Study of the retention and release of n-hexanal incorporated into soy protein isolate–lipid composite films
2010
[EN] This work deals with the study of the kinetic of aroma release, which had been previously incorporated into soy protein isolate (SPI)-lipid composite films. The aim was to determine the influence of type and amount of lipidic material on aroma (n-hexanal) release and retention, as well as the apparent diffusion coefficients. To carry out this study it have been employed SPI-based films containing two SPI:LIPID ratios (1:0.25 and 1:0.5), and two types of lipids, oleic acid (OA) and beeswax (BW), in OA:BW ratios 100:0, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70 and 0:100. The measurements were performed by a gas chromatography technique. The films that showed more retention were SPI:LIPID 1:0.5 100% BW and con…
Digital innovations in rural micro-enterprises
2020
Digitalization gives micro-enterprises and rural areas new possibilities and it can support their competitiveness. In this paper, we have presented one way of supporting the diffusion and adoption of digital innovations in rural micro-enterprises. First, we examined the challenges and digital competence of the micro-enterprises in the rural areas of Central Finland to better understand what they needed. The second step was to develop a workshop concept. Theories of innovation diffusion and adoption were used as a base for these workshops. The last step was to evaluate the developed concept, its effects and challenges. We found that the workshop concept worked well for spreading information,…
Production technologies in stochastic continuous time models
2011
Abstract Properties of dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models can be revealed by either using numerical solutions or qualitative analysis. Very precise and intuition-building results are obtained by working with models which provide closed-form solutions. Closed-form solutions are known for a large class of models some of which, however, have some undesirable features such as potentially negative output. This paper offers closed-form solutions for models which are just as tractable but do not suffer from these shortcomings.
Technological and knowledge diffusion link: An international perspective 1870–2019
2021
Abstract Technology diffusion is a necessary but not sufficient condition for knowledge diffusion. Technological waves' impact on education differs across educational levels. We use data for 104 countries on technology diffusion and education from 1870 to 2019. We find six technology waves from 1870 to 2019 had a substantial and statistically significant educational attainment impact using fixed panel data modeling. The impact differs across time and regions, with the most noticeable impact in Advanced economies and Eastern Europe. Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East, and North Africa are catching up with lagging Sub-Saharan Africa. The transportation revoluti…

Tip-induced mobilization upon cooling of Ni monolayers on Re(0001)
2021
Usually, cooling a metal sample down to cryogenic temperatures leads to immobilization of the surface atoms. In this study, we demonstrate a movement of Ni adatoms at $4.6\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ on Ni films grown on a Re(0001) single crystal, while the surface is rigid at room temperature. The mobility is observed from 2 to 20 atomic-layer-thick films. Measurements at intermediate temperatures reveal an increasing mobility with decreasing temperature. The observed velocity of advancing steps is consistent with a model considering a sudden release of material, eventually triggered by the tip, followed by free diffusion. According to the model, an increasing length scale for t…
Anomalous tracer diffusion in film forming colloidal dispersions
2000
Film forming colloidal dispersions can be conceived as a material composed of interpenetrating hydrophobic (polymer) and hydrophilic (partially broken interfaces) phases where the transport properties of one phase are influenced by the geometric confinement effect imposed by the other. We studied the transport properties of film forming colloidal dispersions by introducing hydrophobic dye molecules into the colloidal particles and determining their motion with forced Rayleigh Scattering as a function of length scale (grating distance A) and water content. At water contents between 18 and 3 weight percent we find signatures of anomalous tracer diffusion, namely stretched exponential decay cu…
Some diffusion equations with finite propagation speed
2007
We summarize some of our recent results on diffusion equations with finite speed of propagation. These equations have been introduced to correct the infinite speed of propagation predicted by the classical linear diffusion theory. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
O2Transport in Skeletal Muscle: Development of Concepts and Current State
1994
When comparing oxygen consumption rates(V O2) of various organs — as shown in Fig. 1 —skeletal muscle is exceptional in two respects: Its consumption rate attains the second largest absolute value of all organs and may vary between rest (0.2 mlO 2.100g-1’• min -1 ) and maximum performance (16 m1O 2.100g-1 • min -1 for electrical stimulation) by a factor of 80, thus covering a range that is by far larger than in any other tissue. In order to understand muscle O 2 transport one has to identify transport mechanisms and evaluate their importance towards bringing about the observed high O 2 fluxes and allowing for their enormous variability.
Stability analysis for stochastic hybrid systems: A survey
2014
This survey addresses stability analysis for stochastic hybrid systems (SHS), which are dynamical systems that combine continuous change and instantaneous change and that also include random effects. We re-emphasize the common features found in most of the models that have appeared in the literature, which include stochastic switched systems, Markov jump systems, impulsive stochastic systems, switching diffusions, stochastic impulsive systems driven by renewal processes, diffusions driven by Lévy processes, piecewise-deterministic Markov processes, general stochastic hybrid systems, and stochastic hybrid inclusions. Then we review many of the stability concepts that have been studied, inclu…
