AbstractThe purpose of this article is to provide the reader with a comprehensive yet detailed account of the current giftedness and gifted education situation in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. It is concerned with four main research questions: (1) How is ‘giftedness’ defined in German-speaking countries? (2) How are gifted children identified? (3) What gifted education programs are there? (4) What are the empirical findings on these programs?The article is based on relevant journal articles, books, and webpages. The review of each of the topics mentioned above is accompanied by some critical comments.

Digital competence in teacher education: comparing national policies in Norway, Ireland and Spain

This paper explores the development of policies dealing with teachers' digital competence in Norway, Ireland and Spain. Using a documentary research approach, the study analysed relevant policy documents from each country over a thirty-year period to the present day. Analysis of the documents highlights historical differences and similarities in how technology in education policies developed during that period and differences in how teacher education was addressed. Abstract The pervasive use of mobile phones among adolescents has led researchers to evaluate the role of parental characteristics in connection with their children's problematic smartphone use (PSU). The present study involved mother/father/adolescent triads and aimed to test a model examining the role of both parents' and adolescents' emotion dysregulation (ED) in predicting children's PSU. Santiago Ramón y Cajal made his mark in the history of science as a brilliant researcher of the histology of the nervous system. His bold efforts and the international recognition he received during his lifetime played an important role in the consolidation of the Spanish Neurohistological School which is composed of a large number of eminent disciples. This chapter proposes a model of positive and negative learning (PNL model). We use the term negative learning when stress among students occurs, and when knowledge and abilities are not properly developed. We use the term positive learning if motivation is high and active learning occurs. The PNL model proposes that (a) learning-related demands and resources contribute to learning engagement and burnout, (b) that learning engagement improves critical thinking, which (c) should enhance students’ abilities to detect fake news. Fostering aspects of pre-service teachers’ data literacy: Results of a randomized controlled trial

Abstract The present study reports the results of a randomized controlled trial aimed at fostering specific aspects of pre-service teachers’ data literacy. The 6-h intervention focused on data types, reference norms, scale transformations, graphic displays of the properties of frequency distributions, and judgments about the magnitude of mean differences. Pretest-posttest comparisons of a data literacy test showed a large and significant effect of the intervention. Furthermore, main effects but no significant interaction effects with pretest scores were found for personal and motivational covariates (academic self-concept, value beliefs, study interest) on posttest data literacy.
