Roton-roton crossover in strongly correlated dipolar Bose-nonstnon condensates
2011
We study the pair correlations and excitations of a dipolar Bose gas layer. The anisotropy of the dipole-dipole interaction allows us to tune the strength of pair correlations from strong to weak perpendicular and weak to strong parallel to the layer by increasing the perpendicular trap frequency. This change is accompanied by a roton-roton crossover in the spectrum of collective excitations, from a roton caused by the head-to-tail attraction of dipoles to a roton caused by the side-by-side repulsion, while there is no roton excitation for intermediate trap frequencies. We discuss the nature of these two kinds of rotons and the relation to instabilities of dipolar Bose gases. In both regime…
Heavy mass expansion, light-by-light scattering through pointlike quanta, and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon
2003
Contributions from light-by-light scattering to ${(g}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{-}2)/2,$ the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, are mediated by the exchange of charged fermions or scalar bosons. Assuming large masses M, pointlike couplings for the virtual particles and employing the technique of large mass expansion, analytical results are obtained for virtual fermions and scalars in the form of a series in ${(m}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}{/M)}^{2}.$ This series is well convergent even for the case ${M=m}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}.$ For pointlike virtual fermions, the expansion confirms published analytical formulas. For virtual scalars, the result can be used to evaluate the contribution from poi…
Exploring Quantum Matter with Ultracold Atoms in Optical Lattices
2005
Publisher Summary This chapter explores quantum matter with ultracold atoms in optical lattices. The chapter focuses on bosonic atoms in optical lattices and on the regime where strong correlations between the atoms become important. In the interaction of atoms with coherent light fields, two fundamental forces arise. The Doppler force is dissipative in nature and can be used to efficiently laser cool a gas of atoms and relies on the radiation pressure together with spontaneous emission. The dipole force creates a purely conservative potential in which the atoms can move. No cooling can be realized with this dipole force, however if the atoms are cold enough initially, they may be trapped i…
Two-LO-Phonon Resonant Raman Scattering in II-VI Semiconductors
1996
Recently, absolute values of socond-order Raman scattering efficiency have been measured around the E 0 and E 0 + Δ 0 critical points of several II-VI semiconductor compounds. The measurements were perfomed in the z(x,x)z backscattering configuration on (001) (ZnSe and ZnTe) and (110) (CdTe) surfaces. They show strong incoming and outgoing resonances around the baud gap and larger scattering efficiencies as compaered to III-V compounds. A theoretical model which includes excitons as intermediate states in the Raman process is shown to give a very good quantitative agreement between theory and experiment. Only a small discrepancy exists, while III-V compounds the discrepancies were close to …
Effects of predator and shelter conditioning on hatchery-reared white seabream Diplodus sargus (L., 1758) released at sea
2012
Abstract The behavioural deficit of hatchery reared (HR) fish used for stock enhancement is the main cause of their low survival in the wild. In this study the effects of predator and shelter conditioning on survival and dispersal of HR white seabream ( Diplodus sargus ) released at sea were investigated. The hypotheses were that conditioned white seabream would avoid predators more efficiently and would be more capable to shelter, showing higher survival and smaller dispersal than naive fish. Six thousand HR white seabream (6.32 ± 0.93 cm total length) were allocated in twelve plastic tanks and divided in four experimental groups: three groups were conditioned with a predator, a refuge or …
Analyses of known and new types of polyhalogenated aromatic substances in oven ash from recycled aluminium production
2003
Abstract Persistent aromatic bromine, chlorine and mixed chlorine-bromine compounds were analysed from recycled aluminium smelter (ALS) ashes to explore the impact of brominated flame retardants (BFR) on their formation. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) were the most abundant original BFRs found. Induction furnace ash contained tetra- to octa-BDEs about 2000 ng g −1 in similar congener ratios as the original scrap, but contents of nona- and deca-BDEs were only 25 and 5 ng g −1 indicating their significant degradation in ALS process. In the most non-polar fraction, PCB levels and profiles were similar as earlier ALS ash samples in 1990s. The highest PCB level measured was that of deca-C…
