Branch ligatures and blood aspiration for post-traumatic superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm: surgical technique

2014

The aim of this study is to report a new minimally invasive technique of superficial temporal artery (STA) pseudoaneurysm treatment. Several surgical options have been employed to treat STA pseudoaneurysms. To address this rare condition, the employed techniques are ligation and excision of the aneurysm, endovascular coil embolization or percutaneous ultrasound-guided thrombin injection. Between techniques no significant differences are reported in terms of outcomes. The decision to adopt a technique depends on STA pseudoaneurysm morphology and surgeon preference. In the present report, STA pseudoaneurysm afferent and efferent branches were identified by ultrasound in a 92-year-old female. …

Detection and Recognition of Target Signals in Radar Clutter via Adaptive CFAR Tests

2006

In this paper, adaptive CFAR tests are described which allow one to classify radar clutter into one of several major categories, including bird, weather, and target classes. These tests do not require the arbitrary selection of priors as in the Bayesian classifier. The decision rule of the recognition techniques is in the form of associating the p-dimensional vector of observations on the object with one of the m specific classes. When there is the possibility that the object does not belong to any of the m classes, then this object is to be classified as belonging to one of the m classes or to class m+1 whose distribution is unspecified. The tests are invariant to intensity changes in the …

Truth, Negation and Meaning

2013

‘True’ and ‘False’ are defined through a linguistic rule requiring the negation operator. This is the elaboration of an idea proffered for the first time by the Stoics on the basis of some remarks by Aristotle and then in modern times by Frege and Wittgenstein. Another thesis of this essay is the following: the true/false rule is a sort of UR-Regel underlying all linguistic practices (including prayers and commands) and all human cultures. Reinterpreting the notion of Spielraum put forward by Wittgenstein in 4.463 of the Tractatus, I will present an implicational pragmatic theory of a true proposition. Jokes and reductio ad absurdum are explained as examples of Spielraum.

Deep learning algorithms for gravitational waves core-collapse supernova detection

2021

The detection of gravitational waves from core-collapse supernova (CCSN) explosions is a challenging task, yet to be achieved, in which it is key the connection between multiple messengers, including neutrinos and electromagnetic signals. In this work, we present a method for detecting these kind of signals based on machine learning techniques. We tested its robustness by injecting signals in the real noise data taken by the Advanced LIGO-Virgo network during the second observation run, O2. We trained three newly developed convolutional neural networks using time-frequency images corresponding to injections of simulated phenomenological signals, which mimic the waveforms obtained in 3D nume…

Marginal hazard ratio estimates in joint frailty models for heart failure trials

2019

Abstract This work is motivated by clinical trials in chronic heart failure disease, where treatment has effects both on morbidity (assessed as recurrent non‐fatal hospitalisations) and on mortality (assessed as cardiovascular death, CV death). Recently, a joint frailty proportional hazards model has been proposed for these kind of efficacy outcomes to account for a potential association between the risk rates for hospital admissions and CV death. However, more often clinical trial results are presented by treatment effect estimates that have been derived from marginal proportional hazards models, that is, a Cox model for mortality and an Andersen–Gill model for recurrent hospitalisations. …

A comparison of semiparametric approaches to evaluate composite endpoints in heart failure trials

2021

In heart failure trials efficacy is usually proven by a composite endpoint including cardiovascular death (CVD) and recurrent heart failure hospitalisations (HFH), evaluated with time-to-first-event analysis based on a Cox model. As a considerable fraction of events is ignored that way, recurrent event[for full text, please go to the a.m. URL]

PIECEWISE ANOMALY DETECTION USING MINIMAL LEARNING MACHINE FOR HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGES

2021

Abstract. Hyperspectral imaging, with its applications, offers promising tools for remote sensing and Earth observation. Recent development has increased the quality of the sensors. At the same time, the prices of the sensors are lowering. Anomaly detection is one of the popular remote sensing applications, which benefits from real-time solutions. A real-time solution has its limitations, for example, due to a large amount of hyperspectral data, platform’s (drones or a cube satellite) constraints on payload and processing capability. Other examples are the limitations of available energy and the complexity of the machine learning models. When anomalies are detected in real-time from the hyp…

Study time effects in recognition memory.

2004

We empirically tested the assumption that study time increases recognition accuracy because the storage of information is better when study time is longer as Shiffrin and colleagues have reported, an assumption common to parallel models of recognition. In the present study with 123 subjects, we examined the effect of item strength on four measures: hit rate, false alarm rate, d′, and β, for a single-word recognition task with longer study times than those usually used in the literature. Analysis indicated significant increase for hit rate and d′ and a decrease in false alarm rate, as one goes from weak to stronger study conditions, and a change in ln(β) when study time is greater than 1 se…

La gestión en educación física. Dos modelos de gestión, el mismo individuo

2020

In the development of this writing, we intend to critically analyze the idea of management in Physical Education and problematize it with the issues of inclusion and inequality. To do this, first there is a brief etymological review of the concept of management, and then we analyze how Physical Education links management to economic and business Sciences. The analysis material used are books, manuals and articles on Physical Education management. From the analysis of this material, the second point of the work arises to explain two management models in Physical Education that we call: individual management and self-management. These models are presented as different and opposite, but in the…
