Inclusive didactics and assistive technologies: the experience of a group of special needs teachers
2018
This paper describes the results of an exploratory survey aimed to examine the experience of a group of special needs teachers on the use of ICT in teaching to students with autism spectrum disorder. It is focused on the effectiveness of video modeling as a tool through which to learn (self-learning and imitation) specific skills in the field of personal autonomy. By sharing the thought of Rossi (2012), which has stated that "digital technologies provide to school an extraordinary opportunity to put on the agenda the issue of learning and, together with it, the professionalism of teachers", the authors handed out a questionnaire to a group of special needs teachers of a Comprehensive School…
The development of teachers’ responses to challenging situations during interaction training
2014
The qualitative changes in teachers’ responses in challenging situations were analysed during a four-day Teacher Effectiveness Training (TET) course, which aimed at improving teachers’ interpersonal dynamics with pupils, parents and colleagues. The participants were 21 teachers from one elementary and 23 teachers from one secondary school attending a TET course in Finland. Qualitative abductive content analysis was used to classify the data. Frequencies based on this analysis were also looked at. After TET the teachers described the behaviour of their pupils and expressed their feelings and the actual consequences of that behaviour, instead of using generalized labels and subjective interpr…

Koululaisten fyysisen aktiivisuuden ja liikuntatunneilla koetun autonomian muutokset 7. luokalta 9. luokalle
2010
Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli analysoida koululaisten fyysisen aktiivisuuden ja liikuntatunneilla koetun autonomian muutoksia 7. luokalta 9. luokalle. Lisäksi tutkittiin liikuntatunneilla koetun autonomian yhteyttä fyysiseen aktiivisuuteen. Tutkimuksen osanottajiksi valittiin 639 (tytöt = 296, pojat = 343) keskisuomalaista koululaista, jotka olivat tutkimuksen alkaessa seitsemäsluokkalaisia. Tutkimukseen osallistui 8 koulua ja 32 opetusryhmää. Pitkittäisaineisto kerättiin 2007–2009 viidellä mittauskerralla, jotta alakoulusta yläkouluun siirtymisen jälkeistä kehitystrendiä voitiin seurata. Mittaukset suoritettiin strukturoiduilla kyselyillä. Oppilaiden itseraportoitua fyysistä aktiivisuutta …
Zadovoljavanje osnovnih psiholoških potreba i autonomna motivacija u kontekstu škole: testiranje aditivne, sinergističke i hipoteze ravnoteže
2018
The present study examined the influence of the three basic psychological needs on autonomous motivation in educational settings in the light of additive, synergistic, and balance hypotheses. Participants were 679 high school students (Mage = 16.16, 49.3% girls). The findings supported the additive hypothesis: all three needs had unique effects on autonomous motivation. The synergistic hypothesis was only partially supported: one two-way interaction between autonomy and competence had effect on autonomous motivation. A high level of satisfaction of the need for autonomy led to autonomous motivation regardless of satisfaction of the need for competence. However, competence was positively rel…
A classification of motivation and behavior change techniques used in self-determination theory-based interventions in health contexts
2020
While evidence suggests that interventions based on self-determination theory have efficacy in motivating adoption and maintenance of health-related behaviors, and in promoting adaptive psychological outcomes, the motivational techniques that comprise the content of these interventions have not been comprehensively identified or described. The aim of the present study was to develop a classification system of the techniques that comprise self-determination theory interventions, with satisfaction of psychological needs as an organizing principle. Candidate techniques were identified through a comprehensive review of self-determination theory interventions and nomination by experts. The study…
Differential effects of perceptions of equal, favourable and unfavourable autonomy support on educational and well-being outcomes
2019
In this study, we examined whether high-school students experienced optimal educational and well-being outcomes when they perceived that they and their classmates received an equal, rather than unequal, and high amount of autonomy support from teachers. In a prospective study that aimed to predict academic grades and well-being outcomes, surface analyses of polynomial regression equations pointed that perceptions of equal autonomy support were the most optimal in terms of yielding highest levels of need satisfaction, autonomous forms of motivation and happiness with math courses. Additionally, in accordance with tenets of self-determination theory, we demonstrated that effects associated wi…

Finnish Mothers’ and Fathers’ Constructions of and Emotions in Their Daily Lives
2017
This article focuses on parents’ construction of and emotions in their everyday lives. The study brings into focus the meanings in the foreground of everyday life, while also revealing new insights into cultural beliefs and prejudices. Interviews were conducted with five nuclear and four divorced families, and each participant (N = 18) was interviewed twice. The second interview was a photo-narrative interview, for which each participant took photographs pertaining to their daily life. Content and thematic analysis were applied to the data. Three main categories of everyday life emerged from the data: family daily life, couples’ daily life, and one’s own daily life. The importance of and pl…
