The Construction of Collective Memory: from Franco to Democracy

Collective memory is neither spontaneous nor random, but the result of a series of selective practices. It establishes group identity and sets power relations between groups. The author considers the process of selection through a case study of the transformation of Franco’s regime in Spain into a democracy. Collective memory of the time is shown to be organized around an event (the Munich Coalition or contubernio) and around the democratic transition. ABSTRACTThe present article focuses on the particular case of the nationalist discourse of Spanish fascism during the Spanish Civil War and the immediate postwar period (1936–1941), in order to explore one specific aspect of it: the characterization of the enemy Republican nation that was to be fought against as unclean and viscous or sticky. The aim here is to analyse what meanings these references possessed and what they can tell us about the general processes of construction of discourses of identity. From 1931 onward, Fascist Italy tried to influence Spanish politics through a combination of formal diplomatic action and clandestine support for monarchist conspirators. Spain did not, however, become an axis of Italy's foreign affairs until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936. Supporting Franco was a way of helping to destroy international Communism and the democratic challenge and also served Mussolini's claims to Italian hegemony in the Mediterranean.
