Programming languages and dynamic instructional tools: Addressing students’ knowledge base

1992

The chapter presents an instructional computer environment to be used in introductory Pascal programming classes. Traditional programming courses do not foster the kind of knowledge structures that are the trademark of expert programmers. These knowledge structures or programming templates provide programmers with a ready-to-use library of routines from which they draw when writing a new program. Developed as a hypertext tool, TAP (Template Assisted Programming) is an instructional environment to teach programming that emphasizes the development and use of such a library of routines by presenting students with a multiple representation of programming knowledge. In TAP students can (a) switc…

SEAL: A Domain-Specific Language for Novice Wireless Sensor Network Programmers

2013

A lot of the prospective wireless sensor network users are novice programmers. Their experience in general-purpose programming languages is either limited or completely nonexistent. There are both financial and scientific incentives to empower these users and allow them to write sensor network applications on their own, rather than having to rely on a qualified computer science professional. We present SEAL, a sensor network programming language designed for novice programmers. SEAL manages to avoid computer science concepts that are hard to grasp for novices, while remaining suitable for typical sensor network application scenarios. The language is extensible in application-specific way, h…

An identifiable model to assess frequency-domain Granger causality in the presence of significant instantaneous interactions

2010

We present a new approach for the investigation of Granger causality in the frequency domain by means of the partial directed coherence (PDC). The approach is based on the utilization of an extended multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) model, including instantaneous effects in addition to the lagged effects traditionally studied, to fit the observed multiple time series prior to PDC computation. Model identification is performed combining standard MVAR coefficient estimation with a recent technique for instantaneous causal modeling based on independent component analysis. The approach is first validated on simulated MVAR processes showing that, in the presence of instantaneous effects, only t…

The role of NF-AT transcription factors in T cell activation and differentiation11We dedicate this review to Prof. Dr. Rigomar Rieger (Gatersleben), …

2000

AbstractThe family of genuine NF-AT transcription factors consists of four members (NF-AT1 [or NF-ATp], NF-AT2 [or NF-ATc], NF-AT3 and NF-AT4 [or NF-ATx]) which are characterized by a highly conserved DNA binding domain (is designated as Rel similarity domain) and a calcineurin binding domain. The binding of the Ca2+-dependent phosphatase calcineurin to this region controls the nuclear import and exit of NF-ATs. This review deals (1) with the structure of NF-AT proteins, (2) the DNA binding of NF-AT factors and their interaction with AP-1, (3) NF-AT target genes, (4) signalling pathways leading to NF-AT activation: the role of protein kinases and calcineurin, (5) the nuclear entry and exit …

T helper cell polarisation in coeliac disease: any (T-)bet ?

2004

Recent data strongly support the view that coeliac disease is a Th1 mediated inflammatory disease as both interferon γ production and T-bet levels in gut infiltrating cells are upregulated The puzzling observation on high interferon γ (IFN-γ) but low interleukin (IL)-12 levels in coeliac disease (CD) has resulted in questions about the underlying principles of T helper cell polarisation. In this issue of G ut ,1 the molecular basis of T helper cell polarisation in CD has been illuminated by the finding that T-bet, the master transcription factor of T helper cell type 1 (Th1) cells, is upregulated in this disease [see page 1090] . The past decade has witnessed a dramatic improvement in our p…

Development of spontaneous airway changes consistent with human asthma in mice lacking T-bet.

2002

Human asthma is associated with airway infiltration by T helper 2 (TH2) lymphocytes. We observed reduced expression of the TH1 transcription factor, T-bet, in T cells from airways of patients with asthma compared with that in T cells from airways of nonasthmatic patients, suggesting that loss of T-bet might be associated with asthma. Mice with a targeted deletion of the T-bet gene and severe combined immunodeficient mice receiving CD4+cells from T-bet knockout mice spontaneously demonstrated multiple physiological and inflammatory features characteristic of asthma. Thus, T-bet deficiency, in the absence of allergen exposure, induces a murine phenotype reminiscent of both acute and chronic h…

No invasive methodology to produce a probiotic low humid apple snack with potential effect against Helicobacter pylori

2012

Abstract A probiotic low humid apple snack with potential effect against the infection caused by Helicobacter pylori has been developed from apple (cv. Granny Smith) and mandarin juice with a high microbial content of Lactobacillus salivarius spp . salivarius , by vacuum impregnation and hot air drying techniques. The moisture content reached in the final product (0.144 ± 0.012  g water · g sample - 1 ) ensured stability, and although the drying process affected the microbial content, the concentration in the final product (9.486 ± 0.013) × 10 7  CFU  g dry sample - 1 ) was sufficient to confirm that with this procedure it is possible to obtain a stable probiotic fruit with a low moisture c…

Pretaudzēju protekcija ar žurkas TERT apgrieztās transkriptāzes domēnu DNS imunizētās pelēs

2021

Binding properties and stability of the Ras-association domain of Rap1-GTP interacting adapter molecule (RIAM).

2012

The Rap1-GTP interacting adapter protein (RIAM) is an important protein in Rap1-mediated integrin activation. By binding to both Rap1 GTPase and talin, RIAM recruits talin to the cell membrane, thus facilitating talin-dependent integrin activation. In this article, we studied the role of the RIAM Ras-association (RA) and pleckstrin-homology (PH) domains in the interaction with Rap1. We found that the RA domain was sufficient for GTP-dependent interaction with Rap1B, and the addition of the PH domain did not change the binding affinity. We also detected GTP-independent interaction of Rap1B with the N-terminus of RIAM. In addition, we found that the PH domain stabilized the RA domain both in …
