2021
The essay analyses the reasons why the governments created by Chiaromonte family in the cities of eastern Sicily failed, and investigates the cause of their success in the long lasting urban signorie of western Sicily. To create consensus, they had to ensure the supply of grain for the population, to defend the territory from external attacks, and to maintain public order. In addition to military prowess, they used their speaking skills to influence citizens and showed a magnificent lifestyle by building imposing palaces, celebrating sumptuous weddings and funerals, and commissioning works of art. They created spy networks and used violent methods to repress dissent (imprisonment, torture, …

2013
Street art is any art – specifically visual art – developed in public spaces. It can include traditional graffiti artwork, stencil, sculpture, sticker art, street poster art, video projection, guerrilla art, flash mobbing, wheatpasting, etc. Typically, the term is used to refer to unsanctioned or “prohibited” art, as opposed to institutional artistic initiatives. So, is it possible to speak about street art as a form of protest art? If so, what are the signs, texts, codes and practices through which graffiti, stencils and other forms of street art can serve as means to express opposition and dissent? The present paper aims at answering these questions at first through a general historic int…
Exploring organizational dissent in a global setting
2018
The current research project focuses on a distinctive form of employee voice: organizational dissent. Dissent is the key to correcting organizational misconduct, facilitating group innovation and enhancing both employee satisfaction and organizational performance. Although organizational dissent has garnered substantial scholarly attention over the last two decades, most of these studies were developed in and for the domestic US environment; little is known about how dissent is conceptualized, expressed and received in a different cultural setting. This dissertation aims to complement previous research by investigating the relationship between organizational dissent and workplace freedom of…
Accuracy, Coherence, and Discrepancy in Self and Other Reports: Moving Toward an Interactive Perspective of Organizational Dissent.
2013
The purpose of this study was twofold and involved examining the viability of using the Organizational Dissent Scale as an other-report instrument, and developing additional perceptual data related to dissent expression. A sample of 291 people completed survey questionnaire measures of organizational dissent. Equal-sized groups ( n = 97) completed either a self-report, a workplace colleague other-report, or an organizational outsider other-report. Results indicated the Organizational Dissent Scale performed reliably as an other-report, but it showed some tendency for social desirability. In addition, findings suggested that certain indicators of proximity to the dissenter reduced discrepan…
