Cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams: A spectroscopic tool for neutron-rich nuclei

An exploratory experiment performed at REX-ISOLDE to investigate cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is presented. The aim of the experiment was to test the potential of cluster-transfer reactions at the Coulomb barrier as a mechanism to explore the structure of exotic neutron-rich nuclei. The reactions Li7(Rb98,αxn) and Li7(Rb98,txn) were studied through particle-γ coincidence measurements, and the results are presented in terms of the observed excitation energies and spins. NOISE EFFECTS IN POLYMER DYNAMICS

The study of the noise induced effects on the dynamics of a chain molecule crossing a potential barrier, in the presence of a metastable state, is presented. A two-dimensional stochastic version of the Rouse model for a flexible polymer has been adopted to mimic the molecular dynamics and to take into account the interactions between adjacent monomers. We obtain a nonmonotonic behavior of the mean first passage time and its standard deviation, of the polymer centre of inertia, with the noise intensity. These findings reveal a noise induced effect on the mean crossing time. The role of the polymer length is also investigated.

Total angular momenta of even-parity autoionizing levels and odd-parity high-lying levels of atomic uranium

Using three-step resonance ionization spectroscopy, over 200 even-parity autoionizing (AI) levels of atomic uranium, including Rydberg series converging to the second lowest ionic level (6L 11/2o), were observed in the 49 930–51 200 cm−1 energy range. Total angular momenta (J values) of these levels were determined by a polarization combination method as well as a method based on the J-momentum selection rule. Using the AI levels of which J values were determined unambiguously, unique J values were also assigned for about 70 high-lying odd-parity levels. The observed J-dependence on autoionization linewidth is interpreted as being due to a centrifugal potential barrier.

Electrical Characterization of CdTe pixel detectors with Al Schottky anode

Abstract Pixelated Schottky Al/p-CdTe/Pt detectors are very attractive devices for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopic imaging, even though they suffer from bias-induced time instability (polarization). In this work, we present the results of the electrical characterization of a (4×4) pixelated Schottky Al/p-CdTe/Pt detector. Current–voltage ( I–V ) characteristics and current transients were investigated at different temperatures. The results show deep levels that play a dominant role in the charge transport mechanism. Investigation of the reaction 64Ni+238U being an option of synthesizing element 120

This study is concerned with the search for entrance channels suitable to synthesize elements with Z > 118. Mass-energy distributions as well as capture cross-sections of fission-like fragments have been measured for the reactions 64Ni + 238U → 302120 and 48Ca + 238U → 286112 at energies near the Coulomb barrier. Compound nucleus fission cross-sections were estimated from the analysis of mass and total kinetic energy distributions. Exploring the stability of super heavy elements: First Measurement of the Fission Barrier of $^{254} $No

2013

The gamma-ray multiplicity and total energy emitted by the heavy nucleus 254No have been measured at 2 different beam energies. From these measurements, the initial distributions of spin I and excitation energy E * of 254No were constructed. The distributions display a saturation in excitation energy, which allows a direct determination of the fission barrier. 254No is the heaviest shell-stabilized nucleus with a measured fission barrier. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014.

Na+ -dependent neutral amino acid transporters A, ASC, and N of the blood-brain barrier: mechanisms for neutral amino acid removal.

Four Na+-dependent transporters of neutral amino acids (NAA) are known to exist in the abluminal membranes (brain side) of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This article describes the kinetic characteristics of systems A, ASC, and N that, together with the recently described Na+-dependent system for large NAA (Na+-LNAA), provide a basis for understanding the functional organization of the BBB. The data demonstrate that system A is voltage dependent (3 positive charges accompany each molecule of substrate). Systems ASC and N are not voltage dependent. Plasma Polymer Membranes for Immobilising Metalloporphyrins

Atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge formation of organosilicon thin films loaded with zinc 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (Zn(TPP)) was investigated for different deposition conditions. UV–visible spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed the effects of the metalloporpyhrins injection parameters and the plasma polymerisation conditions can affect the dispersion of the metalloporphyrins and the morphology of the coatings. The stability of the embedded Zn(TPP) molecules was investigated by orbitrap mass spectrometry.
