Autonomous management of Quality of Service and security in an Internet of Things environment
2019
Nowadays, the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming important in our daily lives thanks to technological advances. This paradigm aims to improve the quality of human life through automating several tasks. In this context, service level guarantee within IoT environments is a major challenge while considering a massive deployment of IoT applications and services as well as extending their usage to different domains. The IoT service level can be characterized in two parts: Quality of Service (QoS) and security. Moreover, this service level must be managed in an autonomic manner within the IoT environment given the heterogeneity and the size of its infrastructure making it difficult, even imposs…
The role of trust in enhancing Internet use in a high-risk society
2015
Purpose – This paper aims to determine the key trust antecedents that influence Internet users’ trust level toward Internet service providers (ISPs) in a high-risk society. It also investigates trust-building process, major causes of its violation, their potential implications and restoration. Design/methodology/approach – A mixed-method approach was used in collecting data in Kenya in 2014 by using questionnaire and interview techniques. The former was administered to 250 (with 81 per cent response rate) randomly selected Internet users at Kenyatta University while the latter focused on key decision-makers from four randomly selected ISPs in Nairobi. Findings – The results show that Inter…
Community-driven computational biology with Debian Linux
2011
Background The Open Source movement and its technologies are popular in the bioinformatics community because they provide freely available tools and resources for research. In order to feed the steady demand for updates on software and associated data, a service infrastructure is required for sharing and providing these tools to heterogeneous computing environments. Results The Debian Med initiative provides ready and coherent software packages for medical informatics and bioinformatics. These packages can be used together in Taverna workflows via the UseCase plugin to manage execution on local or remote machines. If such packages are available in cloud computing environments, the underlyin…
An Efficient Hardware Architecture for the HEVC Intra Prediction
2014
International audience; A novel intra prediction hardware architecture forthe High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is presented in thispaper in order to reduce the computation complexity within thisstandard and to accelerate the concerned calculations, and thusto process more and more of video frames at high resolutions. Wepropose a new pipelined structure that we called ProcessingElement (PE) to calculate the angular prediction modes, and werepeat it in three paths that our design composed of. And wepresent, in this paper, a dynamic structure to carry out thePlanar mode. This architecture supports all intra predictionmodes for 8x8 and 4x4 prediction unit sizes. The synthesis resultsshow tha…
PGAC: A Parallel Genetic Algorithm for Data Clustering
2005
Cluster analysis is a valuable tool for exploratory pattern analysis, especially when very little a priori knowledge about the data is available. Distributed systems, based on high speed intranet connections, provide new tools in order to design new and faster clustering algorithms. Here, a parallel genetic algorithm for clustering called PGAC is described. The used strategy of parallelization is the island model paradigm where different populations of chromosomes (called demes) evolve locally to each processor and from time to time some individuals are moved from one deme to another. Experiments have been performed for testing the benefits of the parallelisation paradigm in terms of comput…
Smart Grid Security: A new Approach to Detect Intruders in a Smart Grid Neighborhood Area Network
2016
International audience; In this paper, we propose an efficient and lightweight attack detection mechanism for a smart grid Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) that combine between distributed and centralized intrusion detection. A NAN includes the customers' appliances, smart meters and collectors. The smart meters measure the power consumption of each appliance and the collectors aggregate the measures and forward them to the control center for analysis. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) agents, proposed in our framework, run in a distributed fashion at smart meters level and in a centralized fashion at collector and control center nodes. A combination between a rule-based detection and a learn…
A Trusted Hybrid Learning Approach to Secure Edge Computing
2021
Securing edge computing has drawn much attention due to the vital role of edge computing in Fifth Generation (5G) wireless networks. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been adopted to protect networks against attackers targeting the connected edge devices or the wireless channel. However, the proposed detection mechanisms could generate a high false detection rate, especially against unknown attacks defined as zero-day threats. Thereby, we propose and conceive a new hybrid learning security framework that combines the expertise of security experts and the strength of machine learning to protect the edge computing network from known and unknown attacks, while minimizing the false detection rat…
Predicting lorawan behavior. How machine learning can help
2020
Large scale deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) networks are becoming reality. From a technology perspective, a lot of information related to device parameters, channel states, network and application data are stored in databases and can be used for an extensive analysis to improve the functionality of IoT systems in terms of network performance and user services. LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) is one of the emerging IoT technologies, with a simple protocol based on LoRa modulation. In this work, we discuss how machine learning approaches can be used to improve network performance (and if and how they can help). To this aim, we describe a methodology to process LoRaWAN packets a…
