Computational identification of chemical compounds with potential anti-Chagas activity using a classification tree

Chagas disease is endemic to 21 Latin American countries and is a great public health problem in that region. Current chemotherapy remains unsatisfactory; consequently the need to search for new drugs persists. Here we present a new approach to identify novel compounds with potential anti-chagasic action. A large dataset of 584 compounds, obtained from the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, was selected to develop the computational model. Accuracy, Reliability, and Safety of Luminol in Bloodstain Investigation

ABSTRACTThe reliability of luminol as a presumptive test reagent was studied in this work. The possibility of obtaining a false negative subsequent to contamination of the test specimen was determined. The behavior of luminol with respect to a contaminant was compared to other reagents used in similar tests. Following an analysis of the test results, other test sensitivity, and safety data, it was concluded that luminol is a more reliable reagent than others due to a higher improbability of producing false positives and false negatives, apart from being safer than other substances. It should, therefore, be considered as a “preferable” or “first choice” reagent for use in presumptive tests.

Background. Late survival and freedom from retreatment on the descending aorta was evaluated after ascending aortic repair for type A acute aortic dissection (TAAAD). Methods. Between March 1992 and January 2006, 189 TAAAD patients (mean age, 52 11; range, 17 to 83 years) were included; of these, 58 had a patent false lumen, and 49 had Marfan syndrome. The descending aorta was evaluated postoperatively with computed tomography (CT). In this paper we analyse the operation of a fully digital Phase Lock Loop (PLL) in a false lock regime, using real data. The issue has been noticed while we were testing performance of our software receiver in a moving user scenario. While the phenomenon of false lock has been described in other papers about PLLs, our intent is to describe a practical, and in our opinion interesting, issue we encountered and how we got over it.

We sought to determine if dysregulation of the lipidome may contribute to metabolic risk factors. A 75-year-old man was referred to our unit complaining of a large pulsatile neck mass that appeared 2 days after an accidental fall and hyperextension of the neck. One month earlier, he was submitted to left carotid artery stenting for symptomatic high-grade stenosis. His medical history included diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, and a right femoropopliteal bypass for critical limb ischemia. At the time of admission, he was afebrile and had no evidence of local erythema, draining sinus, or leukocytosis. Moreover, C-reactive protein was 1 mg/dL.
