Fracture Processes Observed with A Cryogenic Detector

2006

In the early stages of running of the CRESST dark matter search using sapphire detectors at very low temperature, an unexpectedly high rate of signal pulses appeared. Their origin was finally traced to fracture events in the sapphire due to the very tight clamping of the detectors. During extensive runs the energy and time of each event was recorded, providing large data sets for such phenomena. We believe this is the first time the energy release in fracture has been directly and accurately measured on a microscopic event-by-event basis. The energy threshold corresponds to the breaking of only a few hundred covalent bonds, a sensitivity some orders of magnitude greater than that of previou…

Feasibility and physics potential of detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos at JUNO

2021

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) features a 20 kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent location for 8B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, high energy resolution compared with water Cherenkov detectors, and much larger target mass compared with previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper, we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting 8B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. A reduced 2 MeV threshold for the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable, assuming that the intrinsic radioactive …

Comparison of different methods for evaluating the transmission function of a two-stage cylindrical mirror analizer in XPS applications

2007

Three different evaluations of the energy dependence of the transmission-detection function of a two-stage cylindrical electron analyzer have been obtained by resorting to three established procedures. Their relative merits have been tested as follows. First they have been used to correct raw XPS spectra of clean Cu, Ag and Au surfaces. Next, the secondary electron background has been subtracted using Tougaard's method. Finally, the primary electron spectra so obtained have been reanalyzed by peak area measurement in the frame of the modern formalism for quantitative XPS analysis. Ideally a constant residual value should thus be obtained. The variability of these residuals with peak energy …

Search for Electronic Recoil Event Rate Modulation with 4 Years of XENON100 Data

2017

We report on a search for electronic recoil event rate modulation signatures in the XENON100 data accumulated over a period of 4 years, from January 2010 to January 2014. A profile likelihood method, which incorporates the stability of the XENON100 detector and the known electronic recoil background model, is used to quantify the significance of periodicity in the time distribution of events. There is a weak modulation signature at a period of $431^{+16}_{-14}$ days in the low energy region of $(2.0-5.8)$ keV in the single scatter event sample, with a global significance of $1.9\,\sigma$, however no other more significant modulation is observed. The expected annual modulation of a dark matt…

Search for second generation scalar leptoquarks in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

2012

The results of a search for the production of second generation scalar leptoquarks are presented for final states consisting of either two muons and at least two jets or a muon plus missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. A total of 1.03 fb−1 integrated luminosity of proton-proton collision data produced by the Large Hadron Collider at \(\sqrt{s}=7~\mbox{TeV}\) and recorded by the ATLAS detector is used for the search. The event yields in the signal regions are found to be consistent with the Standard Model background expectations. The production of second generation leptoquarks is excluded for a leptoquark mass mLQ<594 (685) GeV at 95 % confidence level, for a branching ratio of…

Cutoff dependence of the thrust peak position in the dipole shower

2020

We analyse the dependence of the peak position of the thrust distribution on the cutoff value in the Nagy-Soper dipole shower. We compare the outcome of the parton shower simulations to a relation of the dependence from an analytic computation, derived within soft-collinear effective theory. We show that the result of the parton shower simulations and the analytic computation are in good agreement.

Search for top and bottom squarks from gluino pair production in final states with missing transverse energy and at least three b-jets with the ATLAS…

2012

This letter reports the results of a search for top and bottom squarks from gluino pair production in 4.7 fb[superscript −1] of pp collisions at s√=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search is performed in events with large missing transverse momentum and at least three jets identified as originating from a b-quark. Exclusion limits are presented for a variety of gluino-mediated models with gluino masses up to 1 TeV excluded.

Search for decays of stopped, long-lived particles from 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

2012

New metastable massive particles with electric and colour charge are features of many theories beyond the Standard Model. A search is performed for long-lived gluino-based R-hadrons with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31 pb[superscript −1]. We search for evidence of particles that have come to rest in the ATLAS detector and decay at some later time during the periods in the LHC bunch structure without proton–proton collisions. No significant deviations from the expected backgrounds are observed, and a cross-section limit is set. It can be interpreted as excluding gluino-based R-hadrons with masses less than 341 GeV at the 95 % …

Measurement of the inclusive isolated photon production cross section in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

2019

The production cross section of inclusive isolated photons has been measured by the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in pp collisions at a centre-of-momentum energy of √s = 7 TeV. The measurement is performed with the electromagnetic calorimeter EMCal and the central tracking detectors, covering a range of |η| < 0.27  in pseudorapidity and a transverse momentum range of 10 < pγT < 60 GeV/c . The result extends the pT coverage of previously published results of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the same collision energy to smaller pT. The measurement is compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and to the results from the ATLAS and CMS experiments. All measurements and t…

JUNO sensitivity to low energy atmospheric neutrino spectra

2021

Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then pro…
