Blood eosinophils and treatment response in hospitalized exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A case-control study

2015

Background: In outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), blood eosinophilia is considered as a biomarker of response to systemic corticosteroid therapy. However, little is known on whether blood eosinophilia is also predictive of positive clinical outcome in severe acute exacerbations of COPD requiring hospitalization. We hypothesized that blood eosinophil-positive severe acute exacerbations of COPD differ from eosinophil-negative ones in terms of response to therapy and clinical outcomes. Methods: To test our experimental hypothesis, we retrospectively analyzed medical records of patients with COPD admitted to our ward because of severe exacerbation, over a two-year pe…

Sex estimation by tooth dimension in a contemporary Spanish population.

2020

Aim: Sex determination is a fundamental step in the biologic profile reconstruction of unknown individuals. Teeth are frequently recovered intact, even in case of natural or mass disasters, fires, crashes or accidents. Therefore, they are very valuable in sex determination in a forensic and anthropological context. The objective of this study is to identify a method for sex determination using the mesio-distal widths of permanent teeth, in a contemporary Spanish sample. Method: The mesio-distal dimensions of permanent teeth were obtained from study casts derived from patients seeking treatment at the orthodontic clinic of the Universidad Europea de Valencia. A total of 210 patients were inc…

Do randomized clinical trial selection criteria reflect levels of risk as observed in a general population of acute myocardial infarction survivors? …

2016

IF 4.638; International audience; Background: Few clinical trials have focused on populations with a history of distant myocardial infarction (MI). The PEGASUS trial assessed the impact of dual antiplatelet therapy in such patients, selected by enrichment criteria of high cardiovascular risk. Whether the PEGASUS population reflects the risk of a broader post-MI population is questionable. We analyzed whether 4-year mortality of a routine-practice population would differ according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria used in PEGASUS.Methods: FAST-MI is a nationwide French registry recruiting acute MI patients in November 2005; 2490 patients alive and without recurrent MI at one year were …

Impact of chronic total occlusion artery on 12-month mortality in patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction treated by percutaneou…

2013

Abstract Background Three-vessel coronary artery disease is associated with high mortality in patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The purpose of this study was to assess the impact on 12‐month mortality of chronic total occlusion (CTO) in the non-infarct-related artery (non-IRA), as assessed by coronary angiography during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for NSTEMI, of patients with 3-vessel disease. Methods The study included all of the NSTEMI patients with 3-vessel disease by coronary angiogram who were treated by PCI and who were registered in the prospective Polish Registry of Acute Coronary Syndromes (PL-ACS) from July 2007 to November 2009. T…

Riesgo de pobreza infantil y exclusión social en dos regiones españolas: determinantes sociales y familiares

2021

Unusual Magnetic State in Lithium-DopedMoS2Nanotubes

2003

We report on the very peculiar magnetic properties of an ensemble of very weakly coupled lithium-doped MoS2 nanotubes. The magnetic susceptibility chi of the system is nearly 3 orders of magnitude greater than in typical Pauli metals, yet there is no evidence for any instability which would alleviate this highly frustrated state. Instead, the material exhibits peculiar paramagnetic stability down to very low temperatures, with no evidence of a quantum critical point as T-->0 in spite of clear evidence for strongly correlated electron behavior. The exceptionally weak intertube interactions appear to lead to a realization of a near-ideal one-dimensional state in which fluctuations prevent the…

Relevant factors for the eco-design of polylactide/sisal biocomposites to control biodegradation in soil in an end-of-life scenario

2017

[EN] The eco-design considers the factors to prepare biocomposites under an end-of-life scenario. PLA/sisal biocomposites were obtained from amorphous polylactide and sisal loadings of 10, 20 and 30 wt% with and without coupling agent, and subjected to biodegradation in soil according to standard IS0846. Mass loss, differential scanning calorimetry and size-exclusion chromatography were used for monitoring biodegradation. A statistical factorial analysis based on the molar mass M-n, and crystallinity degree X-c pointed out the relevance and interaction of amount of fibre and use of coupling agent with the time of burial in soil., During the preparation of biocomposites, chain scission provo…

Invisalign treatment from the patient perspective: A Twitter content analyses

2021

Background: Understanding patient perspective is a key factor in improving treatment satisfaction. The aim of the present study is to qualitatively describe the content of Twitter posts related to the treatment with Invisalign in order to get a better understanding of patient experience. Material and Methods: Tweets were prospectively collected during a period of four weeks from public available posts on Twitter using Awario™ a bespoke social media monitoring tool. After applying the pertinent inclusion and exclusion criteria the selected posts were analysed by three investigators using thematic analysis. Specific themes and subthemes were developed. Results: A total of 1564 tweets were ana…

Hacia la transformación de la escuela. Valoración de un programa de convivencia a partir de la voz del alumnado y del profesorado

2016

<p class="AbstractText">Learning to coexist continues to be one of the challenges faced by the current educational system, especially for those schools located in contexts at risk of social exclusion where the violence rate increases on a daily basis. The main aim sought by the present study consists in assessing the impact of a program developed at an educational center located in a vulnerable neighborhood of the city of Valencia (Spain). It is a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest research with a control group that involved a total of 109 teachers and students. It deserves to be highlighted that this paper forms part of a broader research initiative, for which reason the results ob…
