ISDR mutation pattern and HVR-1 quasispecies were analyzed in HCV genotype 1b-infected patients treated with either PEG- or STD-IFN plus ribavirin, in order to find virological correlates of therapy outcome. ISDR region analysis, performed at baseline (T0) and at 4 weeks of therapy (T1), indicated that ISDR mutation pattern was not predictive of response to treatment. Moreover, no selection of putative resistant strains in the first month of therapy was observed. Viral load was not correlated with any parameter of HVR-1 heterogeneity. The recommended treatment duration with pegylated interferon-α plus ribavirin for patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 is 48 weeks. Interestingly, a subpopulation of genotype 1 patients experience rapid decreases in HCV RNA levels once treatment is initiated and attain rapid virological response, defined as undetectable HCV RNA at week 4 of therapy. Abstract This study presents the results of 90 seismic ambient noise measurements in Palermo, the main city of Sicily (Italy). The dataset has been processed using the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVNSR) technique and interpreted in terms of local geology, which is characterized by the presence of alluvial sediments of two riverbeds masked by urbanization since the seventeenth century. HVNSRs show significant variations in the study area: when the transition stiff to soft is crossed, a typical spectral peak appears in the HVNSRs, mostly in the frequency band 1–2 Hz, and exceeding a factor of 3 in amplitude. Two species of the genus ParaethusJ. A. Lis, 1994 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Cydnidae: Cydninae: Geotomini) are transferred to ProlactistesJ. A. Lis, 2001, resulting in the following new combinations: Prolactistes jani(J. A. Lis, 1995), comb. nov., and Prolactistes lisi(Magnien, 2014), comb. nov. Diagnostic characters for Prolactistes, and a key for its three species are provided. The present note also reports the first Indonesian record for Prolactistes australisJ. A. Lis, 2001 (Ambon Island, Timor) and P. lisi(Ambon Island), both known previously only from Australia.

Giant cane is a natural, eco-friendly and low-cost product that is very common in the Mediterranean area. As far as the Sicilian tradition is concerned, it has been combined with gypsum, a material with the same qualities. Reeds and gypsum have been used as a traditional composite material that is able to join and improve their peculiarities of lightness and insulation, and to utilize the bearing skill of the hardiest reeds and the fire protection and moulding skills of gypsum. Injection of large doses of fructose, sorbitol, or a mixture of glucose, fructose and xylitol in rats causes a drop of liver ATP, total adenine nucleotides and Pi and a rise of AMP, which is in agreement with data from the literature. These changes are considered as a transient disturbance of homeostasis by compounds which are rapidly phosporylated in the liver. This is confirmed by the fact that during continuous infusion of these and other compounds at doses of 1,5 g · kg−1 · h−1 there was no such change.
