physics for 2D MTJs.

Magnetic domain-wall racetrack memory for high density and fast data storage

The racetrack memory device is a new concept of Magnetic RAM (MRAM) based on controlling domain wall (DW) motion in ferromagnetic nanowires. It promises ultra-high storage density thanks to the possibility to store multiple narrow DWS per memory cell. By using read and write heads based on magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) fast data access speed can also be achieved. Thereby the racetrack memory can be used as universal storage to address both embedded and standalone applications. Modelling residuals dependence in dynamic life tables: A geostatistical approach

The problem of modelling dynamic mortality tables is considered. In this context, the influence of age on data graduation needs to be properly assessed through a dynamic model, as mortality progresses over the years. After detrending the raw data, the residuals dependence structure is analysed, by considering them as a realisation of a homogeneous Gaussian random field defined on R × R. We report the discovery of 1-benzyl-2-(3- fluorophenyl)-4-hydroxy-3-(3-phenylpropanoyl)-2H-pyrrole- 5-one as a novel non-ligand binding pocket (non-LBP) antagonist of the androgen receptor (AR) through the application of molecular topology techniques. This compound, validated through time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer and fluorescence polarization biological assays, provides the basis for lead optimization and structure−activity relationship analysis of a new series of non-LBP AR antagonists. Full Tunability of Strain along the fcc-bcc Bain Path in Epitaxial Films and Consequences for Magnetic Properties

Strained coherent film growth is commonly either limited to ultrathin films or low strains. Here, we present an approach to achieve high strains in thicker films, by using materials with inherent structural instabilities. As an example, 50 nm thick epitaxial films of the ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{70}{\mathrm{Pd}}_{30}$ magnetic shape memory alloy are examined. Strained coherent growth on various substrates allows us to adjust the tetragonal distortion from $c/{a}_{\mathrm{bct}}=1.09$ to 1.39, covering most of the Bain transformation path from fcc to bcc crystal structure. Membrane fluidity of stressed cells of Oenococcus oeni

International audience; The determination of membrane fluidity in whole cells of Oenococcus oeni was achieved by membrane probe 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene fluorescence anisotropy measurements. The results demonstrated instantaneous fluidity variations with cells directly stressed during the measure. Heat (42°C) or acid (pH 3.2) shocks decreased the anisotropy values (fluidising effects), whereas an ethanol shock (10% ethanol, v/v) increased the membrane rigidity. The velocities of fluidity variation with non-adapted or adapted cells (incubation in inhibitory growth conditions) were compared. Cholesterol Modulates the Interaction of β-Amyloid Peptide with Lipid Bilayers

The interaction of an amphiphilic, 40-amino acid beta-amyloid (Abeta) peptide with liposomal membranes as a function of sterol mole fraction (X(sterol)) was studied based on the fluorescence anisotropy of a site-specific membrane sterol probe, dehydroergosterol (DHE), and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the native Tyr-10 residue of Abeta to DHE. Without Abeta, peaks or kinks in the DHE anisotropy versus X(sterol) plot were detected at X(sterol) approximately 0.25, 0.33, and 0.53. Use of the Transglutaminase Reaction To Study the Dissociation of Histone N-Terminal Tails from DNA in Nucleosome Core Particles

We have recently shown that core histones are glutaminyl substrates for transglutaminase (TGase) and that when native nucleosome cores are incubated with monodansylcadaverine (DNC) as donor amine, this fluorescent probe is incorporated into Gln5 and Gln19 of H3 and in Gln22 of H2B [Ballestar et al. (1996) J. Biol. Chem. 271, 18817-18825]. In the present paper, we report that the cause by which Gln22 of H2B is modified in nucleosomes but not in the free histone is the interaction of the region containing that glutamine with DNA.
