Analysis and review of the perioperative management of COVID-19 patients in thoracic surgery.

2021

Many daily activities, such as tying one’s shoe laces, opening a jar of jam or performing a free throw in basketball, require the skillful coordinated use of both hands. Even though the non-invasive method of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been repeatedly shown to improve unimanual motor performance, little is known about its effects on bimanual motor performance. More knowledge about how tDCS may improve bimanual behavior would be relevant to motor recovery, e.g. in persons with bilateral impairment of hand function. We therefore examined the impact of high-definition anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-atDCS) on the performance of a bimanual sequential s…

Effectiveness of tDCS at Improving Recognition and Reducing False Memories in Older Adults

2021

Background: False memories tend to increase in healthy and pathological aging, and their reduction could be useful in improving cognitive functioning. The objective of this study was to use an active–placebo method to verify whether the application of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) improved true recognition and reduced false memories in healthy older people. Method: Participants were 29 healthy older adults (65–78 years old) that were assigned to either an active or a placebo group

Coexpression of vasoactive intestinal peptide, calcitonin gene-related peptide and substance P immunoreactivity in parasympathetic neurons of the rhe…

1995

Abstract By the use of light microscopic immunohistochemistry, the present study investigates whether substance P (SP) and calcitonin generelated peptide (CGRP), which are well documented neurotransmitter candidates in primary sensory fibers, are also expressed in parasympathetic neurons of the rhesus monkey lung. A combination of double fluorescence immunohistochemistry and staining of adjacent sections revealed triple coexistence of SP, CGRP and the cholinergic co-transmitter vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in a large number of neuronal cell bodies in intrinsic peribronchial ganglia. In addition, there was co-localization of SP and CGRP in choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-positive neu…

Constipation severity is associated with productivity losses and healthcare utilization in patients with chronic constipation

2014

OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the association between constipation severity, productivity losses and healthcare utilization in a national sample of Italian patients with chronic non-organic constipation (CC). METHODS: We enrolled 878 outpatients with CC. Clinical and demographic data were collected by physicians during clinical examinations. Patients completed a self-administered questionnaire (Patient Assessment of Constipation-Symptoms, PAC-SYM; Work Productivity and Activity Impairment; healthcare utilization, and Symptoms Checklist 90 Revised - Somatization Scale, SCL-90 R). RESULTS: Mean PAC-SYM score was 1.62 ± 0.69. Mean weekly sick time due to constipation was 2.7 ± 8.6 h and pro…

Effectiveness of tDCS to Improve Recognition and Reduce False Memories in Older Adults

2020

Background. False memories tend to increase in healthy and pathological aging, and their reduction could be useful in improving cognitive functioning. The objective was to use an active-placebo method to verify whether the application of tDCS in improving true recognition and reducing false memories in healthy older people. Method. Participants were 29 healthy older adults (65-78 years old) assigned to active or placebo group; active group received anodal stimulation at 2mA for 20 min over F7. An experimental task was used to estimate true and false recognition. The procedure took place in two sessions on two consecutive days. Results. A mixed ANOVA of true recognition showed a significant …

[Effect of flecainide on longitudinal and transverse conduction velocities in ventricular myocardium. An experimental study].

2007

It is known that the effect of flecainide on longitudinal and transverse ventricular conduction velocities depends on the coupling interval. If this is so, whether the longitudinal or transverse direction is predominantly affected could depend on the magnitude of the coupling interval. In order to investigate this hypothesis, we studied the effect of flecainide, 1 micromol/L, on conduction velocities in excised heart preparations from 11 rabbits using a basal cycle length of 250 ms and inserting two extrastimuli at a decreasing coupling interval. Flecainide significantly reduced both conduction velocities. However, the effect increased as the coupling interval decreased for only the longitu…

Microbial technologies for the discovery of novel bioactive metabolites

2002

Soil microbes represent an important source of biologically active compounds. These molecules present original and unexpected structure and are selective inhibitors of their molecular targets. At Biosearch Italia, discovery of new bioactive molecules is mostly carried out through the exploitation of a proprietary strain collection of over 50000 strains, mostly unusual genera of actinomycetes and uncommon filamentous fungi. A critical element in a drug discovery based on microbial extracts is the isolation of unexploited groups of microorganisms that are at the same time good producers of secondary metabolites. Molecular genetics can assist in these efforts. We will review the development an…

Ipsilesional and contralesional regions participate in the improvement of poststroke aphasia: a transcranial direct current stimulation study

2015

In the past few years, noninvasive cerebral stimulations have been used to modulate language task performance in healthy and aphasic patients. In this study, a dual transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on anterior and posterior language areas was applied for 2 weeks to a patient with a possible crossed aphasia following a right hemisphere stroke. Inhibitory cathodal stimulation of the right Brodmann areas (BA) 44/45 and simultaneous anodal stimulation of the left BA 44/45 improved the patient’s performance in picture naming. Conversely, the same bilateral montage on BA 39/40 did not produce any significant improvement; finally, electrode polarity inversion over BA 39/40 yielded a fu…
