Combined thoracotomy and laminectomy for spinal cavernomas with intrathoracic growth.
2007
Dumbbell shaped epidural cavernomas are uncommon lesions. Of these, the extraforaminal extension is usually limited, and the lesions are removed surgically by an extended laminectomy. We present two cases of dumbbell shaped epidural cavernomas with a considerable intrathoracic growth. They were resected through a combined thoracotomy and laminectomy. Only in the case in which a wide approach to the posterior mediastinum was performed it was possible to completely remove the lesion. Since it is possible to anticipate this histological diagnosis by the magnetic resonance imaging characteristics, we propose that a wide transthoracic approach should be performed associated to a laminectomy if a…
Generalized stability for abstract homotopy theories
2017
We show that a derivator is stable if and only if homotopy finite limits and homotopy finite colimits commute, if and only if homotopy finite limit functors have right adjoints, and if and only if homotopy finite colimit functors have left adjoints. These characterizations generalize to an abstract notion of "stability relative to a class of functors", which includes in particular pointedness, semiadditivity, and ordinary stability. To prove them, we develop the theory of derivators enriched over monoidal left derivators and weighted homotopy limits and colimits therein.
Molecular Chaperones and Thyroid Cancer
2021
Thyroid cancers are the most common of the endocrine system malignancies and progress must be made in the areas of differential diagnosis and treatment to improve patient management. Advances in the understanding of carcinogenic mechanisms have occurred in various fronts, including studies of the chaperone system (CS). Components of the CS are found to be quantitatively increased or decreased, and some correlations have been established between the quantitative changes and tumor type, prognosis, and response to treatment. These correlations provide the basis for identifying distinctive patterns useful in differential diagnosis and for planning experiments aiming at elucidating the role of t…
Evaluation of DR and CR digital mammography systems based on phantom and breast dosimetry.
2006
Digital mammography has been progressively introduced in screening centers, since recent evolution of CR and DR detectors. However, it is questionable which exposure conditions would be more suitable when these techniques are applied, in order to reduce the glandular breast doses, as they are related with induced carcinogenesis. Several exposures have been performed in CR and DR mammography units for comparing absorbed doses during quality control assessments and during screening, diagnosis and treatment. In the first case, the CIRS11A mammographic phantom has been used with standard exposure conditions (28 kV, AEC mode with blackening +0, 50:50 glandularity and 4.5 compressed breast thickn…
Impact de l'âge dans le cancer du sein : du diagnostic à la qualité de vie des patientes
2014
Numerous studies have shown that older women with breast cancer are undertreated in comparison with the youngest. Although several reports suggest strong socio-economic and geographic inequalities in the disease stage at diagnosis and in quality of life in breast cancer patients, the effects of these factors according to age are largely unknown in France. The objectives of this work were to determine the impact of socio-economic and geographic disparities on disease stage in breast cancer patients according to age, to describe treatments and relative survival factors in breast cancer patients according to age, and to identify age-related socioeconomic and clinical determinants of quality of…
Home-based HIV testing: Using different strategies among transgender women in Argentina.
2019
Background In Argentina, HIV prevalence among transgender women (TGW) has been reported at 34%. The stigma is one of the most important factors limiting their access to healthcare services. The aims of this study were to compare different HIV testing methodologies, to determine the factors associated with HIV diagnosis and to determine the feasibility of a home-based HIV testing service for TGW. Methods A multidisciplinary team performed home-based HIV testing interventions in four cities of Argentina. Participants self-identified as TGW, older than 14 years and with a negative or unknown HIV status. Blood samples were screened by two rapid tests (RT), one based on antibodies (Determine™ HI…
Meta-analyses of studies on the association between electromagnetic fields and childhood cancer.
1996
During the last 15 years several studies have investigated a possible relationship between exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) and childhood cancer. There is considerable variation between these studies with respect to methods of exposure assessment and reported results. Methods of exposure assessment range from simple visual criteria to costly and time consuming measurements or estimations of electric flux density. Additional individual refinements further hinder the comparability of results. We carried out several meta-analyses of data published so far taking into account the heterogeneity between studies as far as possible. Our particular interest was to investigate a potential dose…
De novo liquid biopsy and radio genomic diagnostic approach with combined deep learning artificial neural networks for NSCLC
2022
Each year, the mortality rate and incidence of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are dramatically increasing. The introduction of liquid biopsy in the clinical practice of NSCLC has completely revolutionized the approach to such neoplasm since is generally detected through complex and invasive procedures and unfortunately at advanced stages. The importance and innovation of liquid biopsy are linked with the possibility of cancer detection at every stage, adjuvant treatment, resistance genotyping, systematic initiation of treatment, minimal residual disease, early detection of relapse, and screening of NSCLC. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is now emerging as a non-invasive biomarker that wil…
ESGAR consensus statement on liver MR imaging and clinical use of liver-specific contrast agents
2016
Objectives: To develop a consensus and provide updated recommendations on liver MR imaging and the clinical use of liver-specific contrast agents. Methods: The European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) formed a multinational European panel of experts, selected on the basis of a literature review and their leadership in the field of liver MR imaging. A modified Delphi process was adopted to draft a list of statements. Descriptive and Cronbach’s statistics were used to rate levels of agreement and internal reliability of the consensus. Results: Three Delphi rounds were conducted and 76 statements composed on MR technique (n = 17), clinical application of liver-speci…
Left ventricular hypertrophy or storage disease? the incremental value of speckle tracking strain bull's-eye
2017
Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) develops in response to a variety of physical, genetic, and biochemical stimuli and represents the early stage of ventricular remodeling. In patients with LVH, subclinical left ventricular (LV) dysfunction despite normal ejection fraction (EF) may be present before the onset of symptoms, which portends a dismal prognosis. Strain measurement with two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) represents a highly reproducible and accurate alternative to LVEF determination. The present review focuses on current available evidence that supports the incremental value of STE in the diagnostic and prognostic workup of LVH. When assessing the components o…
