Hemangiopericytoma: A cause of recurrent epistaxis

2020

Hemangiopericytoma is a soft tissue tumor with histological variability and unpredictable clinical and biological behavior. this disease is uncommon in the head and neck and the growth pattern is unspecific; thus, diagnosis is often made by exclusion. A 43-year-old woman presented with a story of recurrent epistaxis associated to a growing mass in the paranasal sinus and a paraneoplastic syndrome. the imaging revealed an hypervascular tumor in the right nasal cavity and obliteration of all the ipsilateral sinus cavities. after biopsy the lesion was removed with resolution of epistaxis and paraneoplastic syndrome. There has been no evidence of disease recurrence in 3 years of follow-up. Our …

Chronic otitis caused by heterotopic brain tissue in pterygopalatine fossa

2007

Summary Heterotopic brain tissue is a rare is congenital anomaly, it may present at any age but it is frequently in infancy. This anomaly can occur most frequently in nasal region, although rests elsewhere in the digestive tract, in facial tissue or in lungs have been reported. Heterotopic brain tissue has been defined as a mass composed of mature brain tissue, outside the cranial cavity or spinal canal. We present a 9 years old girl with history of left chronic otitis and nasal obstruction caused by heterotopic brain tissue in pterygopalatine fossa.

Optimal estimation of losses at the ultimate quantum limit with non-Gaussian states

2009

We address the estimation of the loss parameter of a bosonic channel probed by arbitrary signals. Unlike the optimal Gaussian probes, which can attain the ultimate bound on precision asymptotically either for very small or very large losses, we prove that Fock states at any fixed photon number saturate the bound unconditionally for any value of the loss. In the relevant regime of low-energy probes, we demonstrate that superpositions of the first low-lying Fock states yield an absolute improvement over any Gaussian probe. Such few-photon states can be recast quite generally as truncations of de-Gaussified photon-subtracted states.

One- and two-photon lasers with injected signal in a high-Q fabry-Pérot cavity

2000

Explicit models are derived for good cavity one- and two-photon lasers with an injected signal in a Fabry-Perot cavity. The steady solutions and their stability properties are obtained analytically and compared with the corresponding ring cavity model ones. Only quantitative differences between both types of cavities are found. In particular we show that (i) the Fabry-Perot cavity reduces significantly the domain of self-pulsing with respect to the ring cavity, and for the two-photon laser case (ii) larger output can be extracted from a Fabry-Perot cavity than from a ring cavity under certain conditions, something impossible in free-running lasers. We conclude that ring cavity models are se…

The intraoral device of overlaid disk-holding splints as a new in situ oral biofilm model

2014

Objectives: To design a device that allows the formation of in situ oral biofilm with similar characteristics to those from the dental plaque, overcoming the limitations of previous devices. Study Design: The Intraoral Device of Overlaid Disk-holding Splints (IDODS) was designed and manufactured. To test its validity, five healthy adult volunteers wore them for two and four days allowing the biofilm to grow without any type of distortion. After each period, the thickness, vitality and structure of the formed biofilm were measured with a Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) in combination with a dual fluorescence solution. All volunteers filled out a Likert-type questionnaire to evaluat…

Using ultrasound transmission velocity to analyse the mechanical properties of teeth after in vitro, in situ, and in vivo irradiation.

2000

Ultrasound transmission velocity (UTV) in isotropic material as a measure for the modulus of elasticity was correlated to mechanical properties. Changes in micromechanical properties of radiated teeth and influence of the oral cavity were to be evaluated nondestructively. UTV was measured in extracted teeth after 36 Gy and 62 Gy of in situ (enorally, with no contact to the oral cavity) and in vitro irradiation. Relative to controls, teeth subjected to 62 Gy in vivo showed higher UTV values for dentine and enamel. Sound teeth irradiated with 60 Gy in situ also showed higher UTV values for enamel, whereas dentine values were not significantly different from those of control. The mechanical pr…

Septate uterus: nosographic overview and endoscopic treatment

2014

To comment on the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of the septate uterus, with special reference to hysteroscopic metroplasty and its effect on reproductive outcome, we searched publications in PubMed and Embase. Original articles, meta-analysis, reviews, and opinion articles were selected. The studies suggest that the prevalence of the septate uterus is increased in women with repeated pregnancy loss and infertility. Reliable diagnosis depends on accurate assessment of the uterine fundal contour and uterine cavity by means of magnetic resonance and three-dimensional ultrasound. Pertinent published data comparing pregnancy outcome before and after hysteroscopic metroplasty indicated a m…

Selective encapsulation of a chloride anion in a 1H-pyrazole Cu2+ metallocage

2021

A self-assembled metallobox from copper(ii) and two macrocycles containing 1H-pyrazole ligands has been prepared. The internal cavity of the box is able to selectively encapsulate a single chloride anion over any other halide anion.

Cavity-aided quantum parameter estimation in a bosonic double-well Josephson junction

2014

We describe an apparatus designed to make non-demolition measurements on a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a double-well optical cavity. This apparatus contains, as well as the bosonic gas and the trap, an optical cavity. We show how the interaction between the light and the atoms, under appropriate conditions, can allow for a weakly disturbing yet highly precise measurement of the population imbalance between the two wells and its variance. We show that the setting is well suited for the implementation of quantum-limited estimation strategies for the inference of the key parameters defining the evolution of the atomic system and based on measurements performed on the cavity field…
