Regulation of human inducible nitric oxide synthase expression by an upstream open reading frame.

Abstract The human inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene contains an upstream open reading frame (uORF) in its 5′-untranslated region (5′-UTR) implying a translational regulation of iNOS expression. Transfection experiments in human DLD-1 cells revealed that the uORF although translatable seems not to inhibit the translation start at the bona fide ATG. Our data clearly show that human iNOS translation is cap-dependent and that the 5′-UTR of the iNOS mRNA contains no internal ribosome entry site. Translation of the bona fide coding sequence is most likely mediated by a leaky scanning mechanism. The 5′-UTR is encoded by exon 1 and exon 2 of the iNOS gene with the uORF stop codon located…
Temperature concepts for small, isolated systems: 1/t decay and radiative cooling

We report on progress in our investigations of cluster cooling. The analysis of measurements is based on introduction of the microcanonical temperature and a statistical description of the decay of an ensemble with a broad distribution in temperature. The resulting time dependence of the decay rate is a power law close to t �1 , replaced by nearly exponential decay after a characteristic time for quenching by radiative cooling. We focus on results obtained for fullerenes, both anions and cations and recently also neutral C60.

The fundamental concept of phase discussed in this tutorial aimed at providing students with an explanation of the delays and processing parameters they may find in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) pulse programs. We consider the phase of radio-frequency pulses, receiver, and magnetization and how all these parameters are related to phases and offsets of signals in spectra. The impact of the off-resonance effect on the phase of the magnetization is discussed before presenting an overview of how adjustment of the time reference of the free induction decay avoids first-order correction of the phase of spectra. Gene expression is a highly regulated process that adapts RNAs and proteins content to the cellular context. Under steady-state conditions, mRNA homeostasis is robustly maintained by tight controls that act on both nuclear transcription and cytoplasmic mRNA stability. In recent years, it has been revealed that several RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) that perform functions in mRNA decay can move to the nucleus and regulate transcription. The RBPs involved in transcription can also travel to the cytoplasm and regulate mRNA degradation and/or translation. 13C-Decoupled J-Coupling Spectroscopy Using Two-Dimensional Nuclear Magnetic Resonance at Zero-Field

We present a two-dimensional method for obtaining 13C-decoupled, 1H-coupled nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra in zero magnetic field using coherent spin-decoupling. The result is a spectrum determined only by the proton–proton J-coupling network. Detection of NMR signals in zero magnetic field requires at least two different nuclear spin species, but the proton J-spectrum is independent of isotopomer, thus potentially simplifying spectra and thereby improving the analytical capabilities of zero-field NMR. Mass measurements of very high accuracy by time-of-flight ion cyclotron resonance of ions injected into a penning trap

Abstract The possibility of absolute mass measurements using time-of-flight detection of ion cyclotron resonance on ions injected into a Penning trap has been demonstrated. Resolving powers of 2 million have been achieved, with accuracies of about 0.5 ppm. Absolute accuracy is obtained by direct observation of the sum frequency of the cyclotron and the magnetron motions through the use of an azimuthal quadrupole r.f. field to transform initial magnetron motion into cyclotron motion. Imperfections of the Penning trap leading to systematic errors are discussed. Mass-asymmetric fission in the 40ca+142Nd reaction

Shell effects play a major role in fission. Mass-asymmetric fission observed in the spontaneous and low energy fission of actinide nuclei was explained by incorporating the fragment shell properties in liquid drop model. Asymmetric fission has also been observed in the low energy fission of neutron-deficient 180 Hg nuclei in recent β -delayed fission experiments. This low-energy β -delayed fission has been explained in terms of strong shell effects in pre-scission configurations associated with the system after capture. We have performed a search for the decays ${B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}p\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ and ${B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}p\overline{p}$ in a data set of $(88.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ decays collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Four charged $B$ candidates have been observed with an expected background of $0.21\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.14$ events. Low energy properties of color-flavor locked superconductors

We discuss some low energy properties of color-flavor locked (CFL) superconductors. First, we study how an external magnetic field affects their Goldstone physics in the chiral limit, stressing that there is a long-range component of the field that penetrates the superconductor. We note that the most remarkable effect of the applied field is giving a mass to the charged pions and kaons. By estimating this effect, we see that for values $e B \sim 2 f_\pi \Delta$, where $\Delta$ is the quark gap, and $f_\pi$ the pion decay constant, the charged Goldstone bosons become so heavy, that they turn out to be unstable.
