How do people’s beliefs on the likely system-level consequences of circulating a certain piece of knowledge influence those people’s knowledge behaviors? To address this question, we leverage the most recent developments of the theory of the commons as learning systems. According to this theory, people are strongly responsive to perceived threats to the commons they (may) benefit from, and strive to learn and respond accordingly. This study analyses epistemic practices in broadcast television interviews, focusing on three different interview genres: celebrity interviews, sports interviews and political interviews. In the analysis I examine the linguistic and interactional practices that are used to construct knowledge in the interviews. These practices include mobilization of different types of knowledge, use of assessments to invite first-hand knowledge, negotiation of epistemic stances while disaligning with the question, and use of assessments for claiming or contesting epistemic rights to authority and expertise. The essay focuses on the damage caused by the loss of the parental relationship and, in particular, its consequences from a compensation point of view. Taking as its starting point a recent ruling of the Corte di Cassazione, the paper highlights how, in the Italian legal system, this type of damage has different, and significant, consequences for the injured party. In the second part of the essay, it will be seen how, in the English legal system, the so called damage for bereavement has only recently been introduced in the Fatal Accident Act 1976 and how its consequences differ considerably from what happens in the Italian legal system.

This study presents the preliminary findings of the first round of implementation of a case study included in the Horizon 2020 project SMOOTH. The project's main objective is to introduce and study the emergent paradigm of the educational commons as an alternative system of values and actions for promoting intercultural and intergenerational dialogue and establishing spaces of democratic citizenship that support the development of local communities.
