Una storia italiana: Giorgio e Isabella

2018

This paper focuses on the story of two dark-skinned Italians written for Giorgio Marincola by Carlo Costa and Lorenzo Teodonio in Razza partigiana and for his sister Isabella by Wu Ming 2 and Antar Mohamed in Timira. Romanzo meticcio. The events of their lives as well as many other aspects of our colonial neocolonial and postcolonial history have re-emerged from the darkness in which they had been hidden only in the last fifteen years thanks to the reopening of the archives allowing to re-discuss many of the aspects that in the pages of History as well as in those of literature had been told in another way. The two works that could be inserted into the current defined as the "new Italian epic" dismantle a series of clichés and prejudices and invite us to reflect on the concept of Italian identity on colonialism and its consequence in the short and long term and particularly on racism.Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature Comparate

Probabilistic semantics for categorical syllogisms of Figure II

2018

A coherence-based probability semantics for categorical syllogisms of Figure I, which have transitive structures, has been proposed recently (Gilio, Pfeifer, & Sanfilippo [15]). We extend this work by studying Figure II under coherence. Camestres is an example of a Figure II syllogism: from Every P is M and No S is M infer No S is P. We interpret these sentences by suitable conditional probability assessments. Since the probabilistic inference of \(\bar{P}|S\) from the premise set \(\{M|P,\bar{M}|S\}\) is not informative, we add \(p(S|(S \vee P))>0\) as a probabilistic constraint (i.e., an “existential import assumption”) to obtain probabilistic informativeness. We show how to propagate the…

Modeling multiple taxis: Tumor invasion with phenotypic heterogeneity, haptotaxis, and unilateral interspecies repellence

2021

We provide a short review of existing models with multiple taxis performed by (at least) one species and consider a new mathematical model for tumor invasion featuring two mutually exclusive cell phenotypes (migrating and proliferating). The migrating cells perform nonlinear diffusion and two types of taxis in response to non-diffusing cues: away from proliferating cells and up the gradient of surrounding tissue. Transitions between the two cell subpopulations are influenced by subcellular (receptor binding) dynamics, thus conferring the setting a multiscale character. We prove global existence of weak solutions to a simplified model version and perform numerical simulations for the full se…

On the pattern recognition and classification of stochastically episodic events

2012

Published version of a chapter published in the book: Transactions on Compuational Collective Intelligence VI. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-29356-6_1 Researchers in the field of Pattern Recognition (PR) have traditionally presumed the availability of a representative set of data drawn from the classes of interest, say ω 1 and ω 2 in a 2-class problem. These samples are typically utilized in the development of the system’s discriminant function. It is, however, widely recognized that there exists a particularly challenging class of PR problems for which a representative set is not available for the second class, which has motivated a great deal of…

Organizational and Individual Values: Their Main and Combined Effects on Work Attitudes and Perceptions

1999

A survey was conducted using a convenient sample of employees (N = 999) from various industries to examine the main and combined effects of organizational and individual values on organizational commitment, perceived organizational support, and procedural justice. Moderated multiple regression analyses showed that employees' reactions were mainly explained by perceived organizational values and value preferences. In contrast, person-organization value fit and interaction effects were marginal. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Perceived Value in Sporting Events (PVSP): A Further Step for the Strategic Management

2020

The perception of sporting events spectators is a crucial area of research in the sport management field. These studies analyze different variables, the perceived value of which has gained relevance in recent years. By providing superior value to consumers, organizations can achieve a competitive advantage and guarantee their sustainability. However, a limitation found in the literature is that most of the scales used to measure it are one-dimensional or with single items, and do not provide enough information. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Value (PVSE) for the evaluation of sporting events. The questionnaire was…

Integrated Bayesian Approaches Shed Light on the Dissemination Routes of the Eurasian Grapevine Germplasm

2021

The domestication and spreading of grapevine as well as the gene flow history had been described in many studies. We used a high-quality 7k SNP dataset of 1,038 Eurasian grape varieties with unique profiles to assess the population genetic diversity, structure, and relatedness, and to infer the most likely migration events. Comparisons of putative scenarios of gene flow throughout Europe from Caucasus helped to fit the more reliable migration routes around the Mediterranean Basin. Approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) approach made possible to provide a response to several questions so far remaining unsolved. Firstly, the assessment of genetic diversity and population structure within a we…

When the nose must remain responsive: glutathione conjugation of the mammary pheromone in the newborn rabbit

2014

In insects, xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes were demonstrated to regulate pheromones inactivation, clearing them from the olfactory periphery and keeping receptors ready for stimulation renewal. Here, we investigate whether similar processes could occur in mammals, focusing on the pheromonal communication between female rabbits and their newborns. Lactating rabbits emit in their milk a volatile aldehyde, 2-methylbut-2-enal, that elicits searching-grasping in neonates; called the mammary pheromone (MP), it is critical for pups which are constrained to find nipples within the 5 min of daily nursing. For newborns, it is thus essential to remain sensitive to this odorant during the whole nursin…

The relationship between precipitation depth and weather circulation patterns over Sicily

2019

Some weather circulation patterns (WPs) derived by the UK Met Office and defining a certain type of atmospheric circulation over Europe have been recently used to analyze the relationship of the regional UK precipitation and drought with respect to the atmospheric circulation over Europe (Richardson et al. 2018). In this study, we attempt to find out one or more relationships between precipitation depth and weather patterns over a non UK-centred domain, such as Sicily (Italy), which is characterized by a totally different climate as compared to the climate of UK. Since the island has been affected by many floods in the last years, occurred as a consequence of extreme rainfall events, it wou…

Types de configurations pluviométriques sur le bassin méditerranéen, forçages atmosphériques et évènements intenses (1979-2013).

2015

Sixrecurrent and redundant daily rainfall patterns have been extracted over the Mediterranean area from 1979 to 2013: five areassociated to regionals rainfall excess (South-West Mediterranean, Mid-North Mediterranean, East Mediterranean, WestMediterranean and north-west Mediterranean) and one to generalized deficit. Each rainfall pattern is associated with atypical barometric spatial configuration leading to local wind bringing moisture to the coast leading to specific local rainfallsurplus. Rainfall patterns also explain a large part of the spatial characteristics and the probability of occurrence of intenseevents. For example, more than 20% of days of “West-Mediterranean” rainfall pattern…
