Disparities in nutritional adequacy of diets between different socioeconomic groups of Finnish adults

Information on dietary adequacy is needed to assess food and nutrition security in a modern society, especially in the transition towards climate-friendly food systems. In this study, differences in the nutritional adequacy of diets among Finnish adults were evaluated in population groups of different education, income and urbanisation levels. The study used data from the FinDiet 2017 Survey (n = 1655, 18–74 years). Relationship between Thyroid Status during the First Trimester of Pregnancy and Neonatal Well-Being

Iodine is an essential micronutrient for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The proper functioning of the thyroid axis is essential for the normal development of the nervous system, especially in the first trimester of gestation. The aim of the present study was to analyze the perinatal outcomes, anthropometry, and APGAR test scores of newborns and to relate them to maternal thyroid status. The soluble dietary fiber inulin can influence the bioaccessibility of enniatins.

Enniatins (ENs) are bioactive compounds produced by the secondary metabolism of several Fusarium strains and are known to have various biological activities, such as acting as enzyme inhibitors, antifungal antibacterial agents, and immunomodulatory substances. This study investigated the bioaccessibility of the ENs in wheat crispy breads produced with three different inulin concentrations (1, 5 and 10%). The mean bioaccessibility data of the four ENs (A, A(1), B and B(1)) ranged from 68.67% to 84.67 in the experiments carried out without inulin, whereas the data ranged from 51.00 to 74.00% in the experiments carried out with the wheat crispy bread produced with 5 and 10% of the inulin.

Phytochemical profile and antioxidative properties of Plinia trunciflora fruits: A new source of nutraceuticals.

Abstract This study evaluated the polyphenol profile and the antioxidative properties of Plinia trunciflora (O. Berg) Kausel fruits. Folin-Ciocalteau and pH-jumping methods indicated that these berries are a major source of antioxidant polyphenols (1201.05 mg GAE/100 g FW), particularly anthocyanins. HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS analysis identified cyanidine glycosides as the main components. Flavon-3-ols and hydrolysable-tannins were also found. Salmon (Salmo salar) side streams as a bioresource to obtain potential antioxidant peptides after applying pressurized liquid extraction (PLE)

The pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) technique was used to obtain protein extracts with antioxidant capacity from salmon muscle remains, heads, viscera, skin, and tailfins. A protein recovery percentage ≈28% was obtained for all samples except for viscera, which was ≈92%. These values represented an increase of 1.5–4.8-fold compared to stirring extraction (control). Different SDS-PAGE profiles in control and PLE extracts revealed that extraction conditions affected the protein molecular weight distribution of the obtained extracts. Abstract —The effect of the expression of human hepatic lipase (HL) or human apoE on plasma lipoproteins in transgenic rabbits in response to dietary cholesterol was compared with the response of nontransgenic control rabbits. Supplementation of a chow diet with 0.3% cholesterol and 3.0% soybean oil for 10 weeks resulted in markedly increased levels of plasma cholesterol and VLDL and IDL in control rabbits as expected. Expression of either HL or apoE reduced plasma cholesterol response by 75% and 60%, respectively.
