Host microbiota constantly control maturation and function of microglia in the CNS.

As the tissue macrophages of the CNS, microglia are critically involved in diseases of the CNS. However, it remains unknown what controls their maturation and activation under homeostatic conditions. We observed substantial contributions of the host microbiota to microglia homeostasis, as germ-free (GF) mice displayed global defects in microglia with altered cell proportions and an immature phenotype, leading to impaired innate immune responses. Temporal eradication of host microbiota severely changed microglia properties. Limited microbiota complexity also resulted in defective microglia. Composition of a Neuromere and Its Segmental Diversification under the Control ofHoxGenes in the Embryonic CNS ofDrosophila

Studies performed at the level of single, identified cells in the fruitfly Drosophila have decisively contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the development and function of the nervous system. This review highlights some of the work based on single-cell analyses in the embryonic/larval CNS that sheds light on the principles underlying formation and organization of an entire segmental unit and its divergence along the anterior/posterior body axis.

Anisotropy of the refractive index and absorption coefficient in the layer plane of gallium telluride single crystals

Refractive index and absorption coefficient of GaTe for light polarized in the optical axis directions in the layer plane are determined from transmission measurements. The refractive index is determined in the wavelength range from 0.7 to 25 μm and the absorption coefficient in the range of energies from 1.6 to 2 eV at room temperature and at 30 K. The optical constants are found to be anisotropic in the layer plane. The refractive index dispersion is interpreted through a Phillips-Van Vechten model and the Penn gaps for each direction are found to be E pg (⊥b) = 3.37 eV and E pg (∥b) = 3.58 eV. Rotation correlation time as a measure of microviscosity of excited state isomerization reactions of three cyanine dyes in n-alcohol solutions

Abstract Rotation correlation times of three chemically similar cyanine dyes of different sizes in n -alcohol solutions have been recorded at several temperatures by using polarized picosecond spectroscopy. For all three dyes the linear temperature dependencies of τ or on η/ T were observed to be independent of solvent up to viscosities of about 60 cP. The rotational motion of the dyes proceeds at much slower rates than the excited state isomerization in viscous solutions of the same fluidity. Translational and rotational molecular motion in supercooled liquids studied by NMR and forced Rayleigh scattering

It has been shown that translational diffusion coefficients, Dt, in the supercooled van der Waals liquids, orthoterphenyl, phenolphthaleindimethylether, and salol, have a weaker temperature dependence than the shear viscosity, η, at T ≲ 1.2Tg and can be described by Dt ∼ η−χ with χ < 1 whereas Dr ∼ η−1 applies for the mean rotational diffusion coefficients, Dr, down to the glass transition temperature, Tg. This apparent decoupling of translational and rotational motion has been discussed in relation with possible anomalous short time diffusion, spatial heterogeneity, and cooperative molecular motions close to Tg.

Designing an innovative system for sea wave utilization

For the sea wave energy exploitation, the department of Energy of Palermo University is investigating a new approach based on the mechanical motion conversion from a linear motion into a unidirectional rotary motion. This mechanical output can be used to run alternators, producing electrical power with a very simplified energy conversion chain. First preliminary tests have been realized in laboratory using a small-scale prototype.

An innovative mechanical motion converter for sea wave applications

The paper shows an innovative system designed and developed by University of Palermo. The device is based on a simple mechanical converter able to transform a variable bidirectional linear motion into a unidirectional rotary motion. This technology can be successful used in sea wave applications, producing a mechanical output usable for the electrical energy production.

Given a smooth compact codimension one submanifold S of Rk and a compact approximation K of S, we prove that it is possible to reconstruct S and to approximate the medial axis of S with topological guarantees using unions of balls centered on K. We consider two notions of noisy-approximation that generalize sampling conditions introduced by Amenta & al. and Dey & al. Our results are based upon critical point theory for distance functions.
