Abstract To gain further insight into the role of cortisol in Wsh innate immune responses, we cloned and sequenced a 2592 bp cDNA from sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) peritoneal leukocytes (PCLs) encoding a glucocorticoid receptor (DlGR1). The deduced aminoacid sequence displayed that DlGR1 belong to a multigenic family of steroid hormone receptors, and exhibited high homology (80%) to the Burton’s mouth breeder (Haplochromis burtoni) HbGR1. The DlGR1 functional domains presented homologies with those of several vertebrate species. By means of cobra venom factor (CVF) it is demonstrated that the stimulation of hexosemonophosphate shunt (HMPS) of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) by zymosan (Z) and dextran sulfate (DS) is caused by at least two modes of activation: (a) via activation caused by phagocytosis, (b) via activated alternative pathway of complement activation (APC). Active factors of APC presented with phagocytizable objects strongly enhance activation of PMN. The effect of APC can be observed in serum-containing as well as in serum-free cultures. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Baduanjin qigong on postural control and physical function in older adults with knee osteoarthritis. Methods. The expression of the tachykinin NK3 receptor and its regulation by ovarian steroids were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in uteri from ovariectomized rats. A single transcript corresponding to the 325-bp product expected for the tachykinin NK3 receptor was detected in uteri from olive oil-treated (control) ovariectomized rats. The level of tachykinin NK3 receptor mRNA in progesterone-treated animals was similar to that observed in uteri from control ones. Tachykinin NK3 receptor mRNA levels were significantly smaller in uteri from oestrogen-treated ovariectomized rats, with approximately a 32-fold decrease. Summary There is general agreement between cardiologists, that reperfusion of the infarct related coronary artery (PTCA) is the method of choice for the treatment of an acute myocardial infarction. However, the method utilized for inducing a rapid and complete reperfusion is still discussed. Even if thrombolysis will remain the method of choice for the major part of the population, part of the patient cohort with acute infarction will be treated by direct PTCA. Rapid reperfusion of ischemic myocardium reduces infarct size by limiting infarct extension into the entire area at risk, although a reperfusion damage is induced in the core ischemic area. This paper is a report that concerns two experiments that I proposed in nine secondary school classes (pupils from fourteen to eighteen years old) in order to test some hypotesis concerning the use of metaphor during teaching-learning processes. I begin by analyzing the different significances of the concepts of metaphor and analogy that can be found in literature. Then I try to frame these concepts within the framework of semiotic mediation.
