Many national and international studies have concentrated on the evaluation and promotion of the inclusive qualities of schools. It is a complex issue which has led to wide debate and a variety of contributions which in turn highlight the need for a tool capable of measuring the inclusive quality of our schools in order to determine the empirical evidence regarding this topic. This article presents the results of an experiment in drafting a questionnaire in order to measure the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by its pupils. The questionnaire is intended as an evaluation and selfevaluation tool that enables the inclusive quality generated by the context to be measured as it is perceived by pupils. At the same time the tool allows reflection processes amongst teachers to be promoted so that they can implement educational activities which contribute to the planning and control of inclusive teaching practices. This contribution puts forward an original tool for measuring the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by pupils attending primary school in several Sicilian towns. It was administered in its definitive version to a sample of 1652 children. The psychometric properties of the tool and the significance it can hold in the areas of planning in research and of educational design are presented in this paper.Settore M-PED/03 - Didattica E Pedagogia Speciale

Asset Market Equilibria in Cryptocurrency Markets: Evidence from a Study of Privacy and Non-Privacy Coins

2019

This paper explores whether asset market equilibria in cryptocurrency markets exist. In doing so, it distinguishes between privacy and non-privacy coins. Most recently, privacy coins have attracted increasing attention in the public debate as non-privacy cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, do not satisfy some users’ demands for anonymity. Analyzing ten cryptocurrencies with the highest market capitalization in each sub-market in the 2016–2018 period, we find that privacy coins and non-privacy coins exhibit two distinct market equilibria. Contributing to the current debate on the market efficiency of cryptocurrency markets, our findings provide evidence of market inefficiency. Moreover, the a…

Another Look at Momentum Crashes

2015

This paper studies the profitability of a selection of prominent momentum-based strategies in the European Monetary Union. In contrast to past examples documenting the lack of profitability of unconditional price momentum in the most recent decade, the current research finds that unconditional price momentum yielded significant positive payoffs. There is evidence of option-like behavior for strategies based on intermediate past performance. Surprisingly, there is no such evidence for the momentum strategy based on recent past performance .

Viscoelastic material models for more accurate polyethylene wear estimation

2018

Wear debris from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene components used for joint replacement prostheses can cause significant clinical complications, and it is essential to be able to predict implant wear accurately in vitro to prevent unsafe implant designs continuing to clinical trials. The established method to predict wear is simulator testing, but the significant equipment costs, experimental time and equipment availability can be prohibitive. It is possible to predict implant wear using finite element methods, though those reported in the literature simplify the material behaviour of polyethylene and typically use linear or elastoplastic material models. Such models cannot represe…

The effects of metal implants on inflammatory and healing processes

2007

Abstract Metal implants are known for their superior mechanical properties. However, cases of implant failure mainly due to aseptic loosening do occur. The formation of particulate wear debris and corrosion products, such as metal ions and reactive oxygen species, are considered to be crucial factors leading to the failure of metal implants. These metal degradation and corrosion products can induce inflammatory responses, mediated among others by neutrophils, macrophages and endothelial cells. Furthermore, these degradation products may affect blood vessel formation, one of the central processes in wound healing after implantation. Such events can lead to the aseptic loosening of implants c…

I traffici illeciti nel Mediterraneo. Persone, stupefacenti, tabacco

2019

Marine debris ingestion in loggerhead sea turtles, Caretta caretta, from the Western Mediterranean

2002

Marine debris represents an important threat for sea turtles, but information on this topic is scarce in some areas, such as the Mediterranean sea. This paper quantifies marine debris ingestion in 54 juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) illegally captured by fishermen in Spanish Mediterranean waters. Curved carapace length was measured, necropsies were performed and debris abundance and type was recorded. Different types of debris appeared in the gastrointestinal tract of 43 turtles (79.6%), being plastics the most frequent (75.9%). Tar, paper, Styrofoam, wood, reed, feathers, hooks, lines, and net fragments were also present. A regression analysis showed that the volume of deb…

Effect of sequential inoculum of beta-glucosidase positive and probiotic strains on brine fermentation to obtain low salt sicilian table olives

2019

In the present study, the β-glucosidase positive strain Lactobacillus plantarum F3. 3 was used as starter during the fermentation of Sicilian table olives (Nocellara Etnea cultivar) at two different salt concentrations (5 and 8%), in order to accelerate the debittering process. The latter was monitored through the increase of hydroxytyrosol compound. In addition, the potential probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei N24 strain was added after 60 days of fermentation. Un-inoculated brine samples at 5 and 8% of salt were used as control. The fermentation was monitored till 120 days through physico-chemical and microbiological analyses. In addition, volatile organic compounds and sensorial analyses …

The Potential of the Yeast Debaryomyces hansenii H525 to Degrade Biogenic Amines in Food

2015

Twenty-six yeasts from different genera were investigated for their ability to metabolize biogenic amines. About half of the yeast strains produced one or more different biogenic amines, but some strains of Debaryomyces hansenii and Yarrowia lipolytica were also able to degrade such compounds. The most effective strain D. hanseniii H525 metabolized a broad spectrum of biogenic amines by growing and resting cells. Degradation of biogenic amines by this yeast isolate could be attributed to a peroxisomal amine oxidase activity. Strain H525 may be useful as a starter culture to reduce biogenic amines in fermented food.
