Bilateral Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation of the Prefrontal Cortex Reduces Cocaine Intake: A Pilot Study

2016

Background Chronic cocaine consumption is associated with a decrease in mesolimbic dopamine transmission that maintains drug intake. transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is gaining reliability, a useful therapeutic tool in drug addiction, since it can modulate cortico-limbic activity resulting in reduction of drug craving. Aims In the present study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of bilateral TMS of prefrontal cortex (PFC) in reducing cocaine intake, in a sample of treatment-seeking patients with current cocaine use disorder (DSM-V). Methods Ten cocaine addicts (DSM-V) were randomly assigned to the active or sham stimulation protocol in a double-blind experimental design. Twelve …

The direct effect of magnetic tape ® on pain and lower-extremity blood flow in subjects with low-back pain: A randomized clinical trial

2021

Low-back pain has a high impact on the world population, and solutions are in demand. The behavior of specific physiological processes has been modified using magnetic fields, whether for pain relief, bone consolidation, or improvement of vascularization. The use of tape with magnetic properties could help in these cases. A double-blind randomized clinical trial was designed to use Magnetic Tape® versus placebo Kinesio tape. Blood flow variables were evaluated using pulsed power Doppler ultrasound. Resistance index, pulsatility index, systolic velocity, and diastolic velocity were measured. The pressure pain threshold was measured using algometry in 22 subjects. The results reveal significa…

La partita doppia in Italia e in Spagna nel XVI secolo nelle opere di due autori: Angelo Pietra e Salvador Bartolomé de Solorzano

2009

The purpose of this article is to examine the different application of double-entry book-keeping in Italy and Spain in the sixteenth century. The analysis is based on the comparison between two treatises: the former is Indirizzo degli economi (Mantova, 1586) written by the Benedictine monk Angelo Pietra, while the latter is Libro de caxa y manual de cuentas de mercaderes (Madrid, 1590) written by Salvador Bartolomé de Solorzano. These two admirable treatises realized in the end of sixteenth century can be considered as significant expressions of the state of the art of accounting culture in the two countries in this historical period. The comparative analysis has highlighted important evide…

Quantitative Topography of the Hemodynamic-Oxidative Metabolic Interrelation by Multispot Measurement Approach in Rat Ischemia Models

2001

We applied the multispot measurement approach for both laser Doppler (LD) and a microspectrophotometric method to measure local cerebral blood flow (1CBF) and local tissue hemoglobin oxygenation (IHbO2). We demonstrated that the current technology permits in vivo observation, allowing us to establish a close topographical relation between CBF and HbO2. We measured 1CBF by LD flowmetry and tissue HbO2 by a microspectrophotometric method at multiple corresponding locations using a “scanning” technique that employs a computer-controlled micromanipulator. CBF and HbO2 data from predefined locations were correlated to the topographical situation and then arranged in a three-dimensional (3D) imag…

Monitoring of cortical blood flow: Clinical relevance of experimental laser Doppler studies

1996

Continuous monitoring of cortical blood flow provides real time information of CBF-changes during neurosurgical operations and on the neurointensive care unit. Laser Doppler flowmetry is a continuous, noninvasive technique suitable for measurement of the cortical microcirculation. In a number of experimental studies we have analyzed the characteristics of this method for cortical blood flow monitoring. The high spatial resolution of laser Doppler flowmetry and the heterogeneity of the cortical microvascular network results in a scatter of flow values over a wide range depending on the site of measurement. Data collection from different spots and calculation of frequency histogram may serve …

Therapeutic monitoring of new antipsychotic drugs.

2004

Typical antipsychotic drugs qualify for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) primarily for the following reasons: control of compliance and avoidance of extrapyramidal side effects by keeping chronic exposure to minimal effective blood levels. For the atypical antipsychotic clozapine, drug safety is another reason to use TDM. With regard to the new antipsychotics risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, amisulpride, ziprasidone, and aripiprazole, which have been introduced in the clinic during the last few years, the rationale to use TDM is a matter of debate. Positron emission tomography (PET), which enables measurement of the occupancy of dopamine D2 receptors, revealed that receptor occupancy c…
