What limit the research productivity of universities? A case study of a Chinese university
2019
In the era of knowledge economy, university plays an important role in the development of community. Generally, universities are responsible for three missions, i.e. teaching, research and social service. Among them, research lunes at the centre, which provides latest intellectual products for teaching on one hand, and supports social service with advanced practices on the other hand. Critical and influential as it is, after investigation we found that the research productivity of the leading research universities in China is quite stable and thus may not meet the expectation of stakeholders. To address this issue, first we conduct an unstructured interview to conclude the limiting factors …

An Integrated Approach to Mandarin Processing: Food Safety and Nutritional Quality, Consumer Preference, and Nutrient Bioaccessibility
2017
Mandarins are a member of the Citrus genus and are the focus of growing commercial interest, with satsuma mandarins (Citrus unshiu) and the common mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) being the most important mandarin varieties. The possible health benefits and functional properties of those fruits are often associated with the antioxidative function of vitamin C, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds. While most mandarins are consumed fresh, many are processed into juices (mostly cloudy), usually via thermal processing which can lead to the creation of off-flavors and may diminish nutritional quality. The aim of this review is to summarize the most significant and recent information on the sa…
Novel Developments on Artemisinin and Its Derivatives for Cancer Therapy
2009
The lack of effective long-term anticancer therapy highlights the necessity to identify new potent anticancer compounds. Many biocompounds of naturally occurring medicinal plants have pharmacological activities and, thus, represent a source of molecules that may have anti-proliferative effects on a variety of cancers. During the past 10 years, we have systematically analyzed medicinal plants used in traditional Chinese medicine and focused our interest on Artemisia annua (sweet wormwood herb). The active principle of sweet wormwood herb is Artemisinin, a sesquiterpene, which exerts not only anti-malarial activity but also profound cytotoxicity against tumour cells. The anti-tumour mechanism…
Technological development and functional properties of an apple snack rich in flavonoid from mandarin juice
2012
Abstract The development of functional foods has evolved considerably over the years. The technological ability to produce a food with enhanced physiologically active compounds has grown significantly. The aim of this work was to study the incorporation of the beneficial compounds from mandarin low pulp juice into an apple snack using vacuum impregnation technology and to test if the final product exhibited the functional properties and components of both raw materials. Forty grams of the final product made using mandarin juice homogenized at 15 MPa could provide the same quantity of hesperidin as 250 mL of fresh mandarin juice. We also performed a chromatographic determination of the compo…
A new dibenzofuran and other constituents from Ligularia caloxantha, a Chinese medicinal plant.
2008
A new dibenzofuran named 1,2,4-trimethyl-7,8-dimethoxy-dibenzofuran (1), together with seven known compounds, euparin (2), 2,5-diacetyl-6-hydroxy-benzofuran (3), 2-acetyl-5,6-dimethoxy-benzofuran (4), gummosogenin (5), lupeol (6), stigmasterol (7) and (E)-2,5-dihydroxy-cinnamic acid (8), were isolated from the roots of Ligularia caloxantha, a Chinese medicinal plant. The structures of the compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods.
