Instrumentalizing Fukushima: Comparing Media Coverage of Fukushima in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland

According to the theory of instrumental actualization in mediated conflicts, the mass media tend to exaggerate events consistent with the editorial line. This theory was tested using press coverage in Germany, Switzerland, France, and the United Kingdom on the Japanese seaquake, the tsunami it caused, and the nuclear disaster of Fukushima. Within a period of seven weeks after the seaquake, the coverage in the four countries in 27 national newspapers and magazines on the three events was analyzed. Who shapes the news? Analyzing journalists’ and organizational interests as competing influences on biased coverage

This study investigates influences on gatekeeping processes that have the potential to cause biased media coverage. We tested whether and, if so, to what extent journalists’ and organizational interests affect journalistic news processing. In a content analysis, we contrasted the press coverage (n = 1199 articles) of trade disputes of newspaper journalists with the coverage of other trade disputes. Results indicate both coverage and statement bias. In their coverage of newspaper disputes, journalists evaluated employers’ offers significantly more negatively, framed industrial action as legitimate, and criticized employers’ behavior during strikes.
Locally Frozen Defects in Random Sequential Adsorption with Diffusional Relaxation

Random sequential adsorption with diffusional relaxation, of two by two square objects on the two-dimensional square lattice is studied by Monte Carlo computer simulation. Asymptotically for large lattice sizes, diffusional relaxation allows the deposition process to reach full coverage. The coverage approaches the full occupation value, 1, as a power-law with convergence exponent near 1/2. For a periodic lattice of finite (even) size $L$, the final state is a frozen random rectangular grid of domain walls connecting single-site defects. The domain sizes saturate at L**0.8. Modern processors tend to increase the number of registers, being part of them not accessible by the instruction set. Traditionally, the effect of faults in these hidden registers has not been considered during system validation using fault injection. Whereas the recent UN resolution urges governments to accelerate progress towards universal access to affordable and quality health-care services, the Spanish Government, bypassing the parliamentary procedure, enacted a Royal Decree to limit access to free services at the point of delivery for all-undermining the principle of universal coverage. Spanish health and social service budgets have been subjected to large cuts (13,7% in 2012 and 16,2% in 2013) with some regions imposing additional budget cuts.

However, the Italian law never provided for the institutional accreditation of vaccination services.
