Process parameters of microsphere preparation based on propylene carbonate emulsion-precursors.

2020

This study aimed for a detailed understanding of the impact of different process parameters involved during celecoxib-loaded microsphere preparation based on propylene carbonate emulsion-precursors.Microspheres were prepared by a modified emulsification-solvent extraction method. Performed investigations included polymer solubility and viscosity, microsphere size, morphology and stability, propylene carbonate content as well as celecoxib solid state, content and release.Rough-walled round microspheres with sizes between 21 µm and 122 µm and an internal sponge-like structure filled with residual propylene carbonate (content between 1.9 ± 0.1% and 6.7 ± 0.5% w/w) were obtained. Encapsulation …

Influence of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) on PVA-Poly-N-hydroxyethyl-aspartamide (PVA-PHEA) Microcrystalline Solid Dispersion Films

2020

AbstractThis study was conducted to formulate buccal films consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly-N-hydroxyethyl-aspartamide (PHEA), to improve the dissolution of the drug through the oral mucosa. Ibuprofen sodium salt was used as a model drug, and the buccal film was expected to enhance its dissolution rate. Two different concentrations of PVA (5% w/v and 7.5% w/v) were used. Solvent casting was used to prepare films, where a solution consisting of drug and polymer was cast and allowed to dry. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the pr…

Novel silver-based nanoclay as an antimicrobial in polylactic acid food packaging coatings.

2010

This paper presents a comprehensive performance study of polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposites, obtained by solvent casting, containing a novel silver-based antimicrobial layered silicate additive for use in active food packaging applications. The silver-based nanoclay showed strong antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative Salmonella spp. Despite the fact that no exfoliation of the silver-based nanoclay in PLA was observed, as suggested by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments, the additive dispersed nicely throughout the PLA matrix to a nanoscale, yielding nanobiocomposites. The films were highly transparent with enhanced water barrier …

Phase coexistence in a triolein-phosphatidylcholine system. Implications for lysosomal membrane properties.

2010

The effects of tri- and monoglycerides on phospholipid (POPC) membranes were studied using spectroscopical methods. Triolein was found to form two types of POPC-rich membranes, both with POPC or as a three-component system with monopalmitin. These two membrane types were determined as co-existing phases based on their spontaneous and stable separation and named heavy and light phase according to their sedimentation behaviour. Marked differences were seen in the physical properties of these phases, even though only minor compositional variation was detected. The light, less polar phase was found to be less ordered and more fluid and seemed to allow significantly lower amount of water penetra…

Aliphatic polycarbonates based on carbon dioxide, furfuryl glycidyl ether, and glycidyl methyl ether: reversible functionalization and cross-linking.

2014

Well-defined poly((furfuryl glycidyl ether)-co-(glycidyl methyl ether) carbonate) (P((FGE-co-GME)C)) copolymers with varying furfuryl glycidyl ether (FGE) content in the range of 26% to 100% are prepared directly from CO2 and the respective epoxides in a solvent-free synthesis. All materials are characterized by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), (1)H NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The furfuryl-functional samples exhibit monomodal molecular weight distributions with Mw/Mn in the range of 1.16 to 1.43 and molecular weights (Mn) between 2300 and 4300 g mol(-1). Thermal properties reflect the amorphous structure of the polymers. Both post-functionalization and…

Design and construction of highly stable, protease-resistant chimeric avidins.

2005

The chicken avidin gene family consists of avidin and seven separate avidin-related genes (AVRs) 1-7. Avidin protein is a widely used biochemical tool, whereas the other family members have only recently been produced as recombinant proteins and characterized. In our previous study, AVR4 was found to be the most stable biotin binding protein thus far characterized (T(m) = 106.4 degrees C). In this study, we studied further the biotin-binding properties of AVR4. A decrease in the energy barrier between the biotin-bound and unbound state of AVR4 was observed when compared with that of avidin. The high resolution structure of AVR4 facilitated comparison of the structural details of avidin and …

Morphology of hybrid polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) micelles: Analytical ultracentrifugation and SANS studies

2006

Abstract Morphology and structure of aqueous block copolymer solutions based on polystyrene- block -poly(ethylene oxide) (PS- b -PEO) of two different compositions, a cationic surfactant, cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC), and either platinic acid (H 2 PtCl 6 ⋅6H 2 O) or Pt nanoparticles were studied using a combination of analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). These studies combining methods contributing supplemental and analogous structural information allowed us to comprehensively characterize the complex hybrid systems and to discover an isotope effect when H 2 O was replaced with D 2 O. In particular, TEM s…

Electrical Bistability around Room Temperature in an Unprecedented One-Dimensional Coordination Magnetic Polymer

2013

The synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties of an unprecedented one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymer containing [Fe2(S2C6H2Cl2)4](2-) entities bridged by dicationic [K2(μ-H2O)2(THF)4](2+) units are described. The magnetic properties show that the title compound presents pairwise Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic interactions that can be well reproduced with a S = 1/2 dimer model with an exchange coupling, J = -23 cm(-1). The electrical conductivity measurements show that the title compound is a semiconductor with an activation energy of about 290 meV and two different transitions, both with large hysteresis of about 60 and 30 K at 260-320 K and 350-380 K, respectively. These two tr…

Crystallization, spectral, crystallographical, and thermoanalytical studies of succinobucol polymorphism.

2011

Four different polymorphs, A, C, D, and E, of succinobucol were isolated and characterized by means of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, and attenuated total reflection–infrared spectroscopy. From a number of experiments, the same polymorphs (C, D, and E) and an equilibrium phase mixture B consisting of polymorphs C and D were repeatedly gained using different solvents or their mixtures. Although polymorph A was obtained directly from recrystallization only on few occasions, polymorphs C, D, and E proved to be metastable kinetic polymorphs, which slowly transform to a thermod…

Structural studies of five novel bile acid-4-aminopyridine conjugates

2012

Abstract Synthesis and solid-state structural characterization of five bile acid amides of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) are reported. Systematic crystallization experiments revealed a number of structural modifications and/or solvate/hydrate systems for these conjugates. Particularly, cholic acid conjugate exhibited five distinct structure modifications, including one anhydrous form, mono- and dihydrates, as well as ethanol and 2-butanol solvates. The obtained crystal forms were examined extensively with various analytical methods, including solid-state NMR, Raman, and IR spectroscopies, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. …
